After talking to Anise, Jackie felt that she needed another raktajino. Dealing with Romulans never meant anything good.
“mm..briefing..?
She tapped at the intercom activating the ship-wide PA system.
“Attention all crew. This is your Captain speaking. Welcome aboard the USS Horizon. As much as I’d like to keep it festive, we’ve already received our first orders. All department heads; briefing in one hour.? She spoke. “Clawson out?
She cut the connection, musing if she came out a little too strong there. Shaking the feeling off Jackie sipped at her raktajino, as she turned her attention over to going over the mission details once more.
‘okay hold it… mission? What about meeting your crew first? Departments and the like?’ she asked herself. ‘Harmon said this wasn’t like running your own department or two’
Jackie set her mug down and looked out the viewer for a moment.
‘This wasn’t like running your own department’ Harmon’s voice almost rang in her mind, reminding her just how similar yet how different being a CO was.
Before getting to business she’d have to welcome the crewmembers properly. She’d have to get to know them as well throughout their stay aboard the Horizon.
Jackie pulled up the ship’s roster in order to acquaint herself with her department heads before meeting them.
“Flight Ops – Ensign Clara Jaro; Bajoran. Chief Engineer – Lt. j.g. James Dorval; Human. Chief Security/Tactical – Lt Adam Kao; Human. Marine CO – 1st Lt Thomas Cruiser; Human……?
Jackie read through the entire crew roster, and went over the department heads’ service records whilst keeping an eye on the time.
She looked up at the chronometer, ten more minutes to go. She tapped at her console absently, clearing the screen before she stood up and replaced her now empty raktajino mug back in the replicator to be recycled.
Picking up her PADD she exited her ready room and stepped onto the bridge. The feline gave the bridge a once over, looking at the people there before she moved in the direction of the briefing room, ready to meet her crew and get on their way.

“Computer, what time is it??
“The time is thirteen hundred fifty nine hours?
“Well then hurry up!?
“The turbolift travels at the maximum safe speed?
“Of course it does?
Beep. Swish.
Practically sprinting, Dorval got to door the briefing room in a few seconds. He paused out side and took a moment to slow his breathing. He checked his PADDs and entered the room. The time displayed 14:00:21. Not too bad.
He moved quickly and quietly to an empty seat and looked around the room. No one was there.
“Computer, what time did Commander Clawson make her last address to the crew??
“Lieutenant Commander Clawson made her announcement at thirteen hundred and ten hours.?
“Riiiiight.?
Jamie let out a large sigh and wandered over to the replicator. It was nice to be on time for once, it’ll make a good impression. He shook his head at himself, punched up some tea and waited.

ON:
Adam had turned the corner off the airlock from Detroit. HE looked back momentarily, reminiscing the times he’d had. Martin had wanted Adam on the Detroit since he took command eight months ago. He knew what Adam could do after teaching Security Tactics to the young man during his academy tour. Before that, Adam had served under Rico aboard the Detroit, essentially making it his home from home, and now, for logistical purposes, he was being forced out of that home.
The steely grey walls of Starbase 17 were not a very pretty sight. Mind you, they were designed to be practical, not pretty. It was pretty empty right now, however at full capacity, Starbase 17 could hold quite a few ships for numerous reasons. Re-supply, re-crew, repair; The main three. Adam scraped his hand round the smooth surface of the walls as he moved round to the Horizons docked area. A new ship, new crew and new adventures awaited him.
== Horizon Airlock, 10 minutes later ==
Checking his orders, the yeoman nodded to Adam and smiled. Not much older than about twenty five years, her flowing blond hair, thin shaped body… Now that was a woman to die for. He smiled back, hoping she was not the only one aboard. Snapping back to reality he moved off. If this was the twentieth century, he’d have her telephone number and a date set. But it wasn’t. It was 2381 and well, things were different. He looked back at the yeoman and sighed a little, bumping into a crewman as he turned his head back.
“Im so sorry, crewman. I was distracted.? Adam smiled and looked back once again, kneeling down to help the crewman pick up the PADDs he was carrying.
“Yes, sir. I can see that.? The crewman pushed his glasses back up his nose and also knelt down to retrieve the stray PADDs.
“I uh, uh… I don’t know what you mean, crewman. It wasn’t the yeoman over there at all.? Adam sounded unsure of himself and the crewman knew it. He just smiled and got up as Adam placed the last PADDs on the stack he was carrying. “Sir,? The crewman said as he began to move off, “She’s married.? He smiled and carried on down the airlock. He reached the yeoman and gave her a small kiss on the cheek.
Adam couldn’t believe it! The crewman was married to the yeoman. Adam sighed, already knowing he couldn’t have everything in the world, he just moved off into the Horizon again.

"Ive only just got here." Adam began to jog through the bows of the ship and around corner he didnt know Intrepid classes had. After a few minutes, he decided to call it quits. He was lost.
"Computer, where are my quarters?"
"Lt. Adam Kao, quarters are located on deck two."
"Lovely!"

“Master Chie-? the voice cut off as Jefferson swung around with a scowl on his face “I apologise Mister Jefferson? said the Ensign emphasising the Mister. “Your personal effects have been transferred to the Horizon? he handed Jeffery a PADD “Here are some details I was told to deliver, information on the lounge and your quarters.?
“Thank you? said Jefferson gruffly “I’d appreciate it if everyone would stop calling me Master Chief, I’m no longer part of Starfleet? his scowl deepened as if to provide further proof of Jefferson’s ire.
The ensign was shaken by the civilian’s reaction; he’d never met such an angry person before in his left. At least not one who was happy dressing down Starfleet officers in such a direct manner. Jefferson turned away from the Ensign indicating the conversation was over, the ensign winced as he realised he had a further message to convey.
“Mister Jefferson, the Captain requests you embark now rather than later. I believe the Horizon has a mission already?
“Damn it!? said Jefferson slamming his drink down on to the table before him “Can’t a man have a single drink in peace without some member of Starfleet telling him what to do.?
“Erm I’m sorry sir? stammered the Ensign “I didn’t mean to erm anger you?
Jeffery looked up, the look on the messengers face cut through his anger for a few moments. He smiled his scowl dropping from his face “I apologise, I didn’t mean to shoot the messenger. Let the Captain know I’ll be aboard forthwith.?
Jefferson watched the Ensign turn and leave “Bloody Starfleet? he muttered under his breath as he finished his whisky.
<<Jefferson’s Quarters – USS Horizon>>
Jeffery began unpacking his case, pulling from it several new suits he’d recently had tailored. Before today he had little reason to wear anything other than his uniform, now he had the chance to be more casual. A voice broke out over the comm. breaking Jefferson from his thoughts.
“Attention all crew. This is your Captain speaking. Welcome aboard the USS Horizon. As much as I’d like to keep it festive, we’ve already received our first orders. All department heads; briefing in one hour.? She spoke. “Clawson out?
He turned and looked for his uniform, momentarily wondering what he would have to do before the briefing. It took a few moments to dawn upon him that he wasn’t part of the crew; briefings weren’t for him to attend. For the first time since he joined Starfleet Jeffery felt at a loss, he was no longer needed.
Feeling more than a little dejected Jeffery closed his case, and turned to leave his quarters. Perhaps some time working in the lounge would alleviate some of the feelings flowing through his mind.

Anise couldn’t help it, the helm wasn’t manned at the moment, so the Trill took the opportunity to continue her study of the control panel before he briefing.
She lost touch with reality, until a gently placed furred paw on her shoulder brought Anise back.
She looked up slightly embarrassed.
Jackie smiled softly.
“Miss it, don’t you?? she asked.
Anise flushed a shade of reddish. The Trill fumbled for words for a while before leaving the station and facing the feline.
“Don’t you?? she asked.
Jackie let out a little nod.
“I was a fighter wing CO/Security tactical, didn’t really get to fly star ships that much? she said.
"Oh right, forgot" Anise replied, a bit embarrased as her slip up.
“So uh.. orders…we ready to get this mission on the way? “ she asked changing the subject.
Jackie held up a PADD.
“More or less.? She said. “We’ve got orders to depart as soon as possible.? Jackie stated, handing Anise a PADD “It’s all in here?
Anise nodded, taking the PADD and reading through it as Jackie glanced around the bridge. She didn’t really have that much time to just look around the bridge when she was up here last with Admiral Burton. This was probably the only quiet moment she’d get to actually take a look around the bridge of her ship, considering the upcoming mission.
Jackie looked around, she’s yet to even take a seat in the captain’s chair, and as eager as she was to get underway, she was yet to brief her crew before they went ahead with their mission.
“Sounds like fun? Anise noted dryly. “Can’t wait to get this under way? she said.
Jackie nodded.
“C’mon, briefing time? Jackie said moving towards the briefing room.
Several moments later, Jackie was inside the briefing room greeting the crew already there as they waited for the rest of the crew to arrive before the briefing started.

Dorval stood at attention as soon as the doors opened.
*This is it Jamie, this is your new Captain!* He tried not to let his nerves show as the Felinoid entered.
He looked with his eyes but held his posture and noted the Trill first officer he'd already meet. He hoped he wouldn't be standing attention to often in this post, it really didn't suit him.
Jackie looked around, as Anise took in the occupants of the room and made mental notes on who was earlier and who’d be on time. She noted that she’s met the engineer before, she was curious about some of the other crew members.
Anise noticed the flight officer sitting aside, going over a data padd in silence, she slipped off to greet the Ensign as Jackie got acquainted with the crew members in the room.
The feline’s eyes settled on the engineer, she took a few steps towards him as she spoke.
“At ease…?she paused briefly recalling the crew rostser she’s gone over “Mr Dorval? she murmured, a reassuring smile on her lips, trying to keep her tone easy going, so as not to come off to harsh herself and to make him feel less tense.
Dorval relaxed his posture, but stayed formal.
"Yes ma'am, James Allyn Dorval. Jamie off duty if you'd like. It's nice to finally meet you."
Jackie nodded.
“Jackie Clawson.? She briefly introduced herself, trying not to look too formal “Nice to finally meet the man who’ll be looking after my ship’s engines? she noted.
"Yes ma'am, They'll be better then tip top, if I have anything to say about it." He blurted out, then trying to cover for his eagerness, "The engineering crew I've meet so far seem up too it."
Jackie smiled, trying not to seem too intimidating. She noticed he was being a little too eager, much like some of her new fighter wing pilots have been when she met them for the first time.
“I expect nothing less of tip top, from my engineering staff.? She noted. “Engineering is after all the heart of the ship? she stated.
Jamie smiled. *Of course engineering was the heart of the ship, it was also the legs, and lungs!* But he didn't point that out. He turned his attention to the table and spoke.
Jackie nodded, smiling a little. Thus far she liked the ship herself.
"I'm looking forward to this posting, ma'am, if I may say so. This ship is not only top of the line but also front of the line. That being said, I'm very curious as to our first mission..."
Jamie trailed off, not quite sure if he'd said too much.
“You’ll get to know our orders as soon as the briefing starts.? She noted. “Let’s just say we’re in for some…interesting times? the feline said, trying not to remind herself on who they were up against just yet. “hopefully we’re all be on our toes? she said
No sense getting annoyed with it now, she had to force herself to keep her personal feelings aside. She was no longer a crew member on Harmon’s ship, this time things were different.
Jamie looked to Lt. Selmak. Anise was now going over something on her PADD.
"Ma'am, I have my shift rotations ready for you." He reached over too pile of PADDs and pulled out one. "I hope I-" as he pulled the PADD, his tea cup came with it and fell to the floor with a smash. Dorval closed his eyes and shook his head.
Anise stared momentarily at the scene, as she reached for the PADD. The Trill wondered what the COs response would be.
Jackie let out a small sigh, slightly rolling her eyes.
“I do hope you’re more careful with the engines than you are with the cups? she remarked, cracking a smile as she started picking up the broken pieces.
Dorval kneeled down quickly and started picking up pieces of cup. "Of course ma'am. I... I'm sorry. I was distracted. The engines will be... much safer then the cups."
Dorval was glad he was kneeling as he could feel himself start to blush. Counted him self lucky that most of the senior staff wasn't here, although the captain was the one whose opinion mattered most.
“Don’t overdo it, Mr Dorval? Jackie noted as she picked up some pieces. “If you are trying to impress me, this isn’t the way to go about it?
Jamie let out a sigh and stood up. He spoke slowly. "I'm sorry ma'am, I'm a little nervous. This is my first senior staff meeting. It's just... I'm sorry. Let me assure you, I do have engineering under control, and normally, my tea cups as well." Jamie took the pieces of glass over the replicator and took sometime to breath before returning to the table.
Jackie took the pieces over to the replicator ,then brushed off her paws before continuing the conversation.
“It’s okay to be a little nervous.? She said, her tone levelled and soft. “you’re a person not a machine.? She noted. “I realise that the change does make one nervous and prone to slip ups.? She said, remembering her own slip ups with Burton a few hours ago.
“I’m sure you’re more than capable to do your job as chief engineer aboard the Horizon? she said, smiling softly.
Jamie felt a wave of relief, and felt his shoulders relax. He turned toward his captain and smiled. "Thank you ma'am. Uh... do you prefer ma'am or captain... or sir?"
“Whichever, I’m’ not really picky.? Jackie noted with a wave of her hand. “It’s a formality? she said “I won’t reprimand you if you use one and not the other? she noted lightly.
Jamie walked back over to the table and waited for the Captain and First Officer to sit. He watched the first officer’s face to see if she had reacted to his conversation with the captain as he pulled out her chair.
Anise shook her head a little, smiling knowingly. The Selmak symbiont within her gave off a knowledgeable sign of de ja vu. Malek had done something like that when he met one of his captain’s a long time ago. Anise covered up the smile, and buried her face in the PADD in front of her.
Jackie looked around the briefing room, looking at each of her senior staff members, looking seemingly lost in her own thoughts, waiting for the others to arrive before they began their first journey.

"Adam. Adam Kao." Adams voice sounded polite, however underneath, he wasn't exactly happy. He was already a little peeved that he hadnt got unpacked before the CO wanted to see the senior staff. "Chief Security and Tactical Officer." The turbolift arrived at deck two and the two officers walked together where they found their quarters next door to each other. Adam laughed a little. How ironic that the first person he should meet officially for this ship would be his next door neighbour.
Although not as spacious as the ones on the Detroit, these new quarters did have a bit of life to them. Placing his bag down next to the bed, Adam made his way to the bathroom and leaned over the sink, looking in the mirror. He sighed, wondering what Chad was doing right about now. He pushed himself away from the sink and made his way out of his quarters and back towards the turbolift, giving his uniform a little tug.
== 4 minutes later ==
Seeing the majority of the senior staff in one room had always made Adam nervous. After all, this is the first time he has been considered as senior staff. Usually, he was on the receiving end of orders and not actually participating in the solutions discussion. He made his way round to a spare chair next to the XO. As the next most senior ranked officer aboard, he assumed that the more juniors would look up to him...

Jackie was sitting at the head of the table, reading through a PADD, mentally preparing herself for what she was about to say. Jackie’s done briefings before, but few of them were addressing the senior staff of the entire starship.
‘Piece of cake…just remember, Mark said this is a piece of cake she thought, ‘yeah, piece of cake if you’ve been doing it for several years’ she mused, ‘okay…so this isn’t commanding a squadron, but a ship, you can handle it, Mark has yet to be wrong about everything you do’ she reminded herself, her brow furrowing slightly at the orders on the PADD as she thought things over.
Adam clicked his fingers in forgetfulness. He had a package for Lt. Commander Clawson that Rear Admiral Burton had given him before he departed. "Ma’am, permission to return to my quarters for something I seem to have forgotten?"
Jackie looked up, taking a quick glance around the room, the Marine Commanding Officer has yet to appear, and they still had a few minutes left before the briefing was to begin, at least people were on time.
She nodded.
“Go right ahead, Lieutenant? she said.
"Thankyou, ma’am." Adam nodded as he got up and jogged out the door. Re-entering the bridge, he made his way to the turbolift. Engineering crews were still busy putting the finishing touches on numerous stations, including his.
The turbolift arrived at the bridge and Adam walked in. Turning 180 degrees, the doors closed and he ordered it to deck two. A few seconds passed and the doors re-opened revealing the corridor. Adam jogged back out and down to the left, pressing the button on his door when he got to his quarters.
He walked in and looked over towards his bag. Emptying the contents across the bed, he found the small purple coloured box and moved back towards the door. He did one final look around just to make sure he had everything. Again, he clicked his fingers and picked up the PADD which accompanied the box.
Jogging back down the corridor, Adam called the turbolift back. Again, entering the lift he spun 180 degrees, this time ordering it to the bridge. The lift arrived and Adam jogged out again. Noticing the same engineers working, he jogged back into the briefing room. He moved back to his chair and sat down, letting out a little sigh.
Jackie looked up at her chief of security and tactical jogging back in and sitting down with a sigh.
“Everything all right, Lieutenant?? she asked, curiously raising an eyebrow but trying not too look too amused at the rushed officer’s actions.
"Yes ma’am. The admiral wanted me to pass something along to you, and I think this is the best time to do it." Adam passed the PADD to his CO and then the box.
Jackie took the PADD and the box, she glanced at the PADD holding the box in her other hand as she flipped it open with a swift motion of a claw.
She raised an eyebrow at the contents of the box, then read the PADD

2nd lt O'Neill had found her bunkroom..actually it wasn't a bunk room..as MXO she got a whole room to herself which was novel.
It was also a relief to find she wasn't bunked in with her Marine CO. It wasn't unusual for marines of both sexes to share, heck they were used to it, but...well that wasn't an issue. The Horizon was big enough for her to have her privacy.
As she began unpacking her grip, the shipwide PA burst into life.
“Attention all crew. This is your Captain speaking. Welcome aboard the USS Horizon. As much as I’d like to keep it festive, we’ve already received our first orders. All department heads; briefing in one hour.?
That must be the CO..the Caitian. Casey hadn't ever met one before..she'd seen a few, but not to converse with. The voice had a nice melodious tone to it, but there was steel there; she could hear it. That was a good sign in her book. Too many namby-pamby COs abounded in the Fleet.
She wasn't a warmonger, but trying to be diplomatic when someone was pounding the heck out the vessel you were being ferried in was taking the 'we come in peace' thing a bit too far in her view.
She still hadn't seen hide nor hair of the MCO, she thought, placing her things in orderly fashion inside cupboards and on shelves inside the room. Perhaps he'd gone straight to the briefing.
That would give her time to have a look at the Marine bilets, and stores, check what they did and didn't have available, meet the troops.
She WAS keen to find out what mission was in store, and whether they'd actually see any action..even if it was peacekeeping; that had its place in her world purview too.
She'd read something once, at the Academy she supposed she didn't actually recall, but it was a motto of some kind of peacekeeping service back on earth, before the big war.
'Protect and Serve' it had said. She liked that. It fit her idea of Marines in the Fleet.
Still wondering what their destination would be for their first run, Casey finished up what she was doing, and made her way out into Marine country....

On the right side of the Commander, Anise leaned forward a little listening to what the Commanding Officer had to say, of course she’s already gone over the information before hand, but it helped to listen, sometimes the COs revealed some more information to the entire senior staff then they told you even if you *were* the XO.
“The USS Einstein went missing while on a routine geological survey of Bareth Two.? Jackie keyed in a command making a projection Bareth Two pop up on the conference table before the senior staff.
Jackie stood up now gently leaning on the table, her tail swishing from side to side behind her as she spoke.
“StarFleet has received word that the Romulans are moving into the area for their own surveys for some reason. " Jackie said taking a look around the room at the faces of her senior staff.
She paused, mulling over the Genesis Device that was aboard the Einstein.
Anise looked at her quizzically, as if asking whether she was going to tell them about the Genesis Device, Jackie shook her head lightly. ‘need to know…and at this stage they don’t need to’ she thought, referring to her orders. Anise nodded, clasping her hands together on the table as she watched Jackie.
“We have orders to depart as soon as we are ready.? Jackie said. “Any questions?? She asked taking a look around the room as she sat back down and faced her senior staff.

Running full tilt for a little while would give him a chance to look over how the core works under pressure. A smile might have escaped his lips had he not been in a briefing. Jamie turned over the schematics in his head, working through the control systems diagnostic times.
“I would have wanted to do a complete diagnostic series, but I’m sure the ship yards did it themselves.? A note of disappointment crept in to his voice. “But there’s nothing like trial by fire, right?? He instantly regretted saying that, wondering if it was too impertinent. He quickly quieted down and waited for the meeting to end.

“Nothing like a real life scenario to test everything? she noted wryly. “I’m sure you’re jumping for an opportunity to see how the ship runs out of dry dock? she said, nodding her head a little. “you’ll get your chance, Lieutenant.? She said.
Jackie was quite eager to see how the ship ran itself, however she had to remain professional and focus her attention on her current position. She was no longer just a security officer/fighter wing commander aboard Harmon’s ship; she was a Commanding Officer, and she could hardly allow herself to get sidetracked by something like this. Yes she was eager to get the ship out from the Starbase and get going on their assigned mission, but she was now responsible for an entire crew, not just one or two departments.
Jackie knew she had to inform her senior staff about the device aboard the Einstein, but first she wanted to see their thoughts regarding the already tricky situation with the Romulans.
“Mr Dorval,? she said addressing her chief engineer “you are free to do a complete diagnostic should you see a need in it? she stated. “I don’t want any trouble from our side when we deal with the Romulans? she said. “I’d like to know why they’re suddenly so interested in geological surveys? she stated.

Jamie sits back in his chair and thinks for a moment. "I think we should do as many diagnostics as we can while maintaining warp. Considering time a factor on this mission...’
He takes one of the padds out of his pockets and brings up a systems document. "How quickly DO we need to be in the Bareth system?"
“As quickly as possible. The whereabouts of the Einstein remain a mystery, one that must be resolved as soon as possible? Jackie said. ‘given the cargo they were carrying, even sooner’ she thought
"It shouldn't be a problem to keep up high warp. We can just do low level diagnostics for now... I'm sure the ship yards wouldn't send us out with out a full inspection." Jamie caught himself rambling again. Something in the commander's tone bothered him. He decided to let it stand for the moment.
"Also, I'll work with cartography and see if we can't maximise the efficiency of the Horizon's sensors to find the Einstein as quickly as possible."
Jackie nodded lightly.
“Concentrate on looking for any signs of the Romulans. I have no desire to be caught off guard by …? she paused, feeling Anise’s surprised look at her side. “the Romulans if it can be avoided? she finished, fighting off calling them insulting names. “I’d prefer if we were the ones ahead of them than vice versa? she said, clasping her paws together to form a triangle with her fingers.
‘it’s in the past, leave it at that for now’ she thought to herself.
“if you have a way to find them and the Einsten, I’d like to know what it is.? she said.
"We'll look for Tetrion and Neutrino emissions, as well as rig up a Polaron beam. But unless they're travelling at warp, the chances of spotting a cloaked Romulan ship is pretty slim." Jamie shook his head.
“Do what you can, Lieutenant.? She said.
Jamie shook his head, he wished he did have another idea. "I'll review encounters on record, see there are any other bright ideas on how to see through cloaks... As for the Einstein... How long ago did it disappear?"
Jackie took in a breath and released it slowly before replying.
“The Einstein’s last contact with Starfleet was roughly a week ago. Starfleet isn’t hundred percent sure when they went missing, but the Einstein failed to report in when it was supposed to.? she said.
Jamie sensed that he'd monopolised enough, if not too much of this meeting. "Yes, ma'am. Either we'll see her when we get there or we'll have to search." Again Jamie shook his head. Something about this mission felt off. Maybe the fact of the new crew... no real shake down...Maybe it was just him.
Jackie smiled lightly.
“It’s either we find them or they find us, isn’t it, Lieutenant?? she asked. “It’s highly possible that the Romulans are blocking the Einstein’s communications with whatever they’re doing, but it’s also highly possible that the Einstein’s been compromised. We’ve no way to know for sure until we check it out. And that is what we’re going to do? she said.
The smile made him feel better, "Yes ma'am." He said, with some enthusiasm and a small, charming smile made a slight appearance on his face.
Jackie nodded.
She looked around the briefing room awaiting for any further questions before she were to add another factor into the mix.

“Given the nature of the Romulans, I’m still wondering what has gotten them so interested in geological surveys.? She said.
‘unless it’s because of the device aboard the Einstein, in which case they probably have their grubby hands on the Einstein.’ She thought to herself, thinking the situation over.
“They *are* on border of the Neutral Zone, as per last reports from Starfleet? Jackie noted. “we’re to find out exactly why, they claim it’s for geological surveys, but I sincerely doubt that? she noted with a sour note in her voice.

Jackie nodded lightly.
“There’s another reason Starfleet has assigned this particular mission to Task Force 17.? Jackie said, facing her senior staff. It was time to add the final piece of the puzzle.
“One that even the Federation sees as being a mistake, since the Einstein first went missing? She paused looking around the room.
“The Einstein was carrying a Genesis Device. If the Romulans have got a hold of it, I don’t think I need to mention what that can result in? she stated, her ears flickering a little. She pushed the feelings of dislike for the Romulans aside for now.
Jackie spoke in a soft, calm yet defiant voice that still managed to carry the authority she now had. The feline remained calm and collected as she briefed her senior staff, no matter how she really felt inside.
“Our job includes finding the Einstein, and retrieving and destroying the device at all costs. The Federation Council doesn’t want anything further to do with Genesis." The feline announced. “Quite clear why.? She said. ?we definitely can’t let the Romulans have the device.? She said, looking at the senior staff’s reaction the latest piece of information.
‘hoo boy.. what was it Mark said about command being a piece of cake?’ she though to herself. Now that she outlined the entire mission, things suddenly seemed way more complicated that your typical day to day running of two departments that she was so used to by now.
Jackie felt the coming need to have some coffee before tackling this issue.
‘Life’s a constant change, Jackie’ she reminded herself. ‘this was just one of those changes that you’re going to get used to given time. Just take the mission step by step’ she thought to herself.
“The fact that they are moving in to the Neutral Zone for ‘geological surveys, may have something to do with the Genesis Device as well as the Einstein itself. At this stage it’s unknown, and it’s one more thing that we have to figure out? She noted. “and the sooner we figure it out, the better off Starfleet will be? she said.
“Suggestions? Comments?? she asked looking around the table, her paws once again formed a triangle on the table as she regarded her staff awaiting their reaction at the new piece of information.

Since his arrival on the Horizon was a little later then planned thanks to a bunch of pilots who just *had* to follow the in-system speed limits, J'al ended up running through the halls towards the turbolift, then the bridge. He exited into the large openness of the bridge itself, and turned towards the Briefing room. He skidded to a stop at the door, causing everyone inside to hear a light thump as he hit the wall.
"5 years and you're still off balance..." he said to himself as he straightened up, and was ready to walk in and see his new crew-mates. Shaking off a little, he walked into an already running briefing. Not a good thing for a first impression, but he was on the transport in time.... the pilots decided to run late though. Not that he'd make that his excuse.
As he entered, Commander Clawson and the others looked over at the Caitian in the Black Collar. "Sorry for the lateness, Commander. Much to my objection, it could not be avoided." he said, standing and turning towards Commander Clawson. "Lt. J'al Grenn, Chief of Intelligence, reporting."
He knew her. Back in training, he had been in a mock air battle with her. He had experiance in the Caitian Defense Force's Combat Fighter units, so he gave her a run for her money, and she gave him one too. He had bumped her fighter to get into the crash that cost him his tail and several broken bones. To this day, he could not walk 100% as he did, and was not as balanced as he should be. He remembered she came to check on him afterwards to make sure he was OK, but he didn't see her after that. He also remembered her being quite attractive back then, and as he stood there waiting for an answer for that brief second, he couldn't help his mind moving in that direction again. But of course she just HAD to be his new Commanding Officer. Something that could complicate anyting he had in mind if they met again....

This was definitely a surprise. She didn’t remember seeing his name on the crew roster, must have been a late addition that she missed. Forcing back a smile, she nodded lightly instead. Meanwhilst she couldn’t help thinking exactly why after all these years their paths had crossed again, and now under some rather different circumstances.
“Very well Lieutenant Grenn. Take a seat? she waved him over to a seat at the table. “Let’s not stall this anymore than we have to. You may have some interesting suggestions for us.“

The mission was pretty interesting. At least to J'al. Like the Captain, he had some not so pleasent thoughts about the Romulans, but so did all Caitians.
"Well, we should assume they have the device. If it was destroyed, we could register the explosion on sensors from here by now." J'al said, looking over at the Commander.
"The Romulans don't see the Bareth system as valuable. It's in the Neutral Zone anyway. It's got no real resources like dilithium, or any other noteworthy substance. Their fleet movements have stayed away from Bareth recently as well. It has to be the Einstein that they are there for. Somehow they know what's onboard it, and took a chance."
J'al took a pause, and waited for a response. He glanced over at Lt. Mayweather. A Mayweather had served under his sister about a year before. He didn't check, but he thought she was the one. Kind of a small fleet when you think about it. Of course, being here under the command of Commander Jackie Clawson was proof enough of that. Thinking a little further as Jackie framed a reply, he added a little bit.
"All those suggestions for getting a probe in there are good, but I may be able to... obtain the sensor frequency of whatever Romulan ship is in that sector. That would be the easy part. Finding out which ship is there is the tough half.
It's a long shot, but if I can't get it, at least we have our Engineering geniuses to put their plan into effect. The kind of probe they are talking about could get about 300,000 kilometers away before being detected. If I can get the frequency, we could park it on their hull without them knowing."

“Assume the worst, that way at least we’ve got the worst case scenario covered and the best case scenario is usually not so hard to play off of? Jackie replied, thinking Grenn’s words over in her mind.
This was the first time she’d have to work with J’al when he wasn’t behind the controls of a fighter. But then again she didn’t really get much of a chance to work with him several years ago. She had to wonder why their paths crossed in such an interesting way after all these years.
Granted, the feline hardly expected her own command, let alone this. Life was funny at times.
She took in a breath, thinking things over.
“I hardly think they’re interested in the Bareth system especially considering the so called geological surveys they are so determined to run?
She paused, her tail flickering lightly behind her. Jackie narrowed her eyes.
“However, if they have the genesis Device already, question remains why haven’t they used it until now.? She posed the question before the senior staff. “Unless there are complications with the Device itself, or the Einstein haven’t given it up yet.? She pondered outloud.
She nodded to Grenn’s suggestion.
“Do what you have to do. Never hurts to have a back up plan.? She said
‘definitely not when it comes to flying, this isn’t that much different when you think about it, really.’ She thought.
She tapped her claws on the desktop in thought, then with a final tap she looked up, her expression serious.
“Helm. Set a course for the Bareth System. Lt Grenn work on getting that frequency out. Engineering, keep a probe ready.? She listed off the orders as if she’s been doing that quite regularly.
She heard almost a chorus of ‘aye’s’ as the senior staff complied.
“ Dismissed.? She said curtly.

Anise watched as Jackie handled the briefing. The Trill was still adjusting to her position as the ship’s Executive Officer.
‘Remind me once again, why did I take this on?’ she asked herself.
She wasn’t really sure of the answer to that particular questions. This was definitely something new for the Trill, however Anise was already itching to have a go at the helm of the Horizon. She stole a glance at Ensign Jaro, ship’s helms officer.
‘Lucky woman’ she thought to herself, wondering if there was a chance Jackie would ever let Anise have a go at the helm. However she had to remind herself that this wasn’t really her job anymore, and there was a slight chance she might get to pilot the Horizon one day for a few moments, provided Jaro had no problems with that.
Anise elaned back in her seat, listening to the two Caitains talk as they exchanged ideas back and forth. She thought it was rather ironic that not only was this the first time she was serving aboard a ship that had a Caitain as the Commanding Officer, but there was also another Caitain aboard. Most ships she’s served on had mostly human crew. Well as human as you get anyway.
She glanced at Jackie, the commanding officer seemed at ease in her position, even if she was as new to this as Anise herself was new at her own position. She figured, Jackie was already experienced in having some sort of a command background given how easy going she appeared.
‘either that or she’s a damn good actress’ Anise thought. Granted, one of her symbiont’s former hosts was quite good at hiding things, but his job required it. Not that command didn’t…
Part of the reason Anise was here, she felt was because of the Selmak symbiont; but granted ever since she took on the symbiont, things have gone to a more confusing level for the pilot. It was hard enough to get her own feelings, emotions, and temper in check and sorted out, now she had several life times of the Selmak symbiont to lean back on. All that came with a price. She also had the symbiont’s former hosts’ memories, thoughts, feelings, emotions, and even characteristics and likes and dislikes. Which at times made her feel more than just a little bit scitzophrenic.
Getting Selmak was a big change for her. Before she was joined Anise was your typical pilot. Reckless was just one way people described her. Insane was another, but either way after she received the symbiont, she had to one it down a notch. Maybe this was a good idea, getting the Executive Officer’s position aboard the Horizon. Although Anise had to wonder whether fate was laughing in her face, given who she had to work with.
Jackie’s commanding tone brought her back to the real world. She listed to the Commanding Officer issue orders before dismissing the senior staff. Soon they would be on their way to the Bareth system. Anise wasn’t sure what that would accomplish.
She stared out at the hologram of the Bareth system, lost in thought, as it was still flickering on the table as the senior staff filed out of the room scrambling to get to their posts and get their departments ready before Horizon was on it's way.

Jefferson bent down a read the card.
“The cheeky buggers!? he exclaimed causing the heads of passing crew to turn in surprise. One thing Jeffery hadn’t lost since retiring was his command voice.
He reached over and typed in the code he had been given for the bar, the doors came open with a whoosh.
“Damn you? he muttered as he entered “Damn you all?
He surveyed a room which looked as though a bomb had been detonated in it, at some point in the last 24 hour several Starfleet crew persons had decided to hold an end of project party in the lounge. Jefferson had no idea if it was yard workers or Horizon crew; to be frank he didn’t care. Heads would roll regardless.
“Well I’ll be damned if I’m cleaning this mess up.? He said as he turned towards the door “Computer located the Captain?

Jamie stood over the prope casing. Everything was ready but the frequency modulations that he'd been 'promised'. A standard probe was being readied to be fired in the chamber by a junior officer.
He sighed to himself.
He'd never worked with an Intel officer on board... the thought was nagging at him. He knew that every ship in the task force had at least one, but it was still new, different.
...Not to mention the Genesis device. The thought actually made him sweat alittle. If the Romulans got a hold of that. He disagreed with Lieutenant Grenn about the it having gone off by now if only because his guess is they'd taken it aboard to reverse engineer it. Why use one when you can mass produce them, especially if you planned on making a weapon.
Jamie did his best to put those thoughts out of his head, and tried to get back the PADD he'd just been handed, but concentration was a luxury right now. Another sigh escaped his lips.

Apparantly, getting sensor frequencies was harder then it used to be. Especially out on the edge of Federation space. Being the senior Intelligence Officer on board, and having clearance high enough to see documents equal to what the XO can see (Level 8) isn't enough anymore.... For some reason, Intel was guarding its Romulan information much more closley then it used to. Their own operatives couldn't even get everything they needed as often anymore.
" I swear they give me my assignment, and say to do it with a blindfold on..." J'al said under his breath as he tapped away at his console, going through files related to Romulan Sensor Frequencies. The information just wasn't available to him. He could file a request for it up the CoC to Captain Stone, senior Intel officer in the area, but the Engineers needed the information right now. Besides, Stone probably would deny it. After around 2 hours of sifting, and attempting, J'al finally gave up on it, and tried to get anything that they could use for the mission. After about another half hour, he had everything he could get his paws on.
He tapped his commbadge, pulling up the information he had. =/\= Lt. Grenn to Engineering. I can't get the sensor frequencies of that Romulan ship. But just so you guys know, it's probably a small one. Romulan Fleet movements show nothing bigger then a Raptor Class Destroyer in that sector in the last 4 weeks. At least officially. We can't exactly get a bead on any ships of the Tal'Shiar or Tal'Priex too often. =/\=

Jackie raised an eyebrow at the tone of the voice of the male human who stormed onto her bridge. She exchanged glanced with Anise, who nodded.
Jackie got up from her chair and leaving Anise to oversee the last of the set up, went into her ready room.
She's read up on Jefferey Jefferson, and been warned by StarFleet about him.
Usually she'd take offence to that kind of tone from someone who was under her command, but since he was a civilian first and foremost she let it slip past.
She made her way to her ready room, and faced the Lounge Manager. Clearly there was a problem that bothered him, so asking him if there was one didn't seem like a bright idea to the feline.
"What's the problem Mr Jefferson?" she asked, keeping her tone level and calm as she faced the Lounge manager.
"Problem?" Said Jefferson raising his eyebrow "problem?" his anger level raised a few notches, as if his manner hadn't indicated a problem.
"The problem captain" he said trying to keep his anger under control "is that your crew decided to have a party in the lounge last night"
"My crew didn't get aboard the Horizon until about seven hours, ago, Mr Jefferson" she replied calmly. "if there was a party they were involved in I was not informed about it"
"Have you seen the state it has been left in? Not to mention how much of my stock has been mauled?" He took a deep breath "Now I'm a very reasonable man but if you don't have that place cleaned up by the end of today I will be leaving."
He held up a hand to silence a reply from the Caitain "Worse for you will be the complaint I make to Starfleet about your lax command skills. You may be on the command track young lassie but you have a hell of a lot to learn about running a ship."
"We're just about ready to launch and head off to Bareth Two, however I'll see if I can arrange the base cleanup crews to clean up your lounge and refill your supplies." She said, "do you have a list of what was in stock with you?" she asked, her hands crossed on her chest, as she faced Jefferson, remaining neutral in her feelings towards the man.
Jefferson sighed "No Captain, you will do that." He straightened up slightly "or like I said, I'll be leaving the ship."
Jackie raised an eyebrow at that remark.
He produced a PADD and handed it to Jackie "As for my stock it's all on there, except for my exotic items which I had transported to my quarters." He coughed and added "and it seems a bloody good job I did."
"I'll make sure the base re-supplies you within the hour" she replied.
"One thing I'd like to point out though Captain" he said looking the Caitain up and down "Your senior crew may have arrived 7 hours ago, but the rest of your crew have been here for a week doing a hand over from the yard workers."
He smiled "It takes more than 7 hours to prepare a Starship to leave space dock, even a ship as ugly as this one."
"I'm well aware of that, Mr Jefferson. However I took command of the ship just a few hours ago. Anything before that happened under the watchful eye of the ECH." She stated. "Perhaps you should speak to him about your lounge as well" she stated, in a clipped tone.
“No Captain, you are my first port of call. The ECH was merely tasked with ensuring the bridge was manned, he was not in command of the vessel. Since you are in command now, and I found the issue a mere 10 minutes before it is your responsibility to deal with it.? Chris sighed when she heard that, "I just want to inform you Mr Grenn that that wasnt the smartest of ideas" She thought it over for a bit "Doing so would have alerted the Romulans in that area that Starfleet was looking into the sector, thus giving our mission away to them, more then likely the Empire will beef up Security or "research" in the area now as well"
Chris didn't wait for the man's reply either "The Sensor probe is ready and will be avablile for launch as soon as we are under way" she spoke out as the captain reentered the bridge.

Grenn listened to Mayfair's comment. He chuckled inwardly rather then get angry with her. People like that were just an ignorant annoyance to him. There wasn't much else to do for the time being. Apparantly, Mayfair had all his bases covered as well from her comments about his work. It hadn't been hard to get the Romulan codes from Intelligence. He didn't go hacking into Romulan databases for it.
If he had high enough access, he would know about Mayfair working for Covert Operations. A more secrative Intelligence branch then mainline Intel which he worked for. Worked for was a loose term. He was assigned to them after his incident with the Romulans in a fighter. Apparantly they liked something about him. He still didn't know what.
He had been looking over service records on the trip to the Horizon. One of them was Mayfair's. He needed to know the people he worked with, so he just took a glance at them that anyone would be able to. He added his clearance to see comments from former COs, XOs, and Medical personell that any normal crewmen would not see. Kind of a spook thing I guess you could say. Her service record was pretty ordinary. Several assignments, and one under his sister on Excelsior. But there were no comments on the record from former COs or XOs. Just medical information. Which was very odd. A CO or XO doesn't have to make a comment, so that wasn't too out of the ordinary, but R'alka always made comments about her crew when they left. Good or bad. He didn't think anything of it, and figured he would bring it up the next time they met. He had far more important work to do anyway.
Back on the Horizon, he kept an link with the nearest Starbase up so he could get any information on fleet movements. Anything could be a critical factor in a sensative mission like finding the Einstein and its cargo. So it paid to try and be in the know.
OFF: And before you ask, NO he's not going to find anything out about Mayfair :p That was just a passing interest to him. I'm not gonna have him go play superman and expose her or something :P He wouldn't be able to.

<Ready Room>
Jackie watched as Jefferson left her ready room after his last words. She had to admit he did have a point.
She glanced at her desk, they were not even out and around yet and she already had a number of PADDs piled up on her desk. Not that she ever had a desk that was free of PADDs.
She picked up the PADD Jefferson had left, with the required supplies and sent a request for a re-supply to StarBase Seventeen. She knew that the ship had been undergoing final preparations before their departure. An estimated time was just under two hours, just long enough to get the mess sorted out in the Lounge.
Jackie let out a sigh, her tail swishing behind her as she pondered what Jefferson had said. She admitted he had a very valid point when he said that it was her responsibility to deal with these things.
She shook her head lightly as she exited her Ready Room.
Anise looked up from the command chair, quite curious what that was all about. Jackie waved it off for now.
“Status? she asked.
“We can leave in an hour and a half? Anise replied vacating the centre chair.
“Might have to hold it up a little, wait until SB17 hands over the supplies for the lounge? Jackie said, not sure how long it would take them to fish out the necessary supplies.
Anise nodded.
Jackie took a look around the bridge, things seemed under control here for now.
“Contact me as soon as we’re ready to disembark? she said. With that the Caitain turned around and headed for the turbolift.
Anise looked as Jackie walked off, she shook her head a little; wondering what was up and where Jackie went off to, but Anise wasn’t really the type to pry that much.
She turned around, facing the main view screen as around her officers rushed about getting the Horizon ready for launch.
<Lounge>
After a brief stop of in her quarters for a quick change in attire, Jackie tapped in a code for the lounge and the doors swooshed open before her; she took a step inside and stopped.
“Holy Kats!? she exclaimed. “he wasn’t kiddin’? she surveyed the mess in the lounge.
She wondered what the place looked like when it was all cleaned up, considering she wasn’t the type to stick around the lounge that much; at least she wasn’t on the Rayden.
Jackie shrugged a little, letting out a sign. No time like the present to get to work.
Humming a little tune to herself, the Caitain set out to clean the mess up.
Almost two and a half hour later, due to Jackie’s non-stop toil, the lounge looked almost spotless. Jackie was putting away the trash into the recycler as her commbadge chirped.
=/\=Bridge to Commander Clawson=/\=
She tapped at it acknowledging the call.
=/\=the supplies for the lounge have arrived=/\= Anise’s voice came over the commlink. =/\=And the Horizon is fully prepped for launch. We’re just awaiting word on our clearance to launch=/\= Anise stated
“Understood, Have them sent down to the Lounge? Jackie said. “I’ll be up on the bridge shortly? she said, with that she cut off the connection with her Executive officer.
Taking a last look around the lounge, Jackie strode out and locked the doors. She headed for her quarters to change back into a uniform and head off to the bridge after having a much-needed mug of raktajino.
<Bridge>
As Jackie stepped onto the bridge someone called out ‘captain on deck’ she blinked a bit at the reference.
“Back to work people..Let’s get out of here, before the Rommies get any more hinky ideas? she said walking to the center of the bridge.
Anise vacated the centre seat, exchanging a few words with the Caitain before she took up her own seat.
“We have clearance to launch? Anise reported., “All base personnel has been escorted off the ship?
“Good, then let’s go? Jackie settled into the chair and faced the viewscreen. “Ensign Jaro, take us out.? She stated.
Anise anxiously watched as Jaro tapped in a variety of commands and the Horizon began pulling out of the bay.
Several minutes later, the Horizon pulled away from Starbase Seventeen, Jackie and Anise watched the base get smaller on the main viewscreen. Anise nodded lightly.
Jackie let out a small sigh.
“Course for Bareth Two set? Jaro said as she set a course for the bareth system and awaited the Commander’s orders.
“Let’s rock? Jackie narrowed her eyes, letting out a smile. “Engage Ensign?
As soon as she spoke those words, with a tap of the controls at the helm, the ship jumped into warp.

<Captain’s Ready Room>
Now that the Horizon was underway, Jackie left Anise on the bridge and retreated to her ready room to ponder more on the situation and get her mind off of things. So far command wasn’t too bad, but then they hadn’t exactly done much yet.
They were yet to face the enemy and get the Einstein and the Device back. Oh that’s right, Burton wanted the device destroyed. Well Starfleet wanted it destroyed.
She shifted through the information on the console in front of her as she sipped her raktajino.
<Bridge>
J'al had some information for the Captain to look over. He had found a few things out that she may want to know. And this could be a good opportunity to discuss a few things that were left unsettled at their last meeting.
Walking up, he rang the door chime
Jackie looked up briefly, holding her paws in a triangle like motion for a moment.
“Enter? she said, taking a swig to finish her raktajino off before the door slid open.
J'al walked in, a little nervous at first, but kept a straight face. "Captain." He said, putting the PADD he had on her desk. "I was able to retrieve the codes for the Romulan Border Net a while back. If we need to enter their space briefly, they won't know about it for a little while"
“Good work, Lieutenant? Jackie nodded, taking the PADD from her desk and skimming over it. “This will definitely give us an advantage? she noted.
He stood for a moment. IF not for the accident, he would have swooshed his tail a few times there to indicate his current mood. Without it, it was hard to tell. "So. I didn't get to talk to you much after our last meeting. Seems a good a time as any since we're going to be serving together"
Jackie nodded, motioning for him to take a seat.
“I was not aware you’ve been transferred to the Horizon? she admitted.
"Well, it was last minute" He said, sitting down. "Intel needed someone here, and I was on the Musashi, assisting them briefly with a new Intel officer. Since I was closest, I got the job."
“Ah? Jackie nodded. “How’re you holding up as Intel and.. otherwise?? she inquired.
"Intel's fine. I'd rather be flying, but this gives me a chance to see stuff an officer in my position shouldn't normally see" he said with a laugh. "Otherwise.... isn't so great. It's been 5 years, and I still hit a few walls, or trip in a rough ride occasionally." he said, putting his ankle up on his knee and crossing his legs.
“Yes.. flying..? Jackie tapped her fingers on the desk in front of her. “I’ve not flown in a short while and I miss it already? she smirked. “Five years? she paused, shaking her head. “I tell you you were just about the biggest challenge I’ve faced in a long time.? She noted. “too bad it didn’t end too well? she looked a bit apologetic.
"Well you were a hard one. I had to pull out moves... like that one... that I hadn't totally mastered yet, to catch you off guard." He laughed a little at a thought. "That 360 loop I pulled on you to port... and came up right on your back end when you rolled out of my line of fire.. was something I never got right until then" he said with another laugh.
Jackie smirked a little.
“took me awhile to get that loop right myself? Jackie admitted. “Comes in handy against pirates though.?
"Well, I'd be glad to try you on again sometime. I'm sure as Captain, you could.... borrow 2 fighters... or shuttles even from here at some point and we could have a little fun." J'al said, wanting more then the holodeck with its limited situations.
"The holodeck can be.... confining" he mentioned, leaning back in his chair
She nodded.
“Yes.. holodecks are a little restricting? she admitted. “But a safe way to start out testing your own manoeuvres before implementing them in a real time scenario? she noted, having had to come up with her own moves to keep her edge strong. “There aren’t any fighters aboard the Horizon.? She said. “And well I doubt flying the Horizon or a shuttle is quite the same..?
She liked the rush of things whilst being in a fighter. Anything else, seemed; slow.
"By far." J'al said. "I flew the Musashi briefly. An Akira isn't even as fun. It can get up and move, but nothing beats a fighter. Especially in an oxygen atmosphere with gravity pulling at you." he said, remembering a few good times. He put both feet on the ground again, and sat more comfortably in the chair. "Well, if nothing else, care for a drink? Not here, but down in the crew lounge."
Jackie smiled a little.
“I’m technically on duty now? she said, although granted; she had the air around her that she was always on duty whilst she was aboard the Rayden.
"You're always on duty. You can do better then that..." he said with a small smile
Jackie raised an eyebrow.
“Meaning what?? she asked.
"If you don't want to, then tell me no... But if you do, then there's no time like the present" he said, standing up, moving behind his chair, and putting his paws on it to lean.
Jackie faltered a little, looking at Grenn as he stood behind his chair.
‘how much can one drink hurt?’ she asked herself. ‘besides it’ll be good to catch up on things’
Jackie found herself giving a light nod to his comment; with a glance at her console she stood up.
“Allright..? she said. “Not like there’s anything pressing going on at the moment? she noted, besides if there was something that would come up, she’d be the first they’d call up.
"Good." Grenn said, standing up away form the chair. "I've had COs that never left their office. Man, did I pity them. Never even got out to hang around the crew lounge." he said as Jackie walked around the desk. J'al motioned her to the door since she was the higher officer, and followed suit, letting the doors close behind him.

The two Caitains made their way down to the lounge, finding it still locked, Jackie lightly shook her head, wondering why didn’t she think of that before they left the bridge.
“Well so much for that.. can still have a chat up on the ready room if you want? she said.
"Sounds good to me" J'al said, peering through the porthole on the door and cupping it so he could see in.
They left back for the bridge. As they walked Jackie was lost in her own thoughts, taking a look around the ship’s interior, pondering the current mission, the ironic twist that Grenn was here under her command.
<Bridge>
As they entered, Jackie asked for a status report so far. Thus far everything was operating smoothly. She gave a nod to Anise to remain in the command centre as she and Grenn headed for the ready room.
<Ready Room>
“So..what’ll it be?? Jackie asked, keying in a raktajino for herself into the replicator
"It will be Whisky straight up for me. No Alcohol. After all I'm on duty." he said, watching her key in the drink, then walking over and sitting down on the couch across from him. He couldn't help but notice she was still as attractive as he had remembered. But he pushed that out of his head as he took the drink from her.
Jackie raised an eyebrow.
“Whiskey’s not alcohol?? she asked handing him the drink and pausing to take a whiff of her raktajino before taking a seat.
"Thanks, Captain." he said, taking a sip and enjoying it. "You know what I'm talking about. It has that syntha... stuff in it."
Jackie chuckled lightly, taking a sip of her raktajino at that.
“Quite…? she said
"Uh-huh. So why aren't you flying fighters anymore?" he asked, still not having heard that story.
“I was up until about a month ago? she said. “Harmon thought I’d be good at this, and I needed something new after eleven years on the Rayden as Chief Sec/Tac and Wing Commander? she said. “I didn’t want to at first, but Mark can be very…persuasive?
"Wow. It's been about a year since I flew for Starfleet. After Intel picked me up, I haven't gotten to fly. Although I would jump at the chance if I could take it. But once you’re in Intel, I don't think you get out. That's OK though. I like it."
“Oh well.. there are holodecks.. of course it’s not like the real thing…? she said, shrugging a little. “Wonder if I can request a couple of fighters so the two of us can have some fun from time to time? she mused. “or just built our own..heh. ?
"Wouldn't be hard." J'al said, setting his drink down. "I've wanted to do that for a while in my spare time. But for real, not in the holodeck. I don't suppose there's space on an Intrepid to do that though." he said, smiling.
“We can use one of the storage bays to built, or in the shuttle bay.? She mused.
"Well that settles it I suppose. Next ghostyard we come across, we need to find some old, worn out fighter hulks and bring them back to life. I've always admired the designs from the early 24th Century." J'al said, getting excited at the idea.
Jackie nodded.
“I’ll keep that in mind? she said. “Meanwhilst we can work out the designs and specs? she noted. “I doubt we’ll get any parts until this mission’s over at least.?
"Fine by me. I don't want to replicate anything unless it is literally impossible to find it original anymore." he replied, sitting back again.
Jackie nodded.
“Original all the way…? she said smiling a little. “Can work on the design and simulations in the holodeck before we get everything sorted. If I get a list of what’s needed, I might be able to request some parts?
"Well now we're getting somewhere." J'al said, lightly hitting his hand on the couch. "We get a Hornet Class Fighter from 2310 with the original 9.98 Milli-Chochrane impulse drive, 6 point thruster assembly, and everything."
Jackie nodded.
“Excellent? she said. “WE’ll make the needed modifications to suit our purpose. Increase the max speeds a little.? She noted smiling lightly.
"Wouldn't be original to use one of our 16 Milli-Cochranes from today, but I can live with that. It's got a 2 seater cockpit with dual controls, so we could switch off in mid-flight instead of coming back and swapping out seats in a single seater."
He thought for a second. "If we take out the micro warp core those things had, we could install dual 10 Milli-Cochrane engines. One per vent."
Jackie thought about it for a few moments, as she sipped her raktajino.
“I’m not to fond of two- seaters myself? Jackie noted. “but that works…better draw up the schematics and test them on a holodeck first?
"I think I could do that.... And I think I can find one with a flawless hull, but no engine or interior to speak of..." J'al said, remembering a parts surplus depot on Starbase 887 that specialized in Starfleet fighter materials for requisition.
“I’ll dig around, Mark might know someone? she said.
"Ok, I will get the hull ordered, and draw up specs. Then we can both test them in the holodeck. You can get the engine, and interior sections taken care of. As for wiring, panels, seats, and everything else under the sun, we can start in after we get the main parts here."
Jackie nodded.
“Can work on specs and testing together? she suggested. “more ideas that way?
"Alright." J'al said, pulling a small PADD out of his pocket and tapping a few buttons on it with the attached Stylus. It is difficult for a Caitian finger to touch the screen on the small PADD properly without claws that can damage the screen. "Here" he said as he handed her the PADD with Hornet Class Fighter Specifications. "Now, we need to modify that to exclude the warp core, add dual 10s, and any other system changes that we will need to operate it as such?
Jackie looked over the specs, she found herself nodding her head as she envisioned what Grenn had proposed.

The Shuttle dropped out of warp and Powell could see the outlineo f hte ship ahead, it was wierd to get a transfer onto a ship in mid-mission but he was sure it would work out for the best. Every ship needs a doctor, regardless of the mission. The pilot of the small shuttle turned around to him.
"Hey Powell, we are almsot there get your stuff together and head to the back to the transport pad I'll tell you before your leaving." The guy said in a less than satisfied tone. Of course you couldnt really blame him no Federation transport was headed this way so they guy had been commandeered from his trade route just to transfer the doctor to the Horizon.
Of course the Starfleet Lt. still expected better treatment than that, atleast the occasional acknowledgement of rank or position. He could hear the muffled voices as he got on the transporter platform. It seemed as though the Rigellian was giving the poor comm officer quite a long complaint for beign asked to do this duty....Powell could sympathise. It had been a 2 day trip from Othello station to this sector, but it had felt like a lifetime.
In a few moments the insideo f hte shuttle fizzled away infront of him and he could see the inside of a Starfleet transporter room, the unmistakeble setting of the officer in charge straight ahead and the door to his right as he got off. No greeters were present so Powell slipped out the door and stopped a second.
"Computer, Quarters, Jake Powell." He queried the ships brain as he stood on the deck with his luggage. He assumed it would be in the back of sickbay but he hadn't been told where it was on this ship yet.

<< Jefferson’s Quarters – USS Horizon >>
“Stupid woman? Said Jefferson grumpily as he entered his quarters “stupid, stupid woman.? He threw his jacket on to his bed and walked over to replicator. ‘In my day they wouldn’t have given such a stupid woman command of a starship’ he thought to himself as he stood before the replicator motionless, he continued his internal monologue as his eyes darted around his room appraising things ‘even one as bad as this’
“Water, cold? he said still looking around his room, the glass materialised before him. Jeffery reached out and picked it up; taking a sip he tried to relax his muscles a little. ‘I’m getting too old for all this’ he thought to himself as he sat down in the reclining chair someone in Starfleet had assigned to his room.
“Definitely too old? he muttered as his eyelids began feeling heavy, minutes later Jefferson was asleep snoring in a manner reminiscent of 20th century fog horns.
<Some time later>
Jeffery awoke with a start dropping his still full glass on to the floor as he did so. “Bugger it? he muttered as he reached to pick the glass up. Returning the glass to the replicator he hit the recycle button.
“I suppose I’d better send the Captain a peace offering? he said to himself as he stretched the kinks from his old bones “don’t want her getting the idea I was actually mad at her earlier?
Walking over to the chest by his bed Jefferson tapped in his code, the chest opened with a hiss. Reaching inside he pulled several plain looking jars, he looked each one over intently as if deep in thought. Eventually he chose the one he wanted, placing the other jars back Jeffery pulled out some old fashioned kitchen tools. He placed them on his desk before reaching back in to the chest and pulling out a large flask.
He poured a measure of water from the flask in to one of the tool’s he had picked up earlier, hitting a button the sound of boiling water soon appeared. He reached in to the chest again and pulled out a Starfleet issue thermal cup, opening the jar he breathed in deeply inhaling the scent released. He took a small spoon from the desk and dumped some of the contents in to the thermal mug. As soon as the water was boiled he poured it in to the cup too, stirring the contents with the spoon.
“Wonderful? he said with a smile as he peered at the contents. He placed it on a tray along with a bowl of sugar and a jug of milk. Tapping a few commands in to computer the tray dissolved in the blue haze of a transporter beam.
<<Captains Ready Room>>
The tray rematerialised on the Captains desk, awaiting her return.
<<Jefferson’s Quarters>>
“I hope she likes Columbian coffee? He said as he cleared up “I also hope I covered my tracks properly, it wouldn’t do for anyone to know old Jefferson was being nice.?
Sitting down in his chair again he smiled once more “You know talking to yourself is the first sign of madness? he said to himself. Completely unbidden a thought rose in his brain ‘No attacking a Borg held Starbase is the first sign’
Jeffery drifted back off to sleep wondering where that thought had come from, and wondering why he couldn’t shift it from his brain.

It took Dorval a moment before realising this was in fact his office. Shaking him self out of the work he was looking at, he spoke.
"Come in."
An Ensign entered with a PADD. Dorval looked up and waited, smiling weakly.
"Sir, we're ready with the probe and waiting on the captain, and we can't do any of the diagonsitics or tests you've asked for at warp... so we've gotten to talking and come up with a few ideas on what we can do. I mean, there isn't much maintenance this soon out of dry dock."
Jamie reached up for the PADD and started reading. The Ensign continued.
"We heard a rumour that you like to try... um.... creative power usage. So there are a ideas about that. We figure you could take it further on this ship. The only problem is the gel packs. They are a lot more then isolinear junctions. But we came up with some quick and dirty work arounds."
Dorval was only half listening, half scanning down the list of modifications and emergency options.
"Some of this stuff is really creative. I mean, it'd only work in a pinch, but that's what it's for, right? Lets take a closer look at some of this." Dorval got up out of his chair and headed for the door. He was really smiling now.

After a moment, the computer replied in the standard tone, "One is capable of supporting life."
"Computer, show that planet in detail," Jen said, and her eyes lit up. This is one of only a handful of Class-L planets naturally capable of supporting life, and would be a gem for her upcoming thesis on 'The Natural Capability of Class-L Planets to Support Life.' "Computer, save this planet to my research. End research mode, and return to normal astrometric operations."
What was to be a normal day looking over sensor logs turned into yet another day spent pouring over research for her paper. Jen knew that this report would not be ready by publication date, and was needed to focus on other activities, but, as things have for years with her, she can't get out of her head and continues to focus on what is currently driving her.
The end of her shift came rather quickly, and Jen turned towards the door. She stretched as she stood up from the chair she had been in for three hours. Sub Commander Jerok stood silent in his quarters as he watched a small light blink on and off 6 times. The decorative model of the Einstein that adorned his desk served a dual role, first it showed anyone who entered his room that Duane O’Connor loved the ship he served as engineer on, secondly its unique running lights configuration allowed the Tal’shiar to pass messages along to him secretly.
Living among the Starfleet Officers aboard this ship hadn’t been easy. Maintaining his cover at every moment, knowing that even in his room he would be subject to security recordings.
By tomorrow it would be over, the Einstein delivered to its new owners. More importantly the Romulan Star Empire would finally have a working Genesis device.
He smiled as he finished putting on his uniform, with one last glance at his model of the Einstein he smiled and left. To begin his final days work in Engineering.

“Duane? Called the Chief Engineering Officer “Something is wrong with the external communications rely, take a look at it would you??
“Sure? Said Duane picking up his tool kit, no one caught sight of the grin on his face as he walked off. As he thought, there was no one in engineering paying attention to the failures he had caused, all day they had been running around like headless chickens trying to solve one failure after another.
This final systems failure was in Duane O’Connor’s field of expertise, communications. Many months ago the Tal’shiar had been pleased to find their operative had been selected for the Engineering Alpha Team. This meant he got extra access to the ships systems, and he would always be called first when there’s an issue to deal with.
As he climbed in to a jefferies tube his alpha team status proved very useful indeed.

“Red Alert, Captain to the bridge? Came a voice over the comm as the klaxons began sounding.
The captain strode on to the bridge seconds later “Status XO?? he asked as he took his seat.
“We’re receiving a distress signal from the Romulan Neutral Zone? Replied the Executive Officer as he routed some sensor data to the Captain’s chair.
“On screen? Said the Captain looking up from his chair’s console
A Romulan Commander appeared on the screen
“To all ships in range, Romulan, Federation, or otherwise. This is Commander I’Tar of the IRV Khazara? The Romulan looked worried as he spoke “We have been attacked and boarded by unknown troops, I repeat we have been boarded by unknown troops. Please respond?
The message cut off abruptly. Leaving the Captain feeling unsure of his next course of action,
“Sir? Said the science officer quickly “the Starfleet registry shows the IRV Khazara as a Romulan vessel currently assigned to the 4th fleet.?
“With permission to transit through the neutral zone to return to Romulan space?? Asked the XO.
“Apparently so? was the only reply, everyone knew that exchange vessels were granted permission to cross the neutral zone when they needed to get home.
The captain sat quietly for a few moments before coming to a decision. “It seems that we have little choice in this matter, Comm’s signal Starfleet Command. Inform them we are entering the neutral zone to confirm reports of an attack on the IRV Khazara.?
The Captain looked over to his Executive Officer who nodded once, indicating he agreed with the decision. Despite their cargo neither the Captain nor the Executive Officer could ignore this signal.
“Helm, set in a course for the Khazara’s last know position, warp 9.? He paused for a second before adding “Engage?.

Two long fruitless hours had left the Einstein unable to find the Khazara; it was as though the ship had disappeared completely. The science department had been unable to detect any traces of weapons fire, or any subspace traces to indicate recent impulse or warp travel in the area.
Without warning explosions ripped through the Einstein’s power grid crippling the ship. Above and behind the Einstein the majestic form of the Valdore Class IRV Kahnar decloaked, and began beaming Reman Commando’s on to the Einstein in an effort to secure the vessel before its crew could react.
<<Bridge – USS Einstein>>
“Red alert? Screamed the Captain as he picked himself from the floor where he and been unceremonially dumped by an explosion.
“Intruder alert, decks 5 through 9 and on decks 15, 16, 17? Came the booming voice of the chief security officer?
“Security to deck 15? cried the Executive Officer as he appeared out of the smoky haze “Captain they’re-?
“I know? said the Captain cutting him off “We’ve been had.? Almost without pause he gave his next order “Comm’s signal Starfleet, we need re-enforcements immediately.?
<<Bridge – IRV Kahnar>>
The face of Duane O’Connor appeared on the Kahnar’s view screen, he bowed his head as Commander I’Tar came in to view.
“Commander? he said with a smile “I have secured the device.?
“This is truly a great day for the Romulan Star Empire? Said Commander I’Tar as thoughts of the power a Genesis device would bring for the Star Empire and more importantly for himself.

"Lovely!" Adam said at the sign of the flowers in his ward room. The sarcasm was there, and he made it show, although he had to admit they did look nice. He sat down at the desk on the opposite side of the door and rubbed his hands across the shiny surface, finishing off by leaning back in the high backed chair and interlocking his fingers behind his head. He let out a small sigh as he thought that he had better get some work done. He opened the current outstanding investigations and scrolled down. There was one. Filed earlier today by Jeffrey Jefferson, the bar manager. He frowned as he remembered an investigation a while back he was part on. Bar managers weren't exactly the best of people to work with when they were hacked off about something that had happened in their bar. He read the report with slight disinterest. Basically, it highlighted the main points of what had happened in the bar, and they were, basically, someone or someones had had some kind of function in it without permission, and they didn't leave it in a very nice order.
"Computer, locate Mr. Jefferson." Adam thought that he might as well make an appearance. The computer replied stating that the individual was currently in his quarters. Adam got up, streched a little and down loaded the information on the file to a PADD. He then moved round the desk, giving the flowers one last look and smiling, shaking his head slightly as he exited.
<<Jeffersons Quarters - Outside>>
Adam walked up to the door. He tugged his uniform just a little and rang the chime. No answer. He rang it again. Little did he know that the second ring would be the ring that would get his head bitten off...

Jackie conferred with Anise on the bridge as the Horizon glided to its destination. They were still some time away from the last point the Einstein was seen on.
Everyone on the bridge was going about their duties, Jackie idly tapped at something in the arm of her chair, crosschecking things with a PADD in her hands before looking up at the mainscreen then back over at Anise. Both pretty much shared similar feelings about the mission.
They hoped they weren’t too late, but their success will depend a lot on when the Romulans find them once they get there. Hopefully they won’t find the Horizon on time, Jackie preferred the element of surprise on their side. But then again, things didn’t always go in their favour.
They could only guess what happened with the Einstein and what happened with the Genesis Device. Why did Starfleet start playing around with the Genesis after what happened last time, anyway?
“I need to do some more… digging around? she said.
Jackie stood up once again, taking a look around the bridge she nodded briskly to Anise, passing over the command baton to her for the time being as she disappeared into her ready room to do some more thinking.
<Ready Room>
Jackie walked in, holding a PADD with the latest status report outlined in more details than Anise briefed her on.
She smelled a whiff of coffee in the room, blinking she looked up, her PADD briefly forgotten.
‘Columbian?’ she thought, picking up the aroma as she spotted the tray on her desk.
Momentarily the mission and the PADD now at her side were forgotten as she made her way towards the tray with the coffee. She looked it over, wondering who could’ve left it there and when, considering no one came into her ready room whilst she was on the bridge.
She looked the tray over, looking at the coffee, feeling a whiff of it hit her senses. This was the real thing.
Wondering who the mystery gift was from Jackie poured herself a cup and settled in behind her desk facing her console.
She called up the current mission brief. Called up a few files dealing with the genesis device that she had access to, they weren’t detailed, but it was enough for now. Starfleet didn’t want the device falling into the wrong hands, so why the hell were they experimenting with it again? After the last time, didn’t’ they learn?
She sipped at the coffee, idling a bit at the smell and taste of it; this had to be one of the best she’s tasted to date.
Nearly an hour later, Jackie was still poring over the various files on screen of her console, coffee on the side.
She sat back, wondering what would the Romulans do with the Genesis device. Sur they could use it right there and then, but if they already had it, why didn’t they use it? They’d probably want to study it in more detail, see how it works, see if they can reproduce it, because even if the device is destroyed, the Romulans would know enough to build their own and use that.
“Crud…? Jackie mouthed as realisation hit her. She couldn’t let that happen.
Mind set on the mission they were facing, the realization that just hit the Caitain just made her more determined to not let the Romuland win this time around, Jackie strode back onto the bridge.

Anise watched as the Caitain strode off the bridge at a brisk pace, tail swishing behind her. Anise couldn’t help but wonder what was on her Commanding Officer’s mind.
She had a feeling it had something to do with the Genesis and the Einstein, which was a rather obvious feeling she told herself. It didn’t take a trill with several life times to figure this one out.
‘Like what else would she be thinking about?’ Anise wondered silently to herself.
She keyed in a command in the arm of the chair, bringing up the latest up to date ships status. So far everything looked normal. Part of her wondered whether it would be so once they run into the Romulans.
Anise looked up briefly to see Jackie exiting the ready room and heading toward her, their eyes met, Jackie nodded lightly, she looked a bit more alert than she’s been when she left the bridge, as if either she got a jolf of caffeine in her system or she dug up something disturbing. But Anise didn’t query the Captain as she stepped towards the centre chair and took command of the ship once again.
She looked at the viewscreen, her mind on their current mission. Beside her Anise followed Jackie’s gaze as the bridge of the Horizon bustled with activity.
With each passing second they drew closer to their destination. Closer to finding the answers to the questions posed. Soon they’ll find out what happened to the Einstein and how much the Romulans knew about the Genesis device already.

“I bloody well hope this is someone telling me my bar is ship shape again? he said to himself as he pulled on a jumper.
“I swear, me and that captain will have words if its not.?
Opening the door he found himself face to face with a dark haired young lad, Jefferson fought the urge to cuff him round the head for being so damn young. Instead he chose to verbally abuse the young security officer.
“Wow? Said Jeffery with a sly smile “I wasn’t aware that Starfleet needed to employ teenagers to do their monkey work? he chuckled “So how old are you lad? 12 maybe 13??

Jackie sat on the bridge, intently staring at the main viewer as she was lost in thought. Her mind was going over the variety of possible scenarios with the Genesis device and what could’ve happened to the Einstein.
She had so many unanswered questions. But wasn’t it always like that? There were more unanswered questions than those that had the answers to?
Jackie looked at the console built into the command chair’s arm and idly tapped at it to bring up their latest status. They were still some distance away from the Romulan border and the Einstein’s last reported position.
Jackie tapped at the console, looking over the scrolling data, as she was lost in her own thoughts, she failed to notice that Anise was speaking to her, until she felt a hand on her shoulder.
The feline blinked looking up from the console and noticing Anise in the seat near her. She raised an eyebrow silently prodding her XO to say what was on her mind.
The Trill mulled things over a bit before saying anything.
“Think the Einstein’s still in one piece?? she asked.
“Let’s hope so, but I wouldn’t bet on it, given who we’re dealing with? Jackie replied.
“Think they’re pulling out the schematics of the device?? Anise asked, keeping her tone quiet so only Jackie could hear.
Jackie nodded slowly.
“It’d be in their best interests to study the device rather than use it right away. If they use it, that’s that, but if they study it they can build their own.? She said.
Anise nodded.
“Can’t let that happen.? Anise said matter-of-factly.
“Nope? Jackie replied pausing briefly to look at the main viewer once again where the star field was moving past them.
“Don’t intend to let it happen.? She said her tone set.
“What’re you going to do?? Anise inquired, curious to that.
Jackie shrugged lightly, her eyes narrowing as she rubbed her chin in thought a bit.
“Something that’ll get the device from the Romulans and makes sure whoever from the Romulans knows about the ins and outs of it isn’t alive to pass on the knowledge to the rest? She said, her tone level.
Anise raised an eyebrow , surprised at the response from the Caitain, but then again, she had a feeling she probably would come to the same conclusion herself given the situation at hand.

Young? 12? Adam looked a little miffed. Mind you, Jefferson wasn't young. Adam looked the man up and down. He just stared and thought to himself that Jefferson must have been around mid seventies if not older. How can someone his age be that grumpy? Adam could only wish and hope he'd never be like that.
"Mr. Jefferson, I assume?" Adam didn’t want to respond to the ageism remark. He was chief security officer of the ship and didn’t want to alienate the crew, even if this was the lounge manager.
Jeffery’s lip curled as the young man spoke, ‘I’ve miss estimated this one he thought to himself’ his face dropped back to his impassive mask as he spoke “Indeed it is? Jefferson pointed to the name plate by the door “I’m sure your great detective skills allowed you to realise that?
"You filed a report of criminal damage to your lounge, sir?"
‘A criminal report?’ Jefferson smiled to himself “No lad, I put a rocket up the CO’s behind. It’s her ship and she needs to realise she’s responsible for everything that goes on aboard it.?
"I see. How do you wish me to proceed with this, as we don't have closed circuit television like they did when you were young sir." Adam couldn't help it. The remark just came out. Why? He doesn’t know.
Jefferson resisted the urge to reach out and cuff the officer around the head, it was something he knew he had gotten away with in the past as a Master Chief Petty Officer. Some how he doubted he could get away with it now, maybe in a few days he thought to himself.
“Well obviously lad, I want you to use the internal sensor network? he gave the security officer a look of distain “Apparently its vastly superior to CCTV, most security personnel know this. Maybe in your case they’ve sent the new boy to me for a long stand?? Without waiting for a reply Jeffery stepped back in to his room and let the door close behind him.
It was obvious Jefferson wasn't impressed with it. Adam nodded with the request and moved away from the door and headed to the bridge to see what’s going on there.

Jamie Dorval walked down the corridor absentmindedly. His shift had ended and he’d walked his second through the interesting quirks he’d found so far in the Horizon. Despite being off duty, he was still reading a PADD. He arrived at a turbolift and thought for a moment.
“Computer… where is the crew lounge??
“Deck two.?
“Well… Take me there.?
<Lounge>
Dorval entered the lounge and looked around. It was fairly empty. ‘I suppose this was the first shift rotation where people were be likely to show up’ he thought to himself. He walked to the replicator and thought for a moment.
“Computer, I’d like… a bowl of Kanas city style chili, spicy, a baked potato, a green salad and a glass of blended fruit juice.?
He blinked a moment. He hadn’t realized he’d been that hungry, but it was 1500 hours and he hadn’t eaten since breakfast. The chili smelled good and he salivated. Picking up the tray, he didn’t see any senior officers or engineering staff around so he sat by him self and tucked in.
He pulled up the PADD again and made a few notes. He couldn’t help but be impressed with his new staff. They were top of the class mostly, fresh out of the academy, and a few who were on they’re second assignment to pass on experience. The ideas they’d presented him with were good, even if some of them were unfeasible. But they fit well with his interpretation of how a ship should work. It all comes down to power distribution.
His eye caught the window… the warp streaked stars flying by, and his mind went to the Romulans they were bound to encounter. He shook off the thought that maybe he should work in starship design.
The chili was really good.

"Captain, I believe I have something you might be interested in" Grenn said from behind her. He was at his console directly behind the Captain and XO's chairs, and leaned forward to talk to them without the need for them to get up.
"From what I can tell, the Romulan ship is still right where we thought it was. Patching into the border's sensor-net, and into a few small.... enhanced links in the grid, I can get a decent picture of what is going on where the Einstein was last seen. There is s still a ship there, but it is not sending out an ILF signal. The only way to disable one of those on a Starfleet ship is to destroy the ship itself. So it can't be the Einstein." J'al said, after double checking the readings he was getting.
"When we launch our probe, we can get a better picture. I already gave Lt. Dorval the frequency to set its shields at. The Romulan sensors should be the same frequency that I had him set it at, so they will not be able to see it unless it gets less then 300 kilometers from their ship."

The moment Liz touched consciousness, pain flooded her hardly responsive body. Her head slowly bobbed up as her neck popped one, two... five times from having her head limp for so long. She struggled to open her eyes and found that it pained her to open her right eye. The smell of blood wafted into her nose. Liz tried to reach her hands up to her face to find the source of her cut, yet her hands would not move. She could feel her arms wrapped around her back, yes, they were still there, but nothing came from her hands. Alarm quickly rushed over her like a tidal wave.
They couldn't have done that, she thought to herself, panic stricken, yet unable to do anything about it. "No, I have to stay calm," she mouthed, her voice hardly above a whisper. Around her, all she could make out was a green control panel maybe 15 feet away. Coming into focus, she was able to make out a green, box-like entrance. It didn't take her long to recognize an energy field when she saw one. They had caged her up. She twisted her head around as far as she could and made out that she was tied to a makeshift chair of some sorts. The chair was no bigger than a stool, she saw, using the light barely shed from the green force field in front of her. Even more of a sight, she was relieved to see two hands attached to her arms. Restraints made of some alloy had bound them. She guessed that they had been cutting off her circulation.
For the first time since her consciousness, she moaned, finding her ears were barely responsive. She made a mouthing gesture as her ears quickly popped, together, and she moaned again to see the different response her ears would give her. Along with the moan was the distinct sound of warp engines vibrating. They must have run out of placement quarters, she said inwardly. Trying to laugh, she was only able to make out a cough that, with it, came blood shed straight to her gold and black uniform.
Finally, her senses came to her and she realized where she was. The green ultimately made sense, combined with half a memory of what she had been doing right before waking up in this pathetic state. She was aboard a Romulan ship. Sent by Starfleet Security beforehand to the USS Einstein, something had gone wrong -- terribly wrong -- and she found herself here. A frown involuntarily plagued her face. Blasted Romulans.
Just as she began to recall her incident, a hum that she hadn't realized until then, that of the force field, stopped and the green lights surrounding her cell failed. Two blurry figures from the darkness beyond stormed into the cell, grabbed her by each arm and slipped her out of her chair. Her limp legs failed from under her as she tried to stand her ground. They immediately began to drag her toward a distant part of the room. With all her will she tried to struggle, yet with all her pain, her struggle was subdued by her own body. She gave up. She gave up struggling, gave up moving, and gave up consciousness once again. Darkness consumed her.
<<An Insurmountable Period of Time Earlier>>
"Shuttle Sierra requesting clearance to dock. Please advise, Einstein." Liz pecked around at her console, opening an audio channel to the Starfleet vessel in front of her.
"USS Einstein acknowledges." A rather smooth yet professional male voice calmly replied over the comm. She could recognize a good looking man just through his voice. "Shuttle Sierra granted access to Shuttle Bay 1. Please release control of Sierra to Einstein's autopilot." Liz saw a red image lit on her panel. "I hate this part of the trip," she muttered to no one as she released all control of her shuttle to a computer. "Aknowledged." She trusted more in her human touch than in the cold parts of a hunk of equipment some fat Starfleet scientist had spent years on, cooped up in some laboratory, devoting his life to a pile of parts.
The Sierra eased on into the docking bay with its bright lights illuminating her hull. As the shuttle passed right through the force field of the bay, she noticed a few officers in gold uniforms performing this and that on various panels throughout the bay. The shuttle touched solid duritanium as it ever-so-lightly found ground on the shuttle bay's floor. Her side door immediately decompressed and slid open as a staircase unfolded before her. Grabbing her black duffle bag from the chair in front of the door and slinging it over her shoulder, she exited Sierra. In front of her, a blue figure in a red top strutted towards her, bowing slightly before her with his hands still positioned around his back. Liz involuntarily returned the gesture of professionalism by extending her hand. The Bolian uncomfortably parted with his hand-lock behind his back as he extended his and waited for Liz to shake it up and down and again.
"Lieutenant Commander Dratix," the blue officer said. "First officer on the Einstein."
That was odd, Liz thought. Command personnel instead of those in science commanding the vessel. She released her hand from his and introduced herself, "Elizabeth Fox, Starfleet Security."
"Please," Dratix quickly returned his hand lock behind his back, "Follow me." Liz proceeded to trail the bright blue figure out of the shuttle bay.
Passing more officers in blue science jumpsuits than not, Liz quickened her pace to catch up with the walk of the Commander. Dratix acknowledged her presence as he looked over, unconcerned, and repositioned his eyes back to the path in front of them.
After a few minutes of walking, they came to large cargo bay-like doors. The audible whirring of the doors opening came just as they approached them. Stepping inside, the ceiling appeared to be at least a hundred feet tall, maybe more. Inside there were two tiers of busy workers in blue jumpsuits scurrying around with PADDs and various equipment, no doubt diagnostic tools. In the center lay the one item coveted by nearly all governments, empires, and anyone who knew of its existence: the Genesis Device.
<<Romulan Ship, An Insurmountable Period of Time Later>>
The pain of her bruised back being nonchalantly released onto a hard metal seat quickly woke Liz. She opened her eyes to see a figure in dark green clothing with extended ears bark at two other figures behind her, "Leave us."
A mechanical whir started once and then repeated itself as silence overtook the room. A calm voice, yet with the power of a knife through butter, broke the silence, "Commander I'Tar of the Romulan Imperial guard. I trust you find your stay comfortable, Elizabeth."
That was enough to get her attention. She straightened up as best she could and glared at him with her one good eye. This was a textbook situation for her, one for which she had trained extensively at Starfleet Academy. Her name and her serial number were all she was permitted to reveal.
The sly Romulan sneered at her in what he must have thought was a grin. "You'll find that's not all I know about you, Miss Fox. Tell me, though, what do you know of the Genesis device?"
"Lieutenant Elizabeth Fox, Serial Number 9-oh-3-2-Kappa --"
The Romulan Commander joined her, "4-1-Beta. Yes, there's no sense in reminding me of who you are. Again, what do you know of the Genesis device?"
Liz began to repeat herself, prepared to do this all day, her body permitting. Before she could finish her name, the Romulan Commander pressed something on his display. Immediately, a force field like restraint covered her entire body up to her neck, effectively rendering her immobile. Pain found its way throughout her entire body as the divulgence of her serial number turned into a loud then muffled scream. Unable to convulse because of the field that engulfed her, all of the expression that her body yearned to release came through her face. Miraculously, the pain stopped. Liz released a long-held breath through both her nose and her mouth as she gasped back and forth, trying to replenish the air in her lungs. Panting, she still felt the remnant pain of whatever he was doing to her.
"I truly desire not to harm your fragile body, Miss Fox. Again, please tell me what I need to know." The Romulan Commander reached for a dial on his desk and slowly cranked it up. Liz knew all too well what that meant. He was dialing up her pain.
Fragile... a lot he knew about fragile. With all her strength back, she could have easily taken him down. Unfortunately for her, not only was she severely weakened, but her entire body was incarcerated at the mercy of a merciless being.
A pause swept the room as Liz, not considering telling the Romulan anything, but rather catching her breath started again. "Lieutenant --"
A swift jab from the commander's hand to his panel sent Liz in pain once again. As her head convulsed, she struggled to withhold her screams, knowing that it would only mean concession to his torture. For now, all she could do was sit and wait for rescue... or death.
<<An Insurmountable Period of Time Earlier>>
"This is the Genesis Device," the Bolian began. Of course it was. Liz had been briefed on it, seen pictures, read up on the schematics, and come to terms that it was her job to coordinate the security of this greatly important device. Datrix obviously had a flair for stating the obvious. "The security department of the Einstein is at your disposal for the remainder of the voyage. Please coordinate with Ensign Marr in security." The Bolian finally turned to her -- Liz was still giving it the once over -- and concluded, "Any questions?"
"Thank you, Commander," Liz replied. "That will be all." Though subordinate in rank, her position in Starfleet was well over his. The Bolian acknowledged her, slightly perturbed by her superiority, and left the room.
Just as the doors closed shut behind him, Liz tapped her communication badge, "Fox to Security."
"Marr here."
"I'd like to see you and a half-dozen of your staff in Gamma Lab in 20 minutes."
"Aye, sir."
Liz tapped her comm badge, effectively closing her connection with Marr. She began to approach the device, not even getting a glance, from what she could tell, from the science staff around her. Everyone seemed to be as busy as bees, working around the clock to maintain the device. It was strange, she thought, that such a large device didn't have maintenance tools. As important as this technology was to the Federation, she anticipated a long, uneventful trip. At least she could finish reading her book.
An unexpected jolt suddenly shook the ship as circuits overloaded, sparks flew, and power fluctuated. Most of the lights in the room suddenly went red as alarm klaxons began to blare, echoing loudly throughout both decks of the room. Immediately, both decks gave way to green particles as they assembled nearly a dozen people. Romulans. Liz immediately reached for her waist in response to the threat, yet her fingers were unable to find a phaser. "Damn!" she yelled as the Romulans dispersed from their formation, firing disruptor shots all around the room. Running, she dropped from her feet to her butt, sliding across the room to the nearest Romulan, kicking away his feet from under him. His disruptor flew into the air several feet away from them. Liz felt her body take over her brain as she punched left, kicked low, and fired away body shots from her amazingly trained facilities. Back and forth the two went, each landing no more than a quarter of their shots. Unaware of anything behind her, she found herself lifted up into the air by another Romulan and thrown against a solid side of the Genesis device. As she opened her eyes, aching all over yet ready to rebound, she found herself unknowingly aboard a foreign, dark vessel with green plastered all over the room, staring a disruptor in the face. For a split second, she heard the device hum.
<<Romulan Ship, An Insurmountable Period of Time Later>>
She woke up in her cell the same way she had awakened the last time. Apparently, her body had given way to the pain and she had been dragged back. This time, the pain seemed to originate from one source only: her head. Whatever it was with which the Romulan Commander, whose name escaped her now, had tortured her had left her with the worst migraine she had ever experienced. She groaned and keeled over in her chair to the ground below her feet. Either the lights or her vision flickered as the force field surrounding the cell seemed to fluctuate and then quickly regained power. The cloaking device, she realized.

"Sir!" The voice came from the distance as Adam swung round and fired his phaser into the JemHadar soldier that was literally behind him about to knock him out with the butt of his rifle. The JemHadar fell to the ground and disappeared. The scene changed, and Adam was alone in a cargo bay. A phaser rifle appeared next to him as the computer began the three second countdown. Adam picked up the rifle and made a run for the containers at the back of the room. Leaping over them, head first, he rolled, crouched and turned, glancing over the containers as Borg entered the cargo bay. Four were ear the door, and two more on the top level. Adam nipped up and popped the first one off the balcony. He came crashing down over the rail and into some explosive substances being stored. Suddenly, two of the Borg on his level were on fire, but still moving toward him.
"Oh this is just great!" Adam said to himself. He nipped up again and popped off the second one from the top level. He just collapsed. "No mellow-dramatics there, then." He still had the four on his level to contend with, and he knew he didn't have enough shots to take them out. He remodulated his phaser to a wide beam setting. He fired, knocking one of the fire drones out along with a non-fire drown. He did it again to the other two, but alas... Adaptation had come into play. A few choice words were said as Adam turned the rifle round, so he had the chamber in his hand and the butt at the other end. He took a deep breath... "CHARGE!"
"What the hell!?" Adam looked around as he lay on the floor. Someone or something had stopped his training program, hence the missing of the jump kick he had so perfectly timed. He looked towards the exit and there stood PO1 Sultrak. Sultrak raised an eyebrow and approached Adam.
"I am curious, lieutenant. Why do humans continuiously try to endanger themselves?" Sultrak, with his infinite logic, still couldn't understand the human urge for survival.
"What do you want, Sultrak?" Adam didnt have the time or patience to go into it. After all, how would you feel if a Vulcan cut off your training programs?
"Just to report that everything is currently in order across the ship, lieutenant."
"Is that it?"
"Indeed."
"Fine, thanks. Dismissed."
Sultrak raised an eyebrow, but did as ordered and about turned, leaving Adam still on the floor, looking round the black and yellow grid.
"Sometimes I wonder why I even bother..."

“Commander? Said the ships tactical officer from his post, “long range sensors are picking up a Federation vessel entering the system?
Commander I'Tar looked up from his PADD towards his tactical officer, his eyes narrowed momentarily before he spoke. “Have my orders been carried out?? he enquired.
“Yes commander? Said the Tactical Officer as he looked down towards his console, he read from a list displayed there “The interrogations have begun in earnest, we have towed away the Einstein and left a small debris field near the planet?
“Good? He clasped his hands together “I don't want anything to go wrong with this, capturing the genesis device and one Starfleet vessel was a stroke of genius? he smiled “Capturing two Starfleet vessels would be the master stroke of the century?
“Indeed? Said the tactical officer soothingly, playing the Commanders ego successfully “It will be remembered for years to come?
“Cloak the ship!? Said I'Tar “And withdraw to Romulan space?
“It will be done? Said the Tactical officer as he cloaked the vessel. He nodded to the helm officer as the cloak became active, very slowly the majestic Romulan vessel turned its nose towards its own boarders and left the contested area of space.
Commander I'Tar stood up and walked over to his science officers console “Are we leaving? he paused as he tried to remember the word “bread crumbs??
“Yes Commander, only the most inept Starfleet Officer would fail to see our engine trail. There is no way they will be able to ignore it?
I'Tar smiled once more “I will be in the interrogation room, should the Federation Vessel begin following us too soon let me know?
“By your command, Commander? Said the science officer with a small bow.
<<Interrogation Room – IRV Kahnar>>
As I'Tar strode in to the Kahnar's interrogation chambers he heard a cacophony of screams and raised voices. It was almost music to his ears hearing his enemies brought to their knees.
As he passed a row of sub rooms he found almost ever occupant had passed out from the pain administered to them, only one officer remained awake. He read the PADD that lay outside the door, the room contained one Liz Fox, a security officer aboard the Einstein.
Replacing the PADD he stepped inside, he smiled to the prostrate officer “Hello Ms Fox, I am Commander I'Tar.? As he sat down he spoke once more “How about you and I have a little chat?

The Intrepid Class USS Horizon dropped out of warp on the edge of the system, it slowed to impulse power before heading on towards the planet. The bridge was almost silent as everyone waited with baited breath for Commander Clawson to give the order to stop.

<USS Horizon - Bridge>
As the ship dropped out of warp, Jackie stood up.
“On screenâ€Â?? she stated, throwing a look at the Ops station.
The Ensign at ops complied and brought the visual up for all to see. No magnification was necessary.
Jackie̢۪s eyes locked to the screen just ahead, the image of their destination onscreen. Tail swishing she walked ahead, observing the image of the planet floating on the screen.
Anise watched the Commander intently, wondering what she was thinking. Jackie turned around regarding the bridge for a few moments before turning back to the screen ahead. No words were necessary between the two.
Jackie regarded Jaro at work at the helm controls, as the Bajoran woman smoothly guided the ship forward, inching closer towards the planet.
“All stop, Ensignâ€Â?? she finally spoke, issuing the order to Jaro at the helm controls who complied as soon as she heard the words.
They’ve arrived, now came the hard partâ€Â¦somewhere out there, the Romulans were lurking , possibly in possession of the Einstein, her crew and definitely in possession of the Genesis device. It was up to the Horizon and her crew to get the device back and see what happened with the Einstein.
Part of Jackie didn̢۪t want to even see another Romulan. Not after the last time, but another part of her couldn̢۪t wait to see exactly who was responsible. The Genesis device on its own was dangerous, in the hands of the Romulans the danger was significantly higher.
“Mr Kao.â€Â?? She spoke addressing to the chief security/tactical officer. “Keep an eye on those sensors, I don’t’ want any sudden surprises from our friends out thereâ€Â?? she said, nodding in the general direction of the planet on the screen.
“Mr Grenn, what’s the status of that probe of yoursâ€Â?? she asked.
