Thomas was laying down on his bunk, propped up with pillows, trying to finish a novel, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six. Every so many lines, he'd make a sigh and shake his head. He finally got disgusted enough with the book he throw it down on the floor, and sat up.

Cruiser: And they were suppose to be the best their countries had to offer? Their tactics sucked. Wouldn't of worked in the real world.

Thomas ran a hand over his head, and realized that he could feel some hair on the sides. It was about time for another high and tight cut. He put on a shirt, and left the visitor quarters, to find the barber, and something to eat.

It didn't take him long to find the place, and there was no one waiting. It didn't take the barber long at all to shave what little hair their was on the sides, and trim the top up a bit more.

Another 2 minutes, and Thomas found the lounge area. There was only one empty table, luckily near the viewport, and he took a seat. The place was pretty loud and crowded, it was of course lunch time, but it didn't take long for a waitress to make it over to him.

Waitress: Can I get you something sir?

Cruiser: Yes ma'am. I'd like a warp core breach and a filet migon, medium well done, side of vegetables, and a baked potatoes with butter and cheese.

The waitress read the order back to him from her little padd, and then went off to the next table taking orders.

As he waited, Thomas looked out the viewport's window, as the starfield moved by at warp speed. It felt good to be away from Mars and the Marine academy, back out in space.. even if it meant taking a demotion to get his request approved.

His thoughts were interrupted though by a sweet, North Eastern American accent.

Cruiser: I'm sorry, what did you say?

Thomas turned to look at who was talking to him, and he had to do his best to control the look on his face.

Before him stood a gorgeous woman, about 5 foot 5 inches tall, with dark curly hair, and a olive complexion, with a very nice figure.

Nicosia: I'm sorry to intrude, but I was wondering if I could sit here with you?

Cruiser: *trying his best to not sound cocky* With me? What do I owe this pleasure? *Tom got up and pulled out a chair for his new friend.*

Nicosia: Thank you. You can thank the large crowd, this seems to be one of the only tables with any open seats.

Thomas looked around the room, and hated to admit it, but she was telling the truth. There were a couple of open seats at a table with a Ferengi, but that was about it.

Cruiser: Oh, I see. I've already ordered something to eat, I can get the waitress to get you something as well, if you want. *Tom paused.* My treat, for having to put up with my company.

He tried to give her a smile that didn't say "I want to get in your pants", but he was also trying to charm her at the same time.

Nicosia: Really? Thank you very much. My name is Dena.

Tom spotted the waitress, and waved her over.

Cruiser: Thomas, but you can call me Tom.

Nicosia: Have you eaten here before? I got on at the last port.

Cruiser: *Taking a look at her again, he made a guess that she was Italian.* Yes I have, you should try the lasagna. It's pretty good for ship made, probably nothing like your used to back home.

Dena looked at him and smiled. She gave the waitress her order, Lasagna and some wine.

Nicosia: Your good. Most people think I'm Greek.

Tom: Thank you. Your accent gave it away. There's a large Italian community in the north east US.

Dena: *Laughs a little bit* Yes, I'm from New Jersey. Very impressive. You seem to be able to read people pretty good.

Tom: NJ you say? No kidding. I'm from Bridgeton. It's a small galaxy. What part are you from?

The waitress returned with both orders, and put it down in front of them, and headed off to tend to other customers.

Dena: Small galaxy indeed. I'm from Atlantic City. That steak looks delicious.

Tom cut off a small piece, and offered her to her, which she took willingly.

Dena: I don't think I've ever had such a good piece of steak on a transport before. I'll have to try that later, since I'm stuck on here for another couple of days.

Cruiser: Wait, your going to Starbase 17 as well?

Dena: Let me guess, so are you? We start having any more coindences, I'm going to get worried.

She smiled at him, one that was more relaxed, yet a bit more provocative then the one earlier.

Cruiser: Well, I'll be. Station crew?

Nicosia: Fortunately no, I've been assigned to the Horizon.

Tom stopped chewing and just sort of stared at her, before remembering to close his mouth and start chewing again.

Nicosia: This is really freaky, you as well? Seems like someone's trying to tell us something.

Cruiser: Yeah, I'd say.. of all the people on this big transport, we meet up. Never thought there was such a thing as fate, but maybe I'm wrong. I'm 2LT Cruiser, Marine Detachment Commander.

Nicosia: Oh, I'm sure we'll get to see alot of each other then, since your a ground pounder. Ensign Nicosia, Nurse.

Cruiser: *Chuckling* Maybe we should just go get married now and get it over with, since everything else has been laid out for us.

Nicosia: *Almost choking on her food* Oh, I'm sure my family would love to hear how I met a complete stranger, found out we were from nearby towns, and going to the same place, had a lunch, and got married. They'd be looking to break your knee caps for sure.

Tom had to take a couple of seconds to figure out if she was being serious or not, and finally decided she was just having a laugh. But he wondered if her family did have some ties to the Atlantic City families.

TBC: Me :-)

O'Neill had been working up a sweat doing a few reps and she still wasn't happy. She'd been doing this for over two hours now and she knew she'd have to spend even more time if she wanted to get herself in peak condition. She hated seeing sloppy, unfit marines - ones who looked like they spent more time PIGGING out than working out - and not being a hypocrite she strove to keep herself as toned and battle ready as possible. She'd gone through the lower body work with an ease borne of practice - but she still needed some serious work on her upper body.
She knew she was lacking in that regard. She glanced down at herself and grinned a little; Muscle-wise anyway.

The new equipment was heavy - she didn't want to start feeling fatigued just from CARRYING it for God's sake. The main problem was that she just wasn't genetically BUILT to carry large muscle mass - so she had that to contend with as well.
It meant she had to work harder and longer than some of her colleagues, but as it was something she'd come to accept at Basic Training it wasn't the huge annoyance it had been from the off.
She grit her teeth and started over with the pull-ups on the high beam, only stopping again when her muscles began quivering with the strain.
Sod genetics - she'd just have to do the best with what she had - same as always.
She let go of the bar and pumped her forearm - checking the bicep development. Ok that would be sore as hell if she didn't take the time for a proper warm down - maybe a hot bath if she could find a 'real' one.

As she worked out, pushing herself just those few extra reps, and trying not wince or make any freaky grunting noises, she noticed she was drawing attention from one of the other patrons. This one she'd seen before..a security Ensign, Malin Trell; she thought she remembered he'd said he was awaiting transfer or something.
He'd tried to engage her in conversation a few times already but he gave her an odd crawly feelin up the back of her spine so she'd rebuffed him. He hadn't liked that, although she'd bitten her tongue and been pleasant about it.

Trell: ::approaching her with what was definitely a sneer on his face:: Are the marines so short on staff they need little girls to fight these days?

O'Neill: I don't know..have you come over for a fight?

Someone nearby snickered much to Trell's obvious annoyance. His eyes narrowed.

Trell: Shame they can't employ your MOUTH seeing as the rest of you is so undersized - you could probably TALK any hostiles to death

O'Neill: ::grabbing a towel and wiping herself down:: Whereas all YOU need to do is BREATHE on them ::She gave him her sweetest smile:: You might try a stronger mouthwash..for all our sakes...

Trell muttered something that sounded like 'witch' but probably wasn't and started towards her, stopping only when he seemed to remember just where he was. He raised a finger at her.

Trell: ::in a low voice:: Watch your back marine

As Casey left she sighed to herself..another great start to a new career.

Background info and set up for the mission stuff…this takes place before everyone starts arriving obviously. So, time frame would be about three weeks prior to people arriving at the base.

ON

<USS Rayden>
<CO’s Ready Room>

The tall human male paced in his Ready Room, with a she-kat in front of him watching his every move intently as he spoke.

“Sir…?? Jackie blinked looking at Harmon like he was insane.

“You’ve been doing a double duty aboard the Rayden how long?? he asked.

“6 years.? She spoke up, not counting the 5 years she’d spent as Chief of Security/Tactical n the Rayden prior to becoming the wing Commander as per Mark Harmon’s suggestions.

“Hell I came from Commander to Admiral whilst you were still aboard.?

Jackie nodded lightly.

“Eleven years.? She said.

“Don’t you think it’s time to move on?? Mark Harmon spoke looking at the feline.

“move on to.. what…exactly?? she asked.

“I’ve been working on something.? He said, approaching his desk, he reached for a PADD and handed it over to her.

Jackie looked uncertain as she took the PADD from Harmon and took a look at it.

“Command the Horizon?? Jackie blinked, reading the data padd again. Yep, it had her name as a recommendation from Harmon as to who should command the Horizon.

She looked askance at him, he looked back.

“I know you can do it Commander.? Harmon said. “I’ve seen you work your squadrons and I’ve seen you work the bridge in Scuito’s absence on numerous occasions? Harmon replied, referring to his Executive Officer.

Jackie eyed him, still surprised at what she’d just read. She was being offered her own command.

“I’ve spoken to Rear Admiral Martin Burton.? Harmon said. “With some further training, we both believe you can do it.? He said. “Surely you must be getting bored of being on the Rayden all this time.? He said smiling a little.

Jackie shrugged.

“Rarely have the time to be bored on this job, Sir.? She said.

“Knowing you, I wouldn’t contest that? Harmon smirked a little, knowing how feisty she could get in the middle of a battle.

Jackie looked up from the PADD and glanced over at Mark Harmon again; trying to see if he was serious or not. Not that the PADD didn’t prove that he was serious about this.

“Whu.. ah…it’s a big.. step? she said.

“Has that ever stopped you before?? he asked giving her a sly smile. He’s been around long enough to know his Chief Security/Tactical Officer and Wing Commander’s ‘quirks’ even if she still managed to surprise him now and again.

Jackie shook her head, smiling a little.

“Not really…? she said.

“Exactly..? he replied. “You’ll do fine.? He re-assured her.

“Yes but.. I like flying and I like security/tactical? she said.

“Nothing stopping you from taking over the helm/tactical/security once in a while if you want to? he said.

Jackie raised an eyebrow.

“COs prerogative? he replied smugly. “just don’t do it too often or your crew will think you don’t trust them? he added. “and there are always holodecks.?

Jackie nodded

“S’pose….? She stretched the word out a little.

Mark could see she wasn’t sure, but she was fighting with herself, because when Jackie was thrown a challenge she rarely backed down from it until she got it accomplished.

“Besides Admiral Burton was quite impressed with your record.? Harmon said.

“Um.. I ah..? Jackie began. “Admiral, it’s uh…?

“Never occurred to you?? he asked.

She shook her head, although she took a command course at the academy long ago, that was purely to help her with her fighter wing, or so she thought.

“Well, the idea came up. There isn’t anyone else aboard here I can recommend.? He paused looking at the pilot and security/tactical officer sitting by his desk. He found it a weird combination for someone to go into, both flying and security and tactical, but Jackie was someone who tended to be able to juggle the two without much of a problem it seemed.

Then again maybe it was the coffee. Harmon knew from personal experience that coffee helped him think better when there was a difficult mission ahead or he had to make a difficult decision

Jackie looked back at the PADD, re-reading the contents again. Mark let out a small sigh and walked over to the replicator, keying in an order, he retrieved two hot mugs of black coffee, just the way he and Jackie liked them.

He walked back to his desk, Jackie seemed oblivious to him moving around as she feline’s tail twitched a bit beside her indicating that she was thinking about something. Harmon placed his mug on his desk and regarded the feline for a few moments.

“ ‘s time to move on hotshot? Mark said.

Jackie blinked raising an eyebrow, Harmon rarely called her by her callsign.

“Coffee?? he offered her a mug.

Jackie placed the PADD on Harmon’s desk and took the mug from him.

“Thank You.? She replied.

“Helps me think? he stated picking up his own. “I know this isn’t an easy decision.? He said.

Jackie took a sip of her coffee, silently, still pondering the offer. She wrapped her hands around the mug taking a whiff of the aroma into her lungs as she took in a deep breath.

“If you’re wondering how difficult it is.? He said “it’s a piece of cake, once you get used to it.?

Jackie smirked a little.

“You can take some time to think it through, we *are* on shore leave right now? he reminded her.

Jackie nodded, she took in a deep breath.

“I’lldoit? she said quickly, letting the breath out.

Mark chuckled lightly.

“Sorry didn’t quite catch that, Commander.? He said to her.

Jackie paused, taking another sip of her coffee before replying in a crisp tone.

“I’ll do it, Admiral? she said firmly.

Admiral Mark Harmon smiled as Jackie wondered what did she just get herself into.

<<Shuttle Bremer>>
<Early 2403>

Jeffery watched the two large Vulcan cruisers approach he knew that Fleet Captain Zack Marshal-Bennett would be cursing his name right now; it brought a little smile to the Master Chief Petty Officers face. Not a single person on that ship truly understood what he’d given to the Federation in the last 50 or so years, yes they had all suffered hardship in one form or another but they hadn’t lost 2 wives, 3 children and the number of lovers Jeffery had.

He craned his neck back to inspect the two devices filling most of the shuttles floors space, before Jeffery had stolen the shuttle two high powered tricobolt demolition charges had been loaded aboard. Both had been calibrated to a specific yield just enough to disrupt subspace for a short period of time, but neither had a high enough yield to create a subspace tear.

Oh superior the Vulcan’s must have felt knowing that the Federations Flagship was only sending one single type 9 shuttle after them. Deep down Jeffery had found it hard to like the Vulcan’s a species, he had always admired the way they strived to conquer their emotions. But that was also his issue with them emotions were for taming not for conquering, every human had to learn to live with their emotions not learn to ignore them. Jefferson supposed this was the reason he held President Spock in such high regard, externally he held his emotions as well as any Vulcan. In private however he embraced his emotions, better than Jefferson himself was capable off.

The console in front of him beeped bringing him from his thoughts. The Vulcan vessels were entering weapons range; taking manual control of the shuttle Jefferson began weaving the small nimble craft in between the phaser blasts of the Vulcan ship. It only took him two minutes to reach the right area to detonate the weapons, reaching forward he hit button to start the timer. Sighing deeply he sat back in his seat ready to kick back and welcome the end of his life the same way he started it – kicking and screaming.

<<Unknown Location>>
<Unknown Timeframe>

Jeffery was aware of a bright blue light, as it dissipated he suddenly realised he wasn’t aboard the Bremer anymore. From somewhere behind his head Jefferson could hear someone walking down a barren corridor, whoever it was it seemed like they were military trained.

A shadow fell over Jeffery from behind as the sound of footsteps ceased. “Mr Jefferson, we have a lot to talk about? said a mystery voice.

<<Starfleet Command – Earth>>
<April 1st 2381>

“So Mr Jefferson are you sure we can’t convince you to stay on?? Said Admiral Jacobs “Hello Mr Jefferson? he added a few minutes later as he moved his hand in front of the now Ex Master Chief Petty Officer

“Oh sorry?? said Jeffery feeling more than a little disoriented, he looked around the room slowly drinking in the sights around him. He tried remembering how he got here or what he had for breakfast but found his mind completely blank, looking directly at the Starfleet Admiral in front of him “convince me to stay?? he asked utterly confounded.

“Ever the joker? Said Jacobs with a large grin “Yes, Starfleet needs enlisted crewmen like you Mr Jefferson. We will be sorry to see you go you’re an asset the fleet can ill afford to loose.? Jacobs stood up and walked over to the only cabinet Jeffery could see in the room, he opened the top draw and pulled out a few PADD’s he passed two of them to Jeffery. “The first is your official notification of separation from Starfleet, your now officially a civilian.?

“And the second?? asked Jeffery glancing down.

“The second is a set of orders allowing you to use Starfleet Transport to reach Star base 17; you’re being given the chance to run a lounge on the USS Horizon.? Jacobs handed a third PADD “Here’s a little background on the ships crew, I know you well enough to know you wont be happy turning up blind? Jacobs smiled once before adding “For the last time your dismissed Mr Jefferson.?

<Temporary Quarters>

Clara's bunk was small, far smaller than the quarters she had become accustomed to on the Gallant and she hoped that she would not have to stand them long. It wasn't that she was claustrophobic, but she, like most people, liked her space. It would still be several days before the ship arrived, and until then she had been lucky enough to secure an empty room, despite its size. She hoped it would remain her's alone until she was able to move to the ship, although the double bunk caused serious doubt on the matter.

She picked up a PADD from the pile of several which lay before her crossed legs and activated it. A starchart, which to anyone who was not a pilot would have appeared as jibberish appeared, and Clara quietly studied it. She sighed. As much as she enjoyed studying such things, and she was one of the few who genuinely did, her hands were itching to get behind the controls of a ship again. She was nervous about it, getting to know the feel and habits of a new ship was always a little intimidating, but she couldn't wait.

The mechanical whistle of the doorbell rang its simple tune and Clara looked up towards the door.

"Come."

The doors slid apart and Clara's heart jumped in surprise at the sight of a familiar face. Dena Nicosia, a strikingly beautiful woman, and Clara's former roommate at the Academy entered and smiled.

"What the hell are you doing here?"

Clara wasn't immediately certain as to how to answer her friend, and simply stood to wrap her in a hug. "I've been re-assigned, I'm here for a few days until my ship arrives."

Dena grinned, and playfully pushed her friend away. "Me too. Guess you're going to have to put up with me for a while." The Italian beauty flung her bag to the top bunk. "Just like old times."

"I'll do my best to survive it." The two women laughed, falling easily into their friendly routine. Clara cleared the PADDs from the bed to allow them to sit, which they did. "So where are you off to from here? More medical transports?" Anyone who knew her, knew Dena's dislike of Medical ships, despite her passion for the job.

"I struck gold, this time. USS Horizon. Good ship, damn good CO, I hear, and most importantly not a medical mission in sight."

Clara's jaw hit the floor with a thump, but she quickly closed it and pushed her friend, playfully. "You're joking. That's my ship."

Dena blinked, and although Clara knew her to be, more often then not, a tease, she registered genuine surprise. "No."

Clara nodded an emphatic "yes".

"Well, damn. The universe must be telling me something." Dena's smile returned as she spoke.

"What do you mean?"

"I met a Marine on the transport over. He's assigned to the ship too."

"And let me guess, he was very interested in you."

Dena coloured at the reference to her ease when it came to attracting men. "No." She did not even try to mask the lie.

"Do I detect a gleam of interest?"

Dena merely shrugged. "We'll see. But let's get outta here, Clara. I'm starving."

"Alright." The women stood and walked the two meters between their bed and the door. "What's this Marine's name, anyways?" The door opened and they passed into the hall, both women feeling far better about their assignment than they had when arriving.

<DEEP SPACE 4>

Thomas James Matthews sat at a small desk in his quarters at Deep Space 4, with Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience" in hand. He read intently, immersing himself in new knowledge, new concepts. Well... not quite so new, this was at least his 20th time reading the essay, yet he always found something new, something interesting to grasp from it.

Suddenly, Thom's communicator beeped. After nearly jumping out of his seat in a startled motion, Thom heard "Thom, come to my quarters, there is something we need to discuss." "Yes sir" Thom replied to the voice he recognized, the voice of Deep Space 4's councelor, Lieutenant Commander Alex Horan. Thom stood, adjusted his uniform, and walked out into the corridor.

Nearly 5 minutes after leaving his quarters, he arrived at the quarters of Councelor Horan. He was quickly let into the quarters. "Sit," said Horan in his gruff 64 year old voice. Horan looked at his assistant and smiled, "Earlier this year recommendations were asked for the crew of a new starship being constructed, named the USS Horizon. Being that your assignment here is finished, and your having superb qualifications, I recommended you. I just recieved word that you have been chosen as the Ship's Councelor for the Horizon. Congradulations, son." Horan winked at Thom.

Thom sat in awe for a few seconds, then proceeded to (in great excitement) walk over and shake hands with his mentor of the past 3 years. Councelor Horan stood, they smiled at eachother, and hugged. "You're leaving for Starbase 17 tomorrow, where the Horizon is docked." the councelor said with a smile.

The past three years were both a trying, yet exciting time. Thom had bonded, and formed a great friendship with the Councelor of Deep Space 4. But suddenly - it hit him. This would be one of the last meetings in months, or even years that he would have with his mentor, his friend. But Thom's personality did not allow him to be sad. No - with his mother's Buddhist background, his father's calm, and the wisdom he had gained through his travels of past times, Thom lived in the now. He stood in overwhelming joy, in the friendship he had gained and that at this moment, he could share that friendship.

"Let us celebrate!" the councelor spoke, "Let us go to the pub!" he spoke. "But you know I don't drink," Thom said, in a mild South African accent. With his spiritual nature, and his reverence for the body as a temple, thom did not indulge in what he felt would defame this temple. The councelor chuckled, "I know son, I know. I was just pulling your chain. But we should celebrate, son. Let me show you something..." they proceeded down the corridor, to the Main Bridge of Deep Space 4. As they entered, everyone yelled "Congradulations!"

With his friendly and warm nature, Thom had earned the friendship of many aboard Deep Space 4. Commodore Simko (the station's Commanding Officer) approached him, and shook his hand. "Congradulations, Dr. Matthews" he said. "You have been a great asset to the well being of the crew of this great station. I have no doubts that you will do the same for the Horizon!" Commodore Simko removed the golden pin with a black dot from the neck of Thom's uniform, and replaced it with a simply golden one. "Congradulations, Ensign" he said with a wink, "you've been promoted also!"

That evening, some of the crew members had a celebration in honor of the new assignment and promotion for Ensign Matthews. The next day, he boarded the U.S.S. Cochrane, which was heading for Starbase 17. He said his long goodbyes and proceeded onto the Cochrane.

At arrival of Starbase 17, Thom could see a docked Intrepid class starship with the words "U.S.S. Horizon" on it. For the first time, he would truly be able to be part of a great exploration of the galaxy. Although it would be a few days before going aboard the ship, he was quite excited for the future ahead.

Part two.. sorta…

ON

<Shuttle Prometheus – en route to SB17>

Two weeks after being offered her own command and accepting it, Jackie had just finished going over the appropriate documentation and training required to take the job. She was still waiting for confirmation and appropriate clearance required to take the ship over completely.

It was difficult to say goodbye to Harmon and the Rayden crew; but Mark had promised to check in on her once in a while just in case. Not to mention to keep in touch on how they were both doing.

Now Jackie was piloting a shuttle heading towards StarBase 17; there were a few more people with her on the shuttle. There was a human, a trill and a half-Klingon. All were unknown to Jackie, but the human and the Trill seemed to know each other or at least they seemed to have managed to strike up a conversation of sorts somewhere along the line; whilst the half Klingon just seemed to brood over something he kept reading on the PADD in his hands.

Jackie glanced around swiftly before turning back to the shuttle controls. She took a giant leap several weeks back, but with Harmon’s reassurance and with all re-fresher training required to assume command completed, Jackie didn’t’ think it would be a big problem.

She hoped everything was cleared up by now, but she would know that for sure once she got to the base, unless they contacted her first. So far everything was clear for her to take over the Horizon, she’s yet to receive her final confirmation and detailed crew profiles.

‘course, last time you thought it wouldn’t be a problem you ended up walking into an ambush’ she thought to herself.

Jackie tapped at the controls, idly ignoring the conversation going on behind her for a few moments. The feline still had trouble believing she had agreed to this. The reality has yet to set in and she’s yet to see the Horizon.

The Horizon was an Intrepid class starship. Jackie thought those were rather sleek, but she’s only piloted one several times in her lifetime; now she would be in charge of the entire ship.

“this is just like running a fighter wing, only you’re on a starship and you run the entire ship? Harmon reminded her two weeks ago.

Jackie was slightly edgy with anticipation of what was to come.

The feline tapped at the controls adjusting the course slightly as her mind went over the things that were about to change in her life.

She would no longer be standing in front of the security/tactical control panel and she would no longer be flying a fighter; she’d be in charge of an entire star ship. As exciting as that sounded, it also had a whole lot of new responsibilities that Jackie was about to assume.

The general mood a board the shuttle seemed to be that of a relaxed company. They weren’t on any particular mission aside to get to the starbase.

“Troubled over something?? the human asked, bringing Jackie back to reality for a second.

Jackie blinked, wondering how he knew about her state of mind.

‘what is he a Betazoid?’ she thought to herself before replying

“Ah.. kind of….? Jackie admitted, thinking there was no sense in hiding her feelings if he were an empath and could read her “nothing you’d need to worry about Lt…? she paused fishing for his name.

“Lieutenant Carmen Malozzi? he replied extending his hand, Jackie tapped at the controls briefly to let the autopilot have full control before turning to Malozzi and shaking his hand as she introduced herself.

“Lieutenant Commander Jackie Clawson? she said. “Ah.. how did you…?? she started.

“Half betazoid? he smiled a little moving over a bit to take control of the shuttle for a while.

Jackie nodded.

‘Figures’ she thought to herself as she got up to get herself some coffee from the replicator, figuring she needed a break anyways.

The she-kat smiled a little as she took a seat near the Trill who smiled back.

“I’m...Lieutenant Anise Selmak? she said extending her hand as she regarded the she-kat, pondering something in her mind.

Jackie smiled, and shook the Trill’s hand.

“So ah.. you… what’s bringing you to StarBase 17?? Jackie asked.

“I’ve been transferred to the StarBase. Operations ? said Malozzi. “Can’t wait to meet the CO; there have been some talk about how he runs the base.? Malozzi replied.

Jackie nodded lightly.

“What about you??

“I ah…am on the way to pick up the USS Horizon; I’m the new Commanding Officer.? Jackie said.

The Trill looked surprised.

Jackie blinked looking at the Trill, worried it was something she said.

“Are you all right, Lieutenant?? she asked.

“Uh.. depends on what… “ the Trill paused. “I’m.. “ she did a double take, suddenly looking more serious than she was a few moments ago.

Jackie raised an eyebrow curious.

“You’re what??

The Trill shook her head a little.

“I’m…I’ve been transferred to the USS Horizon.? Anise responded. “I’m your Executive officer? Anise responded, still a bit bewildered. “Ma’am?

Jackie chuckled a little.

“And this worries you?? she asked.

“No just ah.. I mean.. wow…? the Trill said. “what are the odds…this.. this is certainly…? she trailed off for a moment. “well I’m making a complete idiot out of myself. Way to go Anise…?

Jackie smiled sympathetically. She tended to have that kind of effect on some people she knew as much.

“Don’t worry Lieutenant. This one doesn’t count? she said, smiling.

Although she was serious about her work, Jackie knew that at times you had to be laid back a little. Considering that she was about to take a huge step forward, she needed to be laid back right now.

Anise smiled a little.

“I’m.. really looking forward to this.? She said. “I’ve never been an XO before. Neither have any of my former hosts?

Jackie nodded. A joined Trill would prove useful and quite helpful as an Executive Officer.

“I’ve never been a CO before.? Jackie smiled a little. “But we all have to go out of our comfort zone at some stage.?

Anise nodded.

“I was … flying before? she admitted.

Jackie smirked at that.

“Don’t tell me you were too, Commander…? Anise said noting the feline’s grin.

“Wing Commander at the USS Rayden. As well as Chief Tactical/Security Officer? Jackie responded, fingering her mug of coffee.

“Isn’t that.. I mean .. hell I have trouble with figuring out whether I’m supposed to be an engineer, a security officer or a pilot because of my symbiont’s former hosts, but.. actually doing two jobs that don’t really mix….how did you deal with that?? Anise asked.

Jackie held up her coffee mug and smiled.

Anise had to laugh.

“That and I ran the Fighter Wing quite efficiently according to Admiral Harmon? she said. “He was the one who recommended me for this job.? She said.

Anise nodded, recounting a similar situation in her case.

“Said I need some ‘on the job’ training first.? She said “I think it’s partially because of Malek and the others.? She said.

Jackie furrowed her brow a little, then it downed on her.

“Ah.. your symbiont’s former hosts.? She nodded. “that’s definitely an advantage? she said. “Pleasure to have you as part of my crew, Lieutenant Selmak? Jackie said.

Anise smiled.

“I hope there won’t be any trouble between us.?

“Trouble between us, doubtful… trouble thrown at us, you betcha? Jackie grinned.

“Yeah Delek was kinda like that? Anise remarked. “Well so was I…until I got the Selmak symbiont? she said.

“How long have you had the symbiont??

“About 4 years now, Ma’am? Anise replied. “until then I was as reckless as they get?

Jackie smiled a little.

“Should take some time in the holodeck sometime, see who’s more reckless? she said.

“Oh that’d be neat! I am sure I wouldn’t get to fly that much on this job.?

“You and me both, Lieutenant? Jackie said “but there are always holodecks?

Anise nodded. Jackie smiled, glad that at least her Executive Officer didn’t seem the grumpy type. She found Trills a little bit weird at times, especially the joint trills, they tended to talk about their former hosts, but Jackie knew that was a small issue, the main issue was how the person worked on duty.

OFF: I tried this once before, but it ate my post:(

ON:

<USS ST. JOHN>

Jamie Dorval heaved his luggage off the turbo life outside the transporter room and sighed. He was leaving his first post... It was an emotional day to be sure. But to make Chief Engineer on the Horizon, no less! It was a tall order to be sure. He walked in to the transporter room, deep in thought.

"SURPRISE!"

The entire engineering staff was spread out around the room, all smiles. "Wow, I..." Jamie started to say.

"Now Lieutenant, don’t go getting mushy on us.? Lt. Malcolm said, beaming as he walked over to Jamie, still dumbstruck at the door. “You’ve kept this ship running shipshape for long enough, it’s about time you got one of your own. The Horizon is a good ship, she no St. John…? The crowd laughed, an Intrepid class would run circles around this old Ambassador… “But a good ship with a good Chief Engineer.? Malcolm pulled Jamie in close, grasp his shoulder and winked. “You’ll make us proud. But don’t let the Captain think it’s her ship.?

Ensign Mitchell came forward with a wrapped present in his hand. “All this time you were bunking I would have NEVER thought YOU’D get a shot at your own ship. So I was going to give you this instead. But when word came down that you were going to the Horizon… well, here.? He handed Jamie the box. Jamie was still mildly in shock, but he took the box from Sam Mitchell and opened it. He pulled out the model St. John and smiled despite himself.

“Is this what you’ve been working on this past week??

“Yeah, what’s your point? No point hanging around with you senior officers, so stiffly uppity. So I made myself useful.? Sam put the model back in the box and tucked the box in Jamie’s bag. “Do us proud Chief. And drop me a line sometime.? Sam hugged Jamie.

“Thank you all. I…?

“No speeches Lieutenant! Get on the pad, don’t you know you can’t put two Chief Engineers in one place?? He said with a smile. “Mitchell, if you would??

Mitchell smiled. “Hip hip!?

“HUR-RAY!?

“Hip hip!?

“HUR-RAY!?

“Hip hip!?

<<Starbase 17>>

As Ensign Thomas J. Matthews entered Starbase 17, the Transporter chief spoke in a friendly manner, "Welcome aboard Starbase 17, Ensign. We hope you enjoy your brief stay!" Next to him stood a female in Command uniform, with the pins on her collar signifying that she is a Commander. "Welcome aboard Starbase 17, I am Commander Weathers." She smiled and offered her hand, and shook hands with Thom. "I am here to show you to your temporary quarters. Follow me" she spoke.

As they proceeded into the corridor, Commander Weathers struck up a conversation. "So, I've been told you are the new councelor aboard the USS Horizon" she said. Thom smiled, "Oh yes, I am actually quite excited to get a chance to do the things I love - to travel to unknown places, to learn new cultures and meet new people with new and interesting concepts, and to help others live a happier, healthier life." "That sounds great!" she said, with a smile. "I sense a slight accent..." Cmdr Weathers said lightly, "are you from England?" Thom chuckled... "oh... no, South Africa! Its quite a beautiful country!" They continued with small talk for a few minutes, and finally arrived at Thom's temporary quarters. "Here it is" she said, "if you need anything, don't hesitate to contact me." She smiled. "Thank you very much for your hospitality" Thom spoke, and he proceeded into his quarters. He enjoyed the small things in life more than anything - the small talk, the common acts of kindness. These are what brightened his day, what made him a happy man.

Thom had his belongings put into storage. Considering that he would be aboard the U.S.S. Horizon relatively soon, he felt it wasn't necissary to unload everything into his quarters where he would be staying for only a short time. Although, he did have one item with him. It was a picture of his love, Kestra Morrison (whom had passed away). As he looked down at the picture, a tear fell on the glass. But this was a tear of joy, evident when he spoke "I did it Kes... I'm following our dream!" He smiled, tears running down his face, not knowing what was ahead on his adventures, but completely content in knowing that this future secured these dreams which he has held for so long.

<OFF>

I am interested in also doing portions in my in-charachter posts that are the "Councelor's Log," which I would like to use this stardate calculator if that is ok: http://blaser.tzo.com/stardates/calculate.php

So my questions are:

1) Can I use that stardate calculator to do the "Councelor's Logs"
and 2) What date should I use? Should it be parallel to today's date? (As in April 3, 2005 = April 3, 2080)

Thanks. ;-)

Dorval wander slowly around the huge station. He'd stowed his gear and was waiting to be cleared to board. Being off duty let him let his hair down, so to speak. He wasn't thinking about propulsion, (besides, stations were boring, they didn't go anywhere) or power supply... No, he was thinking about being the Chief Engineer of a new ship. How did Malcolm do it? His commands were always so... easy. Dorval hoped he could live up to it.

He'd wandered around to the stations lounge by this point. He picked up as sandwich and scanned the room. Mostly uniforms, a few Marines too. A thought struck him.

"Attention Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to make a brief announcement. I've heard a romour that a new ship is leaving port and where I'm form that calls for a celebration. A round on me for the crew of the Horizon... Even the Marines!" He gave the last part a bit of a laugh, and waited at the bar to see who came up.

ON:<SB17..temporary crew billet>

After the workout (good) and then the little contretemps with Trell (annoying but no big deal), Casey had gone back to her bunk room (spartan), and found it didn't contain a proper H20-bath and she'd had to be content with sonics (bugger).
Although it got her clean enough it just didnt have that 'lounging indolently in hot water' feel to it.
The base *did* have liquid cleansing areas, she knew, but trying to find one when she felt as if her body would give up on her if she dragged it more than 3 feet, and the idea that she might possibly smell like a dead polecat by the time she got there, wasn't that much of an incentive.
She'd changed into an old marine-issue jumpsuit, rough-dried her hair, and accessed the private terminal in her quarters. Although the room was fairly small, she didn't have to share (space wasnt a premium on a base as large as 17) and there was the added advantage of her own LCARS access and replication unit.
She had just the one message..orders.
The Horizon had apparently docked (docking ring Epsilon 12, portside), and she was now free to board.
"First things first" She muttered bringing up the ship's manifest and running her eye down the list.
CO - Clawson...female..feliniod..
Casey sat back and cocked her head to one side as she often did when thinking or trying to access her own memories. Nope..she wasn't familiar with either the name or species. Should be interesting then..she enjoyed meeting new people, especially the more exotic.
XO..nope..didnt recognise her either..nor the Flight Control Officer. Another female..and..ugh..Betazoid.
She had no prejudice against Betazoids per se, but she didn't like the idea of having her head reamed every time she was in close proximity. Casey sighed to herself..one bad experience and here she was judging people. She'd have to watch that.
Nurses..nope..never heard of em..CEO..finally a male name..so far she'd been surprised at the amount of women on the ship. That would be a refreshing change from her usual postings.
As O'Neill reached the end of the information, thanking whatever gods might be currently tuned in to the ether that the name Trell hadn't popped up, she decided that now she'd looked through the Fleeties she'd feel more comfortable checking out her fellow marines.
The name of her immediate superior gave her pause. More than pause in fact.
Her eyes widened and she muttered "No..there must be more than ONE person with that name..i couldn't be THAT unlucky..."
She double-checked the service history..something she hadn't done with any of the others.
Cruiser, Thomas...
She was wrong..had to be...this was definitely a different person; it HAD to be.
She read feverishly through the career record, looking for differences..ANY differences.
Casey was aware that she was desperately trying to convince herself when she knew damn well it was the SAME Cruiser.
Cruiser..Marine Academy.
Looking around her room, Casey grabbed hold of her service-issue boots and flung them hard against the wall.
Not satisifed she retrieved them, then threw them again..harder this time.
Cruiser.
Bloody Cruiser.
She picked up the boots once more.
Bloody (throw, retrieve, re-aim) Cruiser.

<Temporary Quarters>

Clara's quarters had not changed, in that eerie way that temporary quarters never do. It wasn't as though she expected her discarded padds to be dancing around the room when she returned, the room’s stillness was just never the comfort that regular quarters were. Coming home to a strange bed covered in all your stuff was alien, as though you <i>should</i> belong, even though you knew you didn't. Clara sighed, she was analyzing this FAR too much for it to be healthy.

She jumped as the wall computer suddenly beeped, and the mechanical voice chipped in. "Incoming message from Harriet Jaro." Just what she needed. She suddenly regretted not staying with Dena in the dining area. Somehow her mother always knew when she was home, and sometimes Clara wondered if she were partially Betazoid. She supposed it was best to simply get it over with and walked to the wall panel, taping it. The screen flashed, becoming active, and her mother appeared on screen. Her adopted mother was an average sized woman, East Indian by birth, although more often people mistook her for South American. She was beautiful, the way all 'exotic' women were, and as a teenager Clara had felt like nothing more than chopped beef standing next to her.

"Dear, you're in."

"Actually, I was just heading out." Clara lied without blinking. "Mum, what do you need?"

"Oh." She watched her adopted mother shift behind the screen and Clara felt the strings of guilt tighten around her chest. The two women had been very close when she was young, but she had always felt as though there were something that her parents were keeping from her, which had easily pushed a rift into their relationship. Then, after Clara joined Starfleet much to her parents' chagrin, their friendship had broken down to simple endurance of the other's company. "I was wondering if we could talk. You're always so busy on assignment; I thought you might have sometime now."

"I'm actually about to meet Dena for a drink."

"Dena?" Her mother appeared puzzled. "You mean your friend from the Academy?"

Clara nodded. "Yes, we've both been assigned to the same ship, the USS Horizon."

Her mother's forehead creased. "Who's the Captain?"

"Lieutenant Commander Jackie Clawson."

Harriet shook her head. "I'm not familiar with her."

"Mum, you haven't been in Starfleet for thirty years."

Her mother shrugged. "I haven't completely fallen out with many of the officers, you know."

"Right." Clara slipped her hands into the pockets of her citizen’s attire. "But mum, I really have to run."

"Alright, dear."

Clara reached to switch off the screen when her mum stopped her.

"What would you think about your father or I visiting you on your ship sometime?"

"Mum, this isn't the Enterprise, it's not a civilian ship."

"I know, but I'm sure that we could pull a few strings."

Clara sighed. Just what she needed. "Maybe. But not right away. I wouldn't want the crew to think their Chief Fight Control Officer needed to be babied."

Her mother smiled and she joined it with her own. Right answer. "Alright. I'll talk to you later."

"Bye." She flicked the screen off before her mother could get another word in. It often took her twenty minutes just to say goodbye to her mum.

Clara looked around the room in dissatisfaction. Returning to her star charts had seemed a good idea only minutes ago but now the idea of staying in the cramped space made her restless. She almost laughed at her own indecision, and then made one.

<SB17>
<Lounge>

As she entered she watched one man in a gold uniform stand up to make an announcement, "Attention Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to make a brief announcement. I've heard a rumour that a new ship is leaving port and where I'm form that calls for a celebration. A round on me for the crew of the Horizon... Even the Marines!"

Clara smiled, first at the prospect of a drink, and then at the slight jab at the marines. Her eyes traced the room for a familiar face, namely for Dena, but she was no where in sight. She must have still been in the dining car, despite her previous indication that this would be her next destination. Shrugging to herself Clara turned and headed towards the bar to cash in that drink.

Dorval watched as a Bajoran Ensign walked up out of the crowd to the bar beside him. At least there was someone here from the Horizon. “Hi, I’m Jamie Dorval, Chief of Engineering.? He said beaming.

“Ensign Clara Jaro, Chief Flight Control.? Clara extended her hand to the man, feeling slightly self-conscious about being the only one who seemed to be taking the man up on his offered drink.

“Con, eh? Well, I’m glad to meet you, although I’ll never see you on duty.? He said with a smile. “But that aside . . . well, it’s a small ship. Do you know anyone else aboard? Heard anything about the CO?? Dorval signaled a Bartender over to them as he spoke.

"I've only met the nurse, so far. Ensign Dena Nicosia. She and I were in the Academy together. Other than her, I'm pretty lost." Clara smiled. "I haven't even met the CO yet." Clara quickly ordered her drink and watched the Bartender speed away. "Although my orders said that she was 'feline'. Is that right?"

“Yeah, Felinoid . . . I’ve never seen one either, only a few have joined the fleet, I think. But a Commander is a Commander, so she must be something good, right? To be honest with you, I’m more nervous about being in the Counter-terrorist unit.? Dorval took a long pull from his drink and shook his head. “I don’t know, I just sit downstairs and make my ship go. I try not to think about those things, like where and at whom. But this ship is definitely more a warship than the St. John, my last ship.?

“Oh, I know. My previous ship, the Gallant, was nothing more than a science vessel.? Clara shook her head. “It’s certainly going to take some getting used to.? She thought for a moment, and then smiled. “Although I have to admit, I’m just itching to get behind the helm of a ship that’s designed for more than just studying nebulae.? The Bartender returned baring her drink and she nodded her thanks. She smiled to her drinking companion, motioning towards the tall flute glass. “Thank you.?

Jamie picked up his drink from the bar and raises it to her. “Don’t worry about that, I’ll keep that ship pushing 9.8 for as long as you want it. She’ll move, don’t you worry.? He took a sip in a mock toast. “So, tell me about yourself, Ensign Jaro.? Dorval asked after putting down his drink.

Clara smiled, suddenly feeling awkward at the undue attention. "That's a pretty big question." She sipped her drink, trying to find an interesting answer. She felt the way most people do about themselves, that she was one of the most uninteresting people alive and didn't particularly want to give that impression right away. "I grew up on Earth, in what was once Germany. After high school I joined Starfleet. That's where I learned how to fly and I couldn't imagine having done anything else. The last eight years I've been stationed on the Gallant." She shrugged and took another sip. "A pretty mundane history, really. What about you, Ensign Dorval?" Now it was his turn to be in the hot seat.

Dorval shook his head. “Off duty, you can call me Jamie, but on duty you should probably call me Lieutenant.? He cocked his eyebrow at her.

Clara blushed at her mistake. 'Way to go Jaro. If you were trying to make yourself look like an idiot, you succeeded.' She pushed the memory of her faux pas from her mind and smiled.

“That aside, I’ve always like messing with stuff, so I guess it was bound to happen that I’d end up an engineer. I grew up in Montreal, on Earth, mom in the fleet, dad in a bagel shop. Other than that, same as you . . . but you don’t get many Bajoran’s growing up in Germany normally, do you??

"No, I suppose that's true. I was adopted by a human couple when I was only a baby." She took a sip of her drink, feeling the synthahol tingle against her throat, despite its lack of real alcohol. "Engineering has always been a bit over my head." She awkwardly changed the subject. "I have a real respect for those of you who are good at it. Was your mother an engineer as well? Or did you find your interest for it on your own??

“It was all me. It actually started cause I’m a musician, believe it or not. Field harmonics are a lot like guitars . . . maybe that’s a bit of a stretch.? Dorval frowned at his analogy. “No, my mother was a researching scientist in New York, studying xeno-marine biology. Personally, I was more interested in the bagel making.? Jamie brought his trademarks smile back up.

“I probably would have agreed with you.? Clara smiled with the Lieutenant. “Although I never would have thought to compare music with a ship’s engines. Are you very good? A musician, that is.? She asked, expecting the typical modest response.

“Ah well, that all depends on what you mean by ‘good’.? Dorval leaned back against the bar. “I would say that I was proficient. Either way, I’m a little out of practice. I’m hoping there will be fellow musicians on board the Horizon, there wasn’t much chance to play on the St. John.? Dorval had figured that the place to find them would be the bar, if anywhere, but oh well. “What about you, any artistic tendencies??

“Nothing musical, I’m afraid.? She finished off her drink and watched the hovering Bartender quickly remove the emptied glass. “It’s a little embarrassing, but I do write holo-novels. The security chief on the Gallant and I were pretty good at them, actually. You and I are kind of in the same creative boat, I guess; I’d hoped to find someone here to team up with, too.? She smiled. “Although there don’t seem to be many other members of the crew here, so we may be in luck.?

“Publish any??

Clara laughed. “No. We tried for one right around the time that the Voyager Doctor was in court with one of the publishers and they weren’t interested in anything from Starfleet Officers. I guess they didn’t want any further trouble with Starfleet. Would I know any of your music??

“Nah, not unless you were hanging around bars in Montreal . . . or . . . well . . . when were you at the Academy? I was in a band there . . . oh, I guess it’ll be nine years ago now. It was a funky jazz quartet called Anymatter. We played off campus mostly.? Jamie got a nostalgic look in his eyes. “It was fun, but nothing published in any major sense. We made a few recordings, I’ve got some on a chip I load into the library of whatever ship I’m on, just for me, you know?? Jamie looked around and finished his drink.

Clara thought for a moment, trying to remember whether or not she had seen Jamie play. She shook her head. "I'm sorry, if I saw you play I don't remember." She smiled. "All that I can really remember from my last year is a constant state of panic over finals." She laughed. How inconsequential such things seemed now that she was out. "Dena might remember, though. She has a far better memory for such things."

“Our nurse, of course. Where is she? I’d like to meet her, as well. Do you think we’ll meet any other of our future crew mates today?? Asked more as a statement than a question. He looked around the room, and then back at Clara. He lowered his voice. “Have you ever traveled with marines before??

Clara lowered her voice, as well, shaking her head. “No. I’m a little nervous about them, actually. I’ve heard some . . . interesting rumours.? She glanced around, thankfully not noticing any green uniforms in their immediate vicinity. “Have you ever been stationed with them??

“No, but since the war, I’ve heard that they’re on most ships who have any chance of anything remotely dangerous. I’m pretty sure that most of the rumours are just that, rumours. I mean, we’re going to have to find out, aren’t we?? Jamie sighed. “Have you heard when we get to go aboard? I’m getting itchy to take a look. These are my first bio-neural gelpacks, not to mention, I just like working . . .? Jamie trailed off in thought. Casting that thought aside with a shrug, he spoke up again. “Do you have any plans for this afternoon? Have you had a chance to explore the station??

"No, to be honest I haven't seen much outside my own quarters and the dining area. Would you care to make an afternoon of it?"

“Sounds great,? Dorval said, while standing up and escorting her out of the lounge.

<Shuttle Prometheus>
<Approaching StarBase 17>

Jackie was once again at the controls of the shuttle. The Trill, Anise, was sitting next to her working the panel on the right.

Jackie shook her head lightly, what were the odds of her running into her Executive officer that way?

Carmen Malozzi was trying to strike up a conversation with the Klingon in the back. Thus far no luck. K’ral didn’t want to talk, Malozzi felt that it was because of the assignment the Klingon just received.

“Y’know…several life times to lean back on and I’m still as confused as ever about this one“ Anise noted from her spot on the right as she regarded the older female work the controls.

Jackie tapped at the controls, bringing the shuttle about and slowing it down a tad; they were due to reach SB17 within the hour.

“None of your hosts were XOs/COs? “ Jackie asked.

“If they were, they sure are hiding it from me at this stage.? Anise replied.

Jackie smirked a little.

“Maybe they want you to learn about it the hard way? she said. “I’m sure you’ll do fine? she said.

Anise smiled, they definitely seemed to have gotten off on the right foot at this stage. But one never knew what was up ahead. Anise had no idea how Jackie would react to situations whilst she was in charge, Jackie could only guess what she’d do.

“Coming up on Starbase 17.? Anise noted, “I got visual? she tapped at the controls to bring up the visual of the station.

Jackie spotted the Horizon nearly right away, Anise was close behind her.

“Beauty…? Jackie smiled, her eyes glistening with excitement at the sight. She was so mesmerized that for a moment she forgot about the shuttle’s controls until the control panel beeped for her attention.

Jackie forced herself to look down at the controls again .

‘okay…land the shuttle first, then gawk at your ship….’ She told herself.

Anise looked at Jackie with an amused grin on her lips, she could see that the feline was excited about this, so excited that she forgot what she was doing for a moment. Anise shook her head lightly and called up the starbase to check where they could dock.

“Mind if I take a little detour?? Jackie asked Carmen and the Klingon.

The Klingon just grunted; Carmen looked up.

“want to see your ship?? He asked.

“Am I that obvious?? Jackie asked

“Half Betazoid? he replied.

“I’d like to see it too..? Anise replied.

Carmen shrugged.

“Go ahead.?

Jackie made a slight course adjustment, taking the shuttle around to take a closer look at the Horizon.

The Intrepid class was an Explorer/Scout/Destroyer category primarily. Jackie didn’t mind that as much. She did like the design, and the features the Intrepid offered. She secretly hoped she would get to try her hand at the helm of the Horizon one day. Beside her Anise was having the very same thought. She’s never flown an Intrepid.

Jackie took the shuttle around just enough to see ‘USS Horizon NCC 74661 A’ stencilled on the ship up close and personal.

“We’re cleared to dock at docking port 4? Anise spoke up, breaking into Jackie’s thoughts for a moment.

“wha..? oh.. allright…? Jackie had a hard time taking her eyes off the ship.

She took the shuttle back, and docked the Prometheus at their designated port.

Anise was out of her seat, before Jackie confirmed the shuttle secured in place and all systems shut down normally.

“Wow.. easy there ladies? Carmen chuckled.

“I’ll see how you react when you get your own command? Anise said. “ or at least your own Executive Officer position? she corrected herself watching Jackie run a post-flight check, then the feline moved onto getting her things.

The group disembarked and parted ways, Anise headed towards the viewing area to take another look at the Horizon as Jackie headed to check in with the base CO and get the command codes transferred to her so she could officially take command of the Horizon.

OFF
Okay…all set me thinks.. feel free to go aboard now.

So soon as I get the command codes transferred to me (in character) we’ll start the first mission!

I have to be in a certain mood when I write these sorts of things…otherwise they come out dry and boring and bleh.. like this one did…

Mission details will be posted shortly…it has something to do with Rommies playing up again and a missing StarFleet ship.

If anyone has any sub-plots they’d like me to include, let me know so I can write it in without affecting the main plot or throwing us off track somehow.

Lt. Dorval walked beside Ens. Jaro down the wide corridor which ran along the outside of the SB17. They'd talked briefly about this and that, small talk mostly, when something caught his eye out the window.

"Look at that." He pointed to the ship's nacelle that was coming in to view around the corner. He leaned down to Clara's ear in a reverend tone, whispered: "That's her, the Horizon."

Clara gasped at the sight. "Wow." She felt the word slip from her lips as she breathed in the sight. "There's something about a ship that's just so . . ." Clara shook her head, knowing that there was no need for her to finish the sentence. Pilots and engineers both seemed to have a connection to their ship equal only to that of her CO and there was no need for her to explain it to her companion. A moment passed as both stood in an impressed silence, before two passing officers broke them from the reverie. Clara cleared her throat. “Do you think it would be alright if we went aboard?? She whispered.

"I think it would be alright,? he said hesitantly... "I really want to see it. I can't think of the harm. Lets go find the docking port." Jamie grabbed her hand and started to pull. He had a look mischief in his eye.

Clara giggled, allowing the suddenly enthused Lieutenant to pull her along towards the docking port. For the first time she noticed a gleam in his eye, which she thought he must have been famous for on his last post. He suddenly seemed almost like a little boy and Clara felt her own excitement rise because of it. "Do you know when she got in?" She could not wipe the grin from her face as they easily came across the port.

Dorval stopped at the panel, for all of a second. "Does it matter? Come on!" Dorval slowed down as he got to the airlock. Heavy doors slide apart with a ‘sh-chunk’ as the two smiling officers strolled aboard.

<USS HORIZON>

"I'm going to bet we can't get on to the bridge right now, but I'll be damned if they can keep me away from my warp core!"

Clara shrugged, disappointed at the truth behind his words, although seeing some of the ship was certainly better than seeing none of it. It would be soon enough that she would be behind the helm, she could wait. The halls of their ship were what she had expected; yet she couldn’t help but get a thrill from just being there. She smiled to Dorval and the two headed off towards the turbo-lift, she knew by just looking at him that he was jumping out of his skin to see the engine and she didn’t want to hold him back.

The turbolift door slid shut. Jamie winked at Clara. "Deck eleven, main engineering... I've been doing my homework." The lift started to move down and Dorval started to feel comfortable. It felt good to be on a ship that he could claim, at least as Chief Engineer. He brought up the LCARS in the lift and flipped through status readouts.
“I wonder where our CO is. I'm sure she'll want to get on board just as much as we do.? He mentioned idly, most of his attention on the panel in front of him.

“I’m sure that most of the crew will want to get aboard as much as we do.? Clara smiled. She watched him scan the panel before him, almost certainly reading up on the engine status and Clara suddenly felt as though she were intruding. She almost opened her mouth to take her leave, and allow him the pleasure of his engines alone, while she explored the rest of the ship, but her own curiosity about the engine room kept her quiet. The turbolift’s engines slowed and Clara turned towards the doors, as the lift pulled to a stop.

"Okay, it's 5 meters down the hall, on the left." The doors opened and it was all Jamie could do not to run. He walked quickly to the doors to main engineering. They did not open. He nearly ran in to them. He tapped the panel beside the door.

"Authorized personnel only." The computer responded.

"Oh no," He shook his head, "Your not going to beat me that easily. Computer, override lockout, authorization Dorval Three Six Juliet Alpha. Chief Engineer."

"Command and engineering codes have not been transferred to the new crew of the Horizon." Came the computers flat response. Dorval turned to Clara.

"She's taunting me."

Clara couldn’t help but smile at her companion’s comment. “Computer, which personnel do have authorization to access engineering??

“Starbase 17 engineering personnel only.? Clara shrugged.

“We could try-“ she jumped, cut off mid-sentence as the engineering doors suddenly pulled back and a bored looking SB17 crewmember walked blindly passed them. Clara grabbed Jamie’s arm and the two dashed between the closing doors.

"I knew I'd get in..." Jamie trailed off as he looked up at the beautiful magnetic constriction chamber towering over him, slowly pulsing with the power to through the ship such fantastic speeds. He walked forward, oblivious to Clara and any other personnel. He walked up to the railing in front of the reaction chamber. "You've much prettier in person." He mumbled as he looked up at the heart of the Horizon.
Suddenly he felt self-conscious, not of Ens. Jaro but of the Starbase 17 crew members who had just watched him talk to a warp engine.

Clara smiled; watching as the Lieutenant suddenly became transfixed by his engine. She glanced around the large chamber, to where several station personnel were busy working, all of whom seemed to stop to watch as Dorval whispered to the engine.
She thought this to be the best time to gracefully bow out, and leave Jamie to examine his engine room in peace. She moved up behind him and leaned close to him. “Perhaps I should leave you two alone?? She smiled, and hoped that he knew she was only teasing, and not actually making fun.

"Thanks..." He was still looking at the Warp core when Ens. Jaro left engineering. He almost didn't notice. Almost.

“Uh… Sir, this is a restricted area.? Came a squeaky crewman behind him. He sighed, smiled at the warp core, then put on his ‘senior officer’ face he’d been practicing. He turned around.

“Are you telling me this ships Chief Engineer is not authorized personnel?? He tried to keep his voice low and clear, but his brain was laughing at him.

It worked. The crewman squirmed and mumbled a “sorry sir? and found somewhere else to be. But it probably wouldn’t work next time. Dorval nodded to the work crew and made his way back off the ship, but not before another long look at the core. Sigh.

<Starbase 17>
Anise watched as Jackie took off for the Starbase’s COs office.

‘about to embark on a new adventure’ she thought, smiling.

She looked back at the ship out of the viewing port, silently wondering if it was okay to go aboard or wait until the feline sorted out all the official stuff. Anise didn’t quite have the clue as to what the official stuff that was required in order for a ship to ‘change hands’ as it were, or paws in Jackie’s case.

Anise shook her head, she’s dealt with a number of different species in her career, and in the career’s of her symbiote’s former hosts, however this was the first time she dealt first hand with a feline. She wondered how Jackie would be like whilst in command as she made her way towards the Horizon’s docking port.

‘No harm in checking the ship out now’, she thought considering the ship was at the docking port and the star base engineering teams were checking her out.

<USS Horizon>

Dorval rode the turbo lift toward the airlock between the Horizon and the base, smiling all the while.

‘An APD-01 core… bio-neural enhanced circuitry…’ The doors had been open for more then a moment when Dorval came back in to reality. He started forward for a moment, and paused.

‘What's the harm?’ he thought to himself, "Deck one.?

Then he saw a trill in a red trim heading toward the tubrolift from the air lock. "Computer, hold lift." He waited for her to join him.

Anise looked around the ship as she made her way towards the turbolift; she’s never been aboard an Intrepid class. She was so engrossed in the surroundings that she nearly ran into a man in a yellow Starfleet uniform.

“Oops..? she smiled shyly, a tad embarrassed. ‘great,, several life times to lean back on for experience and you still manage to make a stupid move…’ she thought as she walked into the turbolift. “Sorry Lieutenant.? She nodded lightly at the man. “Thanks for holding the lift.? She said.

"Not a problem, especially from a ranking officer." He waited until she was in the lift. "Computer, continue. Going up?"

“ah…bridge…? she said. “I’m Lieutenant Selmak.? She said, still not sure if she should mention her position aboard the ship. It did make her a bit uncomfortable, she wasn’t used to it yet.

"I'm Lieutenant James Dorval, soon to be Chief Engineer of the USS Horizon." He couldn't hide his huge grin as he announced his position. He stuck his hand forward to shake.

Anise shook his hand and smiled lightly.

“I’m.. sort of soon to be the Executive Officer of the USS Horizon? she said

"Sort of?" He cocked his eyebrow at her as he shook her hand.

The lift arrived at the bridge and to Jamie's surprise, the doors opened with out asking for security clearance. "Huh," he said to himself as he stared out on to the oval room.

“Well I am..? she said, more assured this time. ‘way to go for making an idiot out of yourself yet again, Anise’ she thought as she looked around the bridge from inside the turbolift.

"After you, Ma'am," He gestured for her to go first. "This is your domain, I've already seen main engineering."

“Hey neat.. “ she announced, her eye immediately settling on the helm up ahead.

She stepped outside, and onto the bridge.

It was all Jamie could do to keep himself from laughing at the 'hey neat' comment from his executive officer.

"Well, I guess that makes you my boss, then doesn't it." He left the turbo lift after her and was drifting toward the engineering console midship starboard. Watching her in addition to looking around at taking in the room, he smiled.

“Yeah.. I guess so.? She replied, looking around the bridge, she took a few steps towards the helm, then confidently walked towards it.

"I meet our conn officer... but it looks like you might want that spot more..."

“Heh.. I used to do this for a living before I got this job? she admitted, running her hand across the console, wondering how the Intrepid handled.

Now Dorval actually did chuckle. "Once a pilot..." He said softly, then out loud, "No regrets I hope. Executive officer is a big chair, I don't know if I'll see it. I'm happy down with the grease monkies myself."

“Heh.. Lantash was like that.. “ she noted.

"Lantash? Oh, you’re joined?" Dorval thought for a moment. "All of a sudden I feel very inexperienced." He walked over the engineering console and looked it over.

“I seem to have that effect on quite a lot of people, especially after I got Selmak? she said, smiling a bit shyly. “Which is.. I’m not sure if it’s better or worse than the effect I had before on people…?

"What effect did you have before?" He asked quietly, not pushing. Jamie was curious, as always, and couldn't help himself from asking despite his head saying: 'you don't need to know about the private life of your XO!'

He almost never listened to THAT voice, anyway.

Anise chuckled.

“You’ll see perhaps… if I get to fly something? she said

"Plenty of fighters and shuttles aboard. We're carrying a wing, aren't we? Speaking of which, we're carrying marines. Have you ever served with them aboard?"

Anise nodded.

“Yeah. Not a bright bunch of people some of them…? she noted.

Jamie chuckled as well.

"That’s what I've heard, but I was never sure." He wander aft to the security/tactical and ops positions. "Have you met Commander Clawson?" He asked idly, as to conceal his rabid curiosity.

“Yes she flew us to the base on the Prometheus? Anise noted, as she ran a diagnostic on the helm console just to see what that’d show up

"Oh? What's she like??

“Curious…? Anise noted. “but I’ve never worked with her species.? She noted. “I hope she’s not as temperamental as Klingons on duty?

"Me neither, not to many of them in the Fleet, I think. Do you know when we'll be officially transferred? I'd like to begin moving in, at least to that nice office in Engineering."

“Soon as Cmdr Clawson gets all the official stuff sorted out, I guess? Anise noted. “No harm in moving in now I suppose.? She added.

"Great. If you don't mind, I'm going to go grab my case, and do that." Dorval moved towards the door.

Anise nodded.

“Sure go right ahead.? She said, the Trill paused to give a low whistle at the readings she’s seen from the helm.

“Whoa…? she grinned widely. ‘neat’ she thought.

The turbolift doors were almost shut when he heard Lt. Selmak exclaim to herself. 'What ever it is, I'm sure she'll deal with it or call.' He tapped his comm badge.

"Dorval to Jaro, the bridge is open if you didn't get a chance to get up here, and apparently the helm is quite interesting. Dorval out... Computer, airlock." Dorval smiled to himself. Earlier today he was worried he wasn't going to meet any of this fellows, but so far, so good.

<USS Horizon - A>

Since leaving Dorval in engineering, Clara had happily wandered the ship alone. There were still very few people aboard, and she had seen no one since leaving engineering, allowing her to get to know the Horizon alone. She was heading towards the Flight Control Center when her comm badge beeped, and Jamie let her know that the bridge was now open.

Her pulse sped as she hurried towards the turbolift and tentatively commanded her destination. “Deck One.? After a moment, the turbolift sped off and Clara smiled to herself. Finally, a chance to get her hands on the helm, even if she weren’t able to actually use it. She quickly pulled the hair elastic from her hair, and allowed it to fall, rather awkwardly down her back. She wasn’t on duty, and it was far more comfortable.

She quickly tried to straighten it, but stopped as the doors slid open before her.

<Bridge>

“Hi.? It was all she could think to say, as Clara approached the woman.

Anise was at the helm, not able to resist the temptation of actually getting the feel of the helm control panel. She ran another set of diagnostics quite in awe of the results she’s received thus far. She almost longed to fly the Horizon.

Granted, Lantash longed to take a look at the engineering systems, and Delek wanted to take a look at the weapon systems and the security panels; other former hosts wanted to do just about anything else on the new ship, but this was Anise, the Selmak host who was a pilot since an early age.

Anise still had trouble separating the memories and feelings of her former hosts from her own since the blending several years ago, but at least she knew enough to stay on her own path and not be influenced too much by the lives and feelings from Selmak’s former hosts.

As far as Anise knew, she had her own life to live, and although she did occasionally draw from the Selmak symbiont’s experiences, Anise did make her own mistakes and judgements, or at least she hoped she did; there were times the Trill wasn’t really sure of those things.

Right now, the Trill was sitting at the helm station, her fingers flying over the controls as she ran yet another battery of diagnostics, quite satisfied with the results she was seeing thus far.

Anise was so engrossed in the readings that she’s failed to hear Clara speak up behind her.

Clara shifted as she was apparently completely ignored by the woman in front of her. A fact which was slightly annoying, despite Clara’s complete understanding of the reason. If it were she who was in front of that console, she would surely be just as oblivious to the surrounding world.

Feeling incredibly self-conscious, Ens. Jaro turned and slowly walked about the bridge, studying each station methodically, although it was that entire she could do to stop herself from rushing the trill and shoving her away from the station. Dena had said that the CO had been a pilot too, and Clara laughed out loud at the sudden image that popped into her mind of the three women, Bajoran, Trill and Feline all fighting to get behind the helm.

She finally found herself back by the helm, this time in front of the station and Clara lay her hand upon the console’s edge. If she couldn’t talk the woman out of her daze, perhaps a visual distraction would do the trick. “Hi.? She said again, smiling.

Anise looked up, startled that she failed to notice the woman before that.

“Oh.. um…. Hi there… ah.. Ensign….? Anise spoke up, finding herself back in real world again, almost wishing she could go back to the controls, but she had to remind herself this wasn’t her duty aboard this ship this time around. “Anything I can help you with?? she asked.

Clara immediately regretted knocking the woman from her work, seeing the annoyance barely hidden behind the Trill’s expression. ‘Nice work, Jaro, you’ve ticked off one of the few people who would probably understand your neurotic obsession with flight.’ Clara chided herself and dropped her hand from the console.

“I’m sorry Lieutenant. I’m the Chief Flight Control Officer and, well, I guess you can understand my eagerness to try out the helm.? Clara hoped it was enough to appease the woman. Maybe even get her to allow her a quick look at the controls.

Anise smiled a well known twinkle in her eyes, she understood Jaro’s eagerness quite well. Pilots seemed to share a certain love for their job.

“Yeah.. I’m gonna miss that particular place.? She replied almost wistfully, she stood up and waves Jaro to the seat. “I’m… Lieutenant Anise Selmak, USS Horizon’s First Officer? she said, still thinking that position sounded weird to her.

Clara smiled in relief and tried not to leap across the console into her seat. Instead she slowly made her way towards it, overly conscious of every eager step. “I’m Ens. Jaro. It’s good to meet you Lieutenant.? The seat felt right, the way few things do, and her own eyes became transfixed with the readings which were displayed before her.

She tapped the control panel to run the diagnostic again, moments later the same results came up.

Anise watched Jaro work for a while.

“These readings can’t be right!? She was saying it more to herself, as statement of awe, rather than disbelief and quickly brought up the diagnostic again, shaking her head. She could feel her nerves jumping with her own joy, first at being there, and second at the unbelievable response she was getting from the system.

“Oh?? What’s the matter?? Anise asked, wondering what problem she could’ve missed that Jaro picked up.

Clara jumped at the XO’s question and felt herself colour in embarrassment. “Maximum speed 9.975.? Clara shook her head. “I knew the Intrepids were fast but that’s . . .? she grinned, despite herself. “I never imagined.? It was all Clara could do to hold herself from giggling.

“Neat, huh?? Anise asked, smiling widely; silently relieved that there wasn’t a problem Jaro found in the systems, she was just as amazed at the readings as Anise was at first.

“Doubt the Captain would want to fly us at such speeds, though? she said ‘unless she was behind the controls most likely’ she noted silently to herself, not that Anise wouldn’t mind flying the Horizon herself at such a speed. She had to wonder about the manoeuvrability of an Intrepid.

Jaro felt a pang of disappointment at the truth of the XO’s words. “I guess not, no.? Although it certainly wouldn’t stop her from doing so in any number of simulations on the holodeck. She closed down the diagnostic window and slowly began browsing through navigation controls. “Have you ever flown an Intrepid yourself?? Clara did not look up, and she had a feeling that her’s weren’t the only eyes which were glued to the readouts. “I’d like to see how she handles.?

“Real thing? Nope… simulations, flown most ship classes that way, but nothing beats the real thing,? Anise said. “what about you?? she asked, watching the Ensign with mild curiosity.

"No . . ." Clara trailed off, watching the controls move naturally beneath her fingers. “My last ship was a science vessel, it certainly had nothing on the Horizon.? She shook her head. “Simulations are fine to tide us over, but you never know how a ship is really going to respond until you get behind her outside the holodeck.?

She cut herself off, realizing that she was rambling. “I’m certainly looking forward to taking her out.?

Anise had to smile at that, she nodded with complete understanding. Although the Trill herself made up manoeuvres and such on the holodecks and actually tested them there before implementing them in real life, she knew quite well that the simulations she ran on the holodeck can never beat the real thing.

“Yeah.. me too…I’m sure the Captain is as well? she noted.

Clara nodded. “If she’s anything like me, I wouldn’t be surprised if she took the ship out herself. Regardless of what you and I may feel on the matter.? She felt a small pang of guilt by having taken the controls away from Anise and she wondered why the Lieutenant would ever have allowed them to take her away from the position she obviously adored. “It will certainly be interesting having three pilots aboard.?

Anise nodded, her hands behind her back for the time being as she thought this over.

She took that opportunity to stand and motioned for the XO to take her place. She felt a pang of regret having done so, but knew that Anise had allowed her more time before the controls than she had to, already. A fact which Clara certainly appreciated.

“I think Commander Clawson knows what her duties are and what your duties are…considering she did a double duty on her last ship for the last several years? Anise noted. “I’m sure she understands these things?

Anise looked at Jaro as the Bajoran stood up and motioned for Anise to take the helm.

“Ensign, I believe this is your duty station.? She noted, blinking lightly wondering if she just said that. ‘wow.. was that ever hard’ she noted to herself. “as much as I’d like to take the helm, maybe another time? she smiled. “this is your responsibility. I have my own responsibilities aboard this ship? she noted. ‘besides I think I got enough confusion as it is’ she noted to herself. Sometimes being blended wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.

Jaro blushed at her apparent mistake. “We aren’t on duty yet, I thought perhaps you would like to take another look before your other responsibilities make it impossible.? She smiled, hoping that she wasn’t being too forward with her XO.

“I would also like to take a look at the Flight Control Center before dinner. Besides, when we do get moving, I don’t think that a dozen Klingons would be able to wrestle the controls away from me.? She wasn’t sure who she was trying to justify the move to, the XO, or herself.

Anise chuckled.

“Yeah I would like to see the ship myself.? She noted. ‘hate to be lost in here’ she noted to herself ‘especially in my position…’

“Would you care to accompany my, Lieutenant?? Clara asked, feeling a little awkward asking her superior along, but they obviously had something in common.

Anise nodded lightly.

“Sure…I know where I’ll be spending most of my time at.? She said motioning at the bridge. “but never hurts to see the entire ship, especially before we get on with chasing weirdos and looking for new things and ….? She paused. ‘nice going Anise…’ she mentally slapped herself. “explore new worlds and civilizations…? she added.

Clara smiled at the XO's joke before motioning towards the turbolift. She took one last look at her station, but took comfort in the knowledge that she would be returning soon.

“Which areas have you seen, so far, Lieutenant??

“Bridge…? Anise shrugged lightly, as she walked towards the turbolift. “I just got to Starbase 17 a little while ago? she noted.

<<Shuttle Eisenhorn>>

“Ugly? he muttered “damn damn ugly? Jefferson cursed beneath his breath as he looked out of the shuttle main window.

“Ugly sir?? replied the shuttles pilot “I would give my left leg to fly one of those?

A pang of pain shot down Jefferson’s leg as the young pilot spoke; he didn’t know why it had been doing it since he left earth. As a stubborn man Jeffery usually went out of his way to avoid the things he didn’t like, doctors and nurses were high on his list of dislikes. Before leaving earth he had been forced to submit to a medical, some such rule about checking recently discharged officers and crew persons. Despite the pains in his leg Jefferson would be damned before he would walk in to the Horizons sickbay.

“That son? he said emphasising his age “is an ugly ship? Jeffery let his words sink in a little before continuing “the Constitution class may not be the best looking ship in the fleet but its got a soul? he smiled “a Galaxy class Starship has soul, beauty and elegance all in one package? Jeffery smiled more, a warm feeling exploded deep inside him. It was almost as if he was remembering something good about being on a Galaxy Class ship. As always what ever memory he held was still just beyond reach, his smile slowly faded from his face to be replaced by a grim look of silent despair.

He pointed out of the window “That is just a soulless monstrosity of a ship? he patted the young pilot once on the shoulder before heading in to pick up his belongings.

<Observation Lounge – SB17>

“Its still damn ugly? he said loud enough for the room to hear “Why the hell am I going to be serving drinks on such an ugly ship?? Jeffery stomped about the observation lounge for a few minutes, feeling more and more irate with each step. He didn’t know exactly what was bothering him, not for the first time he felt something sat in his mind just beyond his reach. Memories of events that had changed his life, memories of people who had influenced his life.

Each and every one of them was tantalisingly close – yet far beyond his reach.

He slammed his fist down on the bar out of sheer frustration.

“Hey stop that!? Yelled the Ferengi Barkeep, “Unless you wanna pay the damages? he added with a toothy grin?

“No I don’t? grunted Jefferson as he looked up “But I will take 2 crates of that ale from you? he said with a grin of his own.

The Ferengi looked down and bared his teeth once more “I’m sure we can come to some arrangement? he said.

<20 minutes later>

Jefferson handed over 20 bars of gold pressed latinum “20 now? he said as he handed the bars over “and a further 20 when the crates are delivered.

“It’s a pleasure doing business with you? hissed the Ferengi; perhaps we can do more in the future.

“Maybe so? Said Jefferson with a wry smile, he turned and looked out of the view port once more before saying “It’s still a bloody ugly ship.

Ookay.. some light readin’ for ya people…post contains some very important data, so read it through please.. ;)

ON
<Star Base 17>

Jackie headed to check in with the base CO and get the command codes transferred to her so she could officially take command of the Horizon. Then came the first mission assignment, and then came a whole new stage of her career come to think of it.

Jackie wondered what her crew would be like. She’s only met the Executive Officer, and the Trill seemed rather nice so far.

Jackie paused briefly, looking out through the viewer and into the deep space beyond as she got hit by several thoughts at once. Here she was, at the rank of Lieutenant Commander; Jackie Clawson was about to assume command of one of the starships in Starfleet.

The feline blinked, looking out in space.

‘yeah.. it’s real’ she noted to herself, ‘you’ve seen the ship. Harmon wasn’t kidding’ she thought. ‘and you can’t really go back now, even if you wanted’ she told herself.

She took in a few breaths, regaining control of herself mentally. She wasn’t going to freak out, she was going to keep a cool head on her shoulders, just like she’s done with her fighter Wing and with her security department back on the Rayden.

Yes, this was different, but at the same time this was still the same thing, only more responsibility and one hell of a step up in someone’s career, not to mention one hell of a job shift.

Jackie tapped at the clear viewer screen with a claw, making a lightly dull ‘thunk’ sound against the panel as she touched it.

“all right Clawson… MOVE? she muttered to herself as she pushed herself away from the viewer.

Jackie tugged at her uniform and made her way towards the base commander’s office to open up a new chapter of her career.

‘let’s see..’ Jackie had to refer to her PADD for details. ‘Commander Chris Cross’ she read the name of the person she was supposed to look for.

Jackie rang the chime outside of the base commander’s office and waited to be let in.

"Come". The voice of the man inside bellowed over the comm as Jackie walked calmly in. The chair was facing away from her and the man waited for her to speak.

Jackie looked on briefly, before speaking in calm and collected tone which carried a note of assurance in her voice.

“I’m Lieutenant Commander Clawson, USS Horizon’s Commanding Officer? Jackie stated.

"The Horizon’s new commanding officer, aye." The voice sounded curious. "I see that Admiral.." A slight pause came from behind the chair as the beeps of a PADD were heard. ".. Admiral Harmon has placed you for this command." A long humm sound proceeded the words from the man. "I’ve seen your record, Lt. Commander. Do you have any questions before you take command?"

“No Sir.? Jackie replied, quite curious as to why he was not facing her. “Not at the moment, Commander Cross?? she guessed. “ I ah.. went over the specs and preliminary crew compliment prior to departing the Rayden? she said.

The man slowly turns round in the chair. If the walls had photographic capacity, the look on Lt. Commander Clawson’s face was a picture they would hang up in the bar forever. "I’m no commander!" Rear Admiral Burton stood from the desk, placing the PADD on the table.

Jackie did a double take of the Admiral, letting out a silent gasp as realisation hit her.

“Oh.. Um.. Sorry Sir.. Admiral Burton. Sir. ? She put herself at even more attention than she was when she entered the office. She had no idea that the Task Force CO would be aboard, or that she’d meet him like this the first time.

“I was under the impression that Commander Chris Cross would be at the base? she said in a somewhat quicker tone than she was used to talking in normally, yet she managed to keep her cool enough not to stutter.

‘well that’s a bright start to your new career, Jackie’ she mentally slugged herself as she flustered and killed the blush of embarrassment that threatened to spread over her face before it did so.

"Its OK. You weren’t to know Commander Cross is in the field. So, I take it you are eager to get her out?" Martin sat on the corner of the desk, one foot on the floor and his arms folded, smiling.

Jackie nodded, mentally breathing a sigh of relief at Burton’s reaction.

“Yes Sir. Very much so, Admiral.? She admitted her hands behind her back as she regarded the Admiral. As much as a chance of a command was a step forward, Jackie still felt the love for the job that she did every day.

"Excellent." Martin handed her a PADD on his desk. It contained her first orders along with command codes for the computer. "Right, to make our lives simpler, I’ve placed the ECH in command. He will transfer command to you when you arrive on the bridge."

Jackie nodded, taking the PADD.

“Thank You Admiral? she said, nodding curtly; the feline allowed herself a small smile towards the Admiral. “I ah…look forward to working with the Task Force.? She said.

"We look forward to working with you, Jackie. I’ve heard some great things about you." Martin moved off the desk and walked up to Jackie. He smiled again, extending his hand to her.

“I ah.. thank you Sir.? Jackie murmured, flustering a little, wondering what Harmon has told Burton about her. She reached out to shake his offered extended hand.

Martin shakes the hand. He hadn't shook a felines paw before and was a little nervous to begin with. It wasn’t so bad, and as its his job to welcome new commanding officers to the big chair, his nervousness had no meaning. "I was wondering if I could ask you a favour, Jackie?"

Jackie nodded, “Anytime Admiral? she said “what can I do for you?? she asked, not letting on that she could sense his nervousness as he shook her paw. She was quite used to the reaction and could hardly pay too much attention to this at this stage.

"A tour. Ages since I’ve been on on an Intrepid Class." Martin looked to Jackie.

Jackie smiled.

“Of Course, Sir.? She replied. “Just name the time.? She said.

"Well, its up to you, obviously."

Jackie nodded. ‘duh Jackie.. You’re the CO, twit’ she thought to herself

“Right now would be a good time. I was going to go aboard after this meeting anyway? she noted.

"Sure! Why not." Martin grabbed a PADD from the table and smiled broadly. He moved towards the door and waited for Jackie.

Jackie followed suit. She had managed to relax a little, but was still keeping up her on-duty aura of character that she had whilst aboard the Rayden.

When on duty, Jackie Clawson was focused on her job and refused to get sidetracked from her task at hand, which sometimes made her look a little too stiff to those around her.

“I know that several of my crew are already aboard and some others are still enroute to the base.? She said, glancing briefly at the PADD Martin gave her as she followed him outside and headed towards the docking bay where the Horizon was docked.

<USS Horizon>

Jackie had taken Burton through the Horizon, fighting hard to stay professional herself and not to yelp out in sheer glee at what she herself saw as she guided the Admiral through the ship. She’s seen the schematics, and the holograms of the interior of the ship, but nothing beat seeing it all in front of you right there.

There was just one last leg left of their tour – the Bridge.

Jackie motioned the admiral towards the turbolift at the end of the hall on Deck 2.

“Bridge? she said once they were aboard.

The Turbolift complied and began it’s short descend down to the first deck of the ship.

Jackie looked askance at the Admiral, before asking her next question.

“Sir, have you ever had an Intrepid under your command?? she asked.

So far, Martin was rather impressed. As he said earlier, it had been a while since he had been on an Intrepid Class, that last time being the USS Michealangelo for about ten minutes during a briefing with the CO.

Jackie had asked a simple question. "No. I started my career on an Oberth Science Vessel, then an Ambassador Class, Miranda Class, Constellation and then finally a Galaxy Class. I’m happy with the Detroit, actually."

Jackie nodded, smiling a little. Before she could form a reply, the turbolift had arrived by the time Martin had finished. The doors opened and a stare met them. It was the ECH.

“Admiral Burton.. Cmdr….State your business on the bridge…? he commented curtly.

Jackie looked briefly at the Admiral, who shrugged lightly, this was her ship.

“Lieutenant Commander Jackie Clawson, Ship’s CO? she announced, giving him a look.

The ECH took a step back to let them out onto the bridge.

“Ah.. Commander… of course…..? he murmured, recognizing her from his data banks. “Apologies… damn starbase engineers took me offline for several hours and may have forgotten to put something back in…?

‘Do I wanna know?’ Jackie asked herself as she glanced at the ECH. ‘this’ll be fun…’ she noted to herself

Martin looked to the ECH. 'State your busines? Who the hell does he think he is!' Martin thought for a minute.

He looked around as Jackie introduced herself. His eyes moved round the room and recentred just as the ECH slipped out the way. "Computer, deactivate the ECH." The ECH nodded as he vanished into thin air.

Jackie blinked as the ECH disappeared. ‘okay this is going to be a little disconcerting at first’ she thought.

"Well, commander, lets get this sorted." Martin turned away from Jackie and stared into the viewer. "Computer, transfer command of USS Horizon to Lt. Commander Jackie Clawson, authorisation Burton Two Two Nine Alpha Bravo Five." A few seconds passed and the computer beeped.

"USS Horizon now under the command of Lt. Commander Jackie Clawson." The computer’s voice never changed no matter where Martin was. Engineers said it did and that each computer was different in certain ways, but Martin could never tell the difference. He turned back to Jackie and smiled.

Jackie’s ears flickered as she heard those words spoken; she felt her heart jump a little. She definitely could not turn back now even if she wanted to. This was the final step into the Commanding Officer’s shoes.

“Thank You Admiral Burton.? She nodded lightly bowing her head as a note of thanks.

She looked around the bridge, her eyes settling on the helm, as much as she wanted to fly, the words spoken by the computer several moments ago changed the cards a little.

Jackie looked towards her ready room; there was still a matter of her first mission, and meeting the crew later on. Or meeting the crew, then heading out on their first mission, rather.

“Admiral…? she trailed off a little, wondering if it was too soon to start getting to ‘business’ “I ah.. I think that about covers our.. tour, unless there is anything else you would like to see? she said, keeping her tone levelled.

Martin smiled her way. "I’m done with the tour. Let me give you some background." Martin moved round to the Tactical station and propped himself up.

Jackie turned to face him, her paws behind her back as she turned her full attention to the Admiral.

"Task Force 17 is a counter terrorism force. We focus on bringing terrorists in to justice. Now, our primary focus is the exploration of space, as with any Star Fleet ship, but if a terrorist situation comes about, TF17 ships are the only ones equipped and trained to deal with it."

Jackie nodded, focusing her attention on Burton. She was now all-alert in her full on-duty mode. When there was business to be talked about, she was fully at attention.

"Our ships are equipped with all the latest technology. Medical, Tactical, Propulsion. Everything is top of the line. Although we work for Star Fleet, we don’t actually report to them. We report directly to the President of the UFP. It gives us some leeway on the type of things we can and can't do. For example, on the orders of the President, we can break General Order 7." Martin looked at Jackie.

Jackie nodded curtly, taking all that information in. General Order Seven clearly stated ‘No Starfleet vessel shall visit the planet Talos IV under any circumstances, emergency or otherwise. This order supersedes General Order 6. Any transgression of this general order shall be punishable by death.’

She’s done some research prior to coming over to Sb17, however hearing it from the TF17s CO himself was something else. It added more information that was available on the systems.

"Everything that comes to our attention, terrorist wise, is on an Alpha Priority. However, it’s pretty quiet right now."

Jackie nodded.

“Quiet before the storm…? she remarked lightly.

"Star Fleet has asked for the Horizon to attend the Neutral Zone. The USS Einstein went missing while on a routine geological survey of Bareth Two. We’ve received word that the Romulans are moving into the area for their own surveys for some reason. I’ve told them you will depart as soon as possible." Martin sighed. "There is another reason I want the Horizon to attend. The Einstein was carrying a Genesis Device."

Jackie waited for him to go on, her eyes narrow.

"If the Romulans have got a hold of it, I fear the worst. Your job is to find the Einstein, retrieve the device and destroy it. The Federation Council doesn’t want anything further to do with Genesis. Hell, its even giving me a headache now."

Jackie nodded once again, letting out a mild growl. She didn’t like Romuland that much, and was starting to get a headache herself now. Maybe it was all the excitement or lack of coffee or the fact that the Romulans were at it again, she suspected it could’ve been all of the above.

“Would you like something to drink in my ready room, perhaps?? she asked gesturing with a PADD he’d given her in his officer at her ready room.

"Sure. Never tasted an Intrepid Class replicated coffee." Martin laughed a little as he followed Jackie to the ready room.

As they entered, Martin looked around. It was certainly spacious. Lacking personal effects right now, but spacious. "Very nice. Larger than mine on the Detroit! I know what I’m having next."

Jackie smiled lightly; she motioned for the Admiral to take a seat.

“Definitely bigger than any quarters I’ve had before…? she noted as she made her way to the replicator. “How would you like your coffee?? she asked, bringing the replicator online with a motion.

"Black, two sugars, please." Martin sat down on the cream coloured sofa along the wall. The glass coffee table was in the middle of the section. He leant back and crossed his legs, placing his right hand across his chin.

Jackie nodded, keying in the order. She keyed in an extra strong raktajino for herself. The replicator hummed replicating the drinks. Jackie picked up the two cups and moved to join the Admiral handing over his cup to him.

“Wow you can easily run laps in here during the off duty hours? The feline noted. Not that she was the type to be off duty that much.

Martin laughed. He could just see her running laps actually. He calmed down and placed the cup on the table.

"So, when can you expect to be ready?" He asked, intensively.

“As soon as my crew is aboard and we have clearance to launch? She noted curtly. “I’ll see that we are ready as quickly as possible.? She said, noting that this really wasn’t that much different to when she was the Wing Commander on the Rayden.

Over there she was given a mission, it was up to her to get her fighters briefed and ready and to go out with them to handle the situation. This was just on a slightly different scale of things.

"Excellent." Martin took the cup back off the table sipped it. "Ahh, lovely." He smiled. It wasn't the worst he'd tasted, but it is one of the best. "You know, commander, I would have been nervous as heck if I was in your position. You seem to have handled me quite calmly."

Jackie smiled lightly blushing a little at the words. She took a sip of her raktajino before replying. She was nervous, but she hid it quite well by focusing on her duty instead above all else

“I suppose…I uh…well I doubt I handled myself quite well in your office, Sir.? She noted

"You weren't to know I was there." Martin began to drink the coffee. He liked it hot. He'd gulped down half the cup by the time he spoke again. "I honestly think you'll go far here, commander. I'll be keeping an eye on you." Martin chuckled a little.

“Thank you, Admiral? Jackie nodded, taking a swig of her drink. Harmon seemed to think she’d go far as well, but she wasn’t sure herself, just yet. Only time would show. “I’ll try not to disappoint you. You’re welcome to drop by the Horizon any time you wish?

"Actually. I'd like to discuss placing someone on board."

“Oh?? Jackie cocked her head curiously. “Who would that be?? Jackie asked, focusing on the Admiral.

"Lt. Adam Kao. He’s currently assigned to the Detroit as the Asst. Chief Security Officer. He can go far if he gets the right job. And I believe he can do it here. You don't have a security chief, and I can’t think of anyone better."

Jackie nodded, thinking the offer over.

“I would like to see his record? she said.

"Of course." Martin finishes his coffee and moves over to the panel on the CO's desk. "Computer, access files reference Lt. Adam Kao, Asst. Chief Security Officer, USS Detroit."

Jackie followed Martin over to her desk and looked at the screen as it flashed with Archie’s service record. It was practically unblemished.

"He’s had his share of terrorist engagements and was part of the original team who spotted the former Rear Admiral Rico’s attempt to blow the Detroit up." Martin noted.

Jackie nodded, reading over the record.

“Interesting…? she noted. “Can’t say I’ve dealt with Admirals trying to blow up their own ships as a Security chief, but…? she trailed off.

Romulans, Cardassians, Klingons, the list went on and on. She’s dealt with a bunch of them all as a fighter pilot and a security chief. ‘you know…maybe this is actually an easier job than pulling in a double duty…’ she noted to herself.

“yeah… all right..? she nodded. “have him transferred aboard the Horizon.? She spoke as if issuing an order, and then she paused remembering who she was talking to. “When you can, Sir.? She added.

‘Jackie!’ she mentally slugged herself ‘what’s wrong with you?’ she asked herself.

Martin laughed. "Yes Ma’am!" He loved it when people forget who he is. He doesn’t mind as much as some admirals do. At the end of the day, they are all part of a team. "I'll have him transferred in the next hour."

Jackie had to smile at that. Burton seemed to be quite easy going when it came to things like that. Jackie had to be thankful for that, thus far she made two slip ups, that could’ve gone badly if he wasn’t so easy going.

She nodded, tugging lightly at her collar.

“I … hope the Detroit will be all right without Lt. Kao.? She noted. “Wouldn’t want to leave you without a good officer.? She remarked.

"Oh yes. I’ve already got someone in line to replace Mr. Kao." Martin admired the consideration.

From what he’s seen today, Jackie is well rounded, considerate, firm, but prone to a couple of mistakes. However, we all make mistakes, and Martin was very happy to have her on the command team.

"If there is nothing else, commander, I'll take my leave of you now. I'll send Mr. Kao to you as soon as he’s ready to come aboard."

Jackie nodded.

“Very well, Admiral? she said. “You’re welcome to drop by the Horizon anytime you wish, Sir. Whatever the nature of your visit might be? She said.

"I might just do that, commander." He extends his hand again. "Safe journey to you and your crew, and I'll be in touch. Thank you for your hospitality."

Jackie reached out to shake his hand.

“Thank You, Sir. And you’re quite welcome? she said as she shook his hand. “Allow me to escort you back to the base if you wish.?

"Of course"

Jackie stood up and they both headed out of her ready room and onto the bridge and into the turbolift.

So far things were going smoothly, but Jackie refused to drop her guard down even if she felt she could relax around Burton a little. She’s already made two slip ups around him, that would likely get her reprimanded were Burton someone else.

She pencilled her slip ups up to the excitement of getting her own command, however well hidden she’d kept that. Years of doing what she did for a living, Jackie pretty much got it down so well that she was able to cover up her true feelings about a situation so as not to let it show on the outside. They’d have to get to her very hard in order for her to show how she really felt about something.

A growl was as far as she went with the Romulans after a few skirmishes with them several years back. Now it looks like she’d have a run in with them yet again. Jackie wasn’t sure whether to be thrilled about the idea or to run screaming. This time she wasn’t in charge of an away team, she was in charge of an entire ship. If she made a mistake this time, the consequences would be far direr than they were last time.

For now Jackie pushed that thought away. She walked with the Admiral down to his office concentrating on mostly idle chatter relating to Starfleet issues.

Martin promised he’d send Kao over to the Horizon within the hour and the two parted ways. Jackie made her way back to the Horizon, pondering the information she received from Burton.

<Transporter Room>

Dorval stuck his head in to the transporter room and looked around. He was in luck; a crewman was reading the display. He smiled to himself, and then put on his ‘Lieutenant’ face.

“Good afternoon crewmen, I need to run a test.? He walked over to the control panel and began targeting.

“Sir??

“Go about your business, this will only take a second.?

“Yessir.? The crewmen went back to the display he was working with. Jamie smiled to himself. He targeted the two cases in his temporary quarters on the station and transported one to his office and the other two his new quarters, deck two. ‘Why do the senior officers always have to be so far from engineering?’ he pondered to himself.

“Thank you crewmen, carry on.? He left the transporter room with a smug look on his face.

<Chief Engineers Office>

The case was open on the floor. Jamie was arranging tools in a box and humming happily to himself.

“Computer, who is the chief engineer of the USS Horizon??

“The chief engineer of the USS Horizon is Lieutenant, James Dorval.?

“I’ll never get tired of that.? He said to himself. “Computer, how many of the Horizon’s engineering department are aboard??

“Of the assigned 9 officers and 27 crewmen, 5 officers and 20 crewmen are aboard.?

“Very, send a department message. ‘USS Horizon Engineering department, there will be a department meeting twenty-one hundred hours tonight in the Chief Engineers office.’ End message.?

“Message delivered.?

‘Good’ “Computer, who is currently in command of the USS Horizon?? He asked as he hung his Academy diploma on the wall.

“Command was transferred to Lieutenant Commander Jackie Clawson at eleven hundred twenty six hours today.?

‘So she’s here…’ Jamie thought to himself. He sat down at his desk and brought of the records of his engineering crew and began arranging crew shifts.

<2045 hours>

Jamie pulled the bottle from the bottom of the case and carried it over to the replicator. “Computer, 36, one ounce shot glasses with the ships insignia on it, create in two steps.? He put the bottle on the table, and got the two trays out of the replicator. He began to pour.

<2100 hours>

The engineering crew (or at least ones present, all the crewmen had arrived but he was still missing a few officers) stood in front of him, standing around the warp core. Each held a shot class full of Tequila. Jamie held his up and smiled. He’d been rehearsing this for a few hours now.

“Ladies and gentlemen, you and I are responsible for keeping this lady running smooth and fast. She’s top of the line, and you know what that means… She’s full of her self and temperamental.? He paused for the short laugh. “But, you all will treat her with respect, and hopefully she’ll return it. To the Horizon, Ship and Crew!?

“Cheers!? Called back the crew. Jamie shot back the tequila and shook his head, smiling with the burning in his throat. ‘I love the real stuff.’

“Alright, down to business, I’ve posted the shift rotations and positions. If anyone has anything to discuss, come to me and we’ll chat about it. My assistant chief isn’t aboard yet, so bring everything to me for now. Also, read up on Bio Neural Gel packs, because I bet most of you didn’t take Biology much past high school. Unless there’s anything else, you’re dismissed.? He waved them off and watched them begin to file out. ‘Alright Jamie, fun’s over, time to get to work.’

"Dammit!" The voice shouted as the cylindrical object him him square on the nose. "Im getting sick of this, Adam! You're pernamently beating me!" Mark Keoda looked at Adam as he smiled. Wiping the sweat off his brow withis towel, Adam shrugged. Velocity was about skill, reflexes and of course, aim. Adam had beat Mark too many times to remember, and every time, Mark got more angrier. His game was off form again today, even more so than usual, and Adam was a bit concerned. Mark moved over to the bench and grabbed his towel.

"So, whats wrong, Mark?" Adam asked the Startegic Operation Officer. "You're not exactly playing on form."

"Just got loads on my mind." Mark patted his brow with the towel. "Like Rico and Munro and where they're gonna strike next."

Adam just nodded. Holstering his phaser, he moved towards the door. The comm went and the admirals voice came over. Echoing throughout the Detroit, the admiral ordered Lt. Adam Kao to his ready room. Mark looked at Adam in a sort of 'Dum dum dah' way. Adam threw the towel at Mark and chuckled. Walking out, Mark threw it back, but missed and hit the wall. A chuckle could be heard from Mark as the door closes.

== Ready Room, Detroit ==

Adam straightened his fresh unifor and chimed the door. He looked around the bridge a little, smiling to people. An order to come came from the door and Adam walked in. Martin sat at the desk and looked up, smiling.

"Hello Adam." Martin motioned for Kao to take a seat. "Hows things?"

"Yeah, not bad, sir." Adam liked to keep it professional unless asked otherwise. Martin and Adam had known each other from the academy, where Martin taught him Security Tactics. He took a seat at the other side of the table.

"Adam, we've known each other for five years now. You know to call me Martin." That was the cue Adam wanted. "Anyway, Ive found you the position you want. Im transferring you to the Horizon as Chief Security Officer."

"With all due respect, Martin," Adam looked at Mrtin a little concerned, "I want to stay on the Detroit. I'm happy here."

"I know how you feel. I'm sorry though, Adam. You're ambitious and need to be let off the leash you have here on the Detroit. Its for the best. Heck, Im not going to transfer Lt. Commander Cole anytime soon, so you are going to be stuck as an Asst. Security Chief for a while if you stay. At least on the Horizon you can have a position I know you want, and I know you can handle it."

"You dont seem to understand though." Adam got up and began pacing the rrom a little. "I'm just happy here."

"Are you really, Adam?"

"What do you mean?" Adam stopped and leant on the highback spin chair.

"Well, lets see. In the last few months you have put three people in the medical bay after sparring, you've nearly killed yourself on that martial arts program you created on the holodeck. This is the flagship of SFCTU. It doesnt look good if you kill everyone before the terrorists get a chance, does it?"

"Air, are you ordering me to go?"

"If I have to."

"FINE!" Adam shoved himself off the back of the chair and stormed out the office. Martin got up but sighed as the doors closed. Adam has a temper sometimes, but he knows to keep it in check.

== Adams Quarters - 50 Minutes Later ==

Adam took the last photo off his table. He looked at it for a few moment and sighed. 'Dammit Alex, why did you turn? Why?' He asked himself that question everyday, hoping to find at least some kind of logical reasoning. He placed the photo in his bag and made his way to the door. The chime rang as he got there. "Come in." He said.

"Adam, you coming fo...." Mark entered and looked around blankly before laying his eyes on Adam. "Where you going?" Mark had a phaser holstered and one in his hand, obviously wanting to have another Velocity match. "Whats going on?"

"Im being re-assigned."

"What? Why?"

"To further my career, apparently. Martin ordered it."

"Man, thats screwed up. Want me to talk to him?"

"What can you do, Mark?" Adam didnt sound too thrilled at that suggestion. "You're a Lt. Junior Grade, assigned to StratOps. Hes a Rear Admiral, assigned fourteen ships! I mean, honestly Mark, get your head screwed on right."

"Fair enough." Mark extended his hand. "Stay in touch, yeah?"

"Sure." Adam grunted as he moved past Mark heading for Starbase 17.

After some personal time to sort out my own life, I HAVE RETURNED! W00!

<ON>
<<Starbase 17>>

Ensign Thomas J. Matthews had spent a few nights aboard Starbase 17, and surprisingly was not restless. He simply read, wrote in a diary, and meditated. From time to time, he would enter the holodeck aboard Starbase 17 to play a game of football (or as some call it, "soccer"). He often loved to play as a member of the South African team from the 2028 World Cup, the year they won against Brazil. This time, he made the winning goal!

After leaving the holodeck, Thom was greeted by a member of the Starbase 17 crew. "Boarding of the U.S.S. Horizon begins at 14:00 hours, counselor." "Thank you!" Thom said with a smile, and proceeded to his quarters. As he arrived, he was greeted by a cadet whom was newly added as a part of the Starbase 17 crew. "I have been ordered to help you gather your personal items to board the Horizon." he said with a grin. "It is greatly appreciated!" Thom replied.

After a brief time packing his personal items with the Cadet, Thom stood and watched as his bags were beamed over to the Horizon. A sense of excitement filled Thom as he was prepared to begin this new pathway in life - his new journey into the unknown. "You're next" the Ensign said to Ensign Matthews. Thom stood where his bags once sat, and was beamed over to his new home.

<<U.S.S. Horizon - A>>

Thom watched as his vision went from slightly blurred back to normal, and he was now aboard the U.S.S. Horizon. "Would you like me to show you to your quarters?" the young woman said, standing in front of him. "No thank you!" Thom replied, with happiness. "I'll explore a bit." And with this, thom walked into the corridor, aboard his new home.

Hope that was satisfactory... I feel a little rusty with everything that has gone on, considering I've been gone for a bit ;-)

ON:<SB17 and beyond>

After 20 minutes or so of boot-throwing therapy, Casey was starting to feel less like she would strangle anyone by accident and that she was therefore relatively calm enough to pack her grip (including the very abused service issue footwear), and make her way to the new posting.
She'd taken a quick look at the Station site map a day or so before, and didnt feel the need to check her bearings as she exited the temprory bilet and made her way towards the docking rings.
O'Neill had an excellent sense of direction, and even her fading temper tantrum wasn't enough to skew it badly enough to get lost.

<Docking Ring>
Her journey was uneventful. The Security detail at the gate just waved her through after checking her ID and one pointed vaguely in the direction of the Hub where the Horizon-A was moored. She nodded sharply and walked along the viewing platform corridors..taking a moment to stare at the vast sleek shape of her new home.
Intrepid class.
13 type 9 phaser arrays, 4 torpedo lauchers, Ablative armor, MLSS and a klingon cloak.
Nice.
Shame it didnt carry more firepower but it wasn't a Marine ship per se.
And it only had 2 fighters and 4 runabouts. No drop ships.
At least this Task Force was pro-active on the terrorism front. Tehy weren't like some of the pansy-assed liberals in the Federation who took exception to her profession, saying it was not conducsive to a group based on exploration and knowledge.
She'd like to see what they thought if THEIR lives were in danger from hostiles and they had no-one to defend their six.
She made her way up the ramp to the airlock where ship's security were awaiting the new crew.
The only fly in her ointment right now was the fact her MCO was that bloody man.
Her fingers twitched around the handle of her grip bag and she suppressed a sudden irrational urge to start flinging footwear once more.
"Something amiss 2nd lt?" The security officer gave her a curious look.
Casey gave hm a wry smile and shook her head, her red hair with its odd white streak at the front falling into her eyes as it often did.
"Just thinking..guess I should sort my thoughts out before I get on board.." She smiled, elicting a retrun response from the other, "Especially as you've a Betazoid on board."
"Ma'am?" He looked puzzled, "Begging your pardon but we've no Betazoids on the ship, not that I'm aware of." He scanned the PADD in his hand, "We've got a Bajoran Officer...the FCO, but no Betazoids."
Casey closed her eyes briefly and swore silently to herself. She'd read through the crew list too quickly and misread an entry. And her subsequent annoyance at finding that..HE..was going to be her Marine CO had put the plan to go through the details more thoroughly later, right out of her head.

'Sloppy work, soldier' she thought to herself crossly; she'd misread information and made an assumption. Something her drill sargent had once told her 'Look Case..it doesn't make an ASS out of U and ME..it just makes one out of YOU..I'm fine..You're the one who'll look like a rookie...that's if it doesn't get you killed"

"My mistake, Ensign. Now..tell me has the MCO come aboard yet?"
Another scan down the PADD-list and a shake of the head. "No Ma'am..the CO is aboard though and CEO, ship's counselor, XO..Expecting more in the next few hours." He glanced up, "Virtually all the marines are billeted ma'am."
She smiled to herself..marines were always punctual..that and the fact they knew that the last men in would get barrell scrapings as far as bunk rooms went.
The security man in front of her took another PADD from inside a box at his feet and handed it across, explaining it contained directions to 'Marine country' and her own bunk room.
Nodding her thanks she entered the ship...

<Dorval’s Quarters>

Dorval arrived in his quarters for the first time, after spending his first day aboard in his office in main engineering.

“Computer, lights, begin personal log, audio only.? The lights came up in the room. Dorval took the remained of the tequila bottle and put in on a shelf. He began unpacking the case he’d beamed aboard while he spoke to the computer. “Well this certainly is bigger… Today I introduced at least seven crewmen to real tequila… and one to real alcohol. They’re going to be a good bunch. Still don’t have assistant chief.? He pulled out some of his civilian clothes and looked at them quizzically. He began folding them.

“I still haven’t met the captain… or commanding officer, lieutenant commander Clawson. I did meet lieutenant Anise Selmak, first officer, and ensign Clara Jaro, our head pilot. Apparently our CO and first officer were both brought up pilots, so we’ll see if they can keep themselves from grabbing the stick. Good luck up there Clara.? He smiled despite himself. “Clara and I explored the station, and the ship too, she’s nice. A German Bajoran, go figure. I hope I get a chance to see her off duty…? He took the pile of folded cloths to one of the dressers.

“The ship is…? *sigh* “The ship is beautiful. I’m not sure how I’m going to feel off duty. So far I’ve just wanted to work, but the Stations crew is still aboard. I haven’t been informed when our shifts will start, I’m still short staffed, but never mind that. The ship is perfect. She’s going to move like a fish, I’m going to slightly over drive the thrusters by inline patching the lateral impulse exhaust vents to activate in time with triggering with the thrusters fire. Just a little bit. I wouldn’t want to bump more the five, maybe ten percent thrust increase. These bio-neural gel packs make that possible. They’re fast enough to deal with that patch through and watch the math and the same time.?

Jamie looked down to realize he’d just fold the same uniform three times. “Yeah, I think I’m in love with Horizon, but maybe that’s just cause she’s mine.? He put the uniform away, walked over to the replicator and punched up some coffee.

“The marines are on deck nine. At least, that’s were they’re quarters are. I don’t know if their CO is up here with us Navy Senior officers, but that’s the bulk of them. I know this is the counter terrorist taskforce… well, we’ll see. I’ll get used to them I’m sure.? Jamie picked up a box inside the case and put it on the desk. He started to pull pictures out of it. And place them around the room.

“Oh well, hopefully tomorrow I’ll meet the CO. Computer, end log and save.?

Jamie looked around the room. It was still fairly Spartan, but nicer. He changed and hit the sack.

Clara straightened the final picture and stepped back, watching to make sure it was right. She sighed and relaxed, dropping herself onto the couch, which hugged beneath the windows of her quarters. She pulled at the collar of her uniform, before unzipping it and throwing the coat beside her on the couch.

“Computer, time?? She requested.

“The time is 23:56 hours.?

“Computer, begin recording personal log.? She leaned back. “Flight Control Officer’s Personal Log .? She sighed, suddenly feeling the weight of the day drop upon her. “Today was . . . interesting to say the least. I met the Chief Engineer, Lt. Dorval on Starbase 17 and we explored the station and the ship together. He seems a nice fellow, although a little eccentric when it comes to engineering.? Clara laughed. “Although I don’t think I’ve ever met an engineer who wasn’t at least a little eccentric.? Nor a helm officer either, she noted to herself. “I’m looking forward to working with him, if we ever get the chance, and if the rest of the crew is as amicable as he is, I think I’ll be able to slip in quite easily here.?

She stood, and went over to her replicator, while still talking, then manually punched in her order, rather than interrupt the log entry. After a moment a clear glass materialized and she picked it up.

“I also met the first officer, Lt. Selmak. She certainly keeps herself on business. Maybe a little more than is necessary, but it’s obviously gotten her this far. She used to be a pilot, before transferred to the Horizon and some of the maneuvers she talked about . . .? Clara shook her head. “Well, she knows what she’s doing. Definitely more than I do, although I’d never tell her that.? She sat down, again, and began to sip at her tea. “The CO’s a pilot, too, apparently. It’s a little intimidating, I guess.? She bit her lip, realizing that she was alone, and had no need to hold herself back in a personal log. Ok, I’m lying, it’s very intimidating.?

“I miss the Gallant, already.? She changed the subject. “I understand Tom-“ She corrected herself. “Captain Lightfoot’s point, I can’t stay in one post my entire career. And the Horizon is certainly a better opportunity for a pilot.? She shook her head. “Sometimes I wonder if I’m cut out for Starfleet. So many people here are so ambitious. Lt. Selmak is younger than I am, and already in command! Well,? she drank more of the quickly cooling tea. “I guess I’ll just do my best. At least I can fly. And I can’t wait to start back at that.? She stopped her rambling, and brought the topic back around to an account of her day.

“After dinner I held a department meeting. They seem to be a good group of pilots. There are only eight of us, so I’m sure we’ll become quite a tight group very quickly.? She smiled and finished off the glass. “I feel a little sorry for Lt. Dorval, with thirty-six people under his command, I’d hate to learn all those names!? She lay her glass upon the firm cushion next to her, and picked up the PADD which she had left lying there. Slowly she scrolled through the files of each pilot. “I have to choose an assistant soon. It’s a tough choice, considering that I’ve never met any of them before tonight.? She lay the PADD down, again. “I’m leaning towards Ensign Pal’Vek. He’s a Vulcan, and is the most experienced of the group. I’ll wait and judge their performances on this first mission.? She lifted the cup, and moved back towards the replicator. “Computer, end log. Save.? The computer beeped several times, and Clara watched the mug disintegrate back into the system.

Just giving everyone a little character development. :-) This will probably be my last post before leaving on saturday (Apr. 23) not to return until Aug. 1. I have an exam tomorrow and then (obviously) lots to do to prepare for leaving. If anyone wants to do a quick JP before I go, I'll try to be on mIRC when I'm not stressing and saying goodbye to ppl in rl. Have a good summer, everyone!

Apologies for the amount of time it took me to get this thing out to all of you. Real life kinda caught up with me, and whammo…. Oy. X_x then my PC died on me, so I’m doing everything from my lap top basically…

Aiy.. oh well.. here’s a post..

ON

<USS Horizon-A>
<COs Ready Room>

Jackie paced inside the read room, PADD in hand. The PADD Burton had given her, said pretty much the same thing, as the Admiral himself had said.

Jackie re-read the orders yet again, at the same time recalling the conversation with Burton.

StarFleet went vessel missing along with a Genesis Device. And Romulans were involved as well. She highly doubted they were interested in geological surveys.

‘peachy’ the feline thought, recalling her last few run ins with the Romlans. Those always left her hating the Romulans even more; she wasn’t sure what would be the case now. One thing for certain, her own safety and well being aside, Jackie had no incentive to lose any crew members this time around.

Jackie was so engrossed in her thoughts that she almost didn’t hear the chime ring.

“Mrr…enter? she murmured lightly, as she snapped out of her musings.

“Computer told me you were in here, Commander? Anise walked in smiling.

Jackie furrowed her brow, confused a little.

“Oh..?? she blinked, suddenly remembering where exactly she was at the moment. This wasn’t the Rayden and she wasn’t the Chief Security Officer/Wing Commander of the ship, she was the Commanding Officer of the USS Horizon.

“This is all so.. neat? Anise said, her voice sounding excited.

Jackie smiled a little.

“Quite, Lieutenant.? She noted.

“Have you been around the ship?? Anise asked.

Jackie nodded.

“Yes, I’ve shown Admiral Burton around earlier on.? She paused. “could hardly contain my own excitement.? She noted. .?didn’t want to appear like a little kitt in front of the Admiral. I can jump about this later? she noted. “What can I do for you, Lieutenant?? Jackie asked, trying not to look or sound like she really felt.

“You all right, Commander?? Anise asked, noting Jackie looking a little unsure.

“Yeah.. just, yet to get used to this… “ Jackie said. ‘and we’ve yet to start our first mission…get yourself together, Clawson’ Jackie told herself. “Our latest orders.? She said handing her XO the PADD she was holding.

Anise took the PADD as Jackie moved over to sit at her desk.

“Whoa?

Jackie raised an eyebrow, folding her paws together on her desk.

“Is that your expert opinion, XO?? Jackie asked, letting in a hint of a smile.

“Neutral Zone. Genesis Device. Missing Starship. Romulans? Anise listed the problem points “does that sound like a really bad mix?? she asked.

Jackie nodded.

“It’s our job to find the ship and get the device and destroy it. “ Jackie said “not to mention find out why the Romulans are so interested in that area. I highly doubt its geological surveys? Jackie’s voice was filled with cynicism.

Anise nodded.

“Agreed.? She noted.

Jackie shook her head a little, thinking about her options.

“I want us ready to depart as soon as all crew get aboard.?

Anise nodded.

“Understood? the Trill replied. “it should only take about two more hours.?

Jackie nodded.

“Excellent. Think I’m going to call a briefing in the meantime. No time like the present to meet the department heads? she noted.

Anise nodded.

“Raring to take this baby out, Commander??

“Aren’t you?? Jackie grinned.

“Quite. However I doubt I’d get to fly the Horizon that much. Ensign Jaro wouldn’t want me to move in on her territory? she noted.

Jackie smirked.

“I wouldn’t mind taking a knack at it myself sometime. However we both have to remember that both of us are in different positions now.? Jackie warned her XO.

‘easy for you to say’ Anise thought as she nodded her head. “Have you seen the helm?? she asked.

“Briefly. Helm wasn’t my station on the Rayden. Security/Tactical was? Jackie noted. However the she-kat wouldn’t mind being behind the controls of anything that was able to fly. “From what I’ve learned about the Horizon, Intrepid’s quite a potent starship? she lowered her head a little thinking about something.

“You must have more self control than I do, Commander? Anise noted.

“Hmm?? Jackie looked up, focusing on her XO.

Anise told her about how she met with the ships flight officer.

Jackie chuckled. She however knew that where she in Anise’s place, or if she walked up on the bridge on her own without Admiral Burton, she probably would do something similar to what Anise had done. Not that she didn’t do any screw ups in front of the Admiral.

“Hope I won’t see any fights on the bridge over who gets to take the helm? she noted. ‘

“No ma’am? Anise said. “If I gave into all the urges I’d have had, I probably would be trying to run my own ship and do every single duty aboard.? She noted.

Jackie nodded lightly.

“Yes…speaking of which, that’s what I should be doing. “ She said. “As soon as all the department heads are confirmed aboard, I’d like to hold a briefing before we depart? she said.

Anise nodded, listing the department heads already aboard.

“Chief Engineer, Flight Ops is aboard, Security/Tactical should be aboard soon. “ she noted.

“Good.? Jackie nodded. “See to it that everything’s okay.? She said.

“Aye sir…um…ma’am..sirma’amâ €¦â€?

Jackie smiled lightly as she waved a paw at Anise dismissing her.

OFF

Allrighty then.. briefing time…not quite sure how we’re gonna do the briefing, probably a series of smallish posts (however nothing one/two lined please ^) I might be able to do a JP or two if anyone wants to do a series of question/answers with me or something.

Check thread titled “Mission 1:? for more, I’m locking this one.
