M'karll
01-21-2008, 20:56
NAME: M'karll R'pas
NICKNAME(S): Karl, Pirate Kitty
CURRENT RANK: Ensign
CURRENT POSITION: Chief Pilot
CURRENT ASSIGNMENT: USS Horizon – A
GENDER: Male
SPECIES: Caitian
AGE: 24
PLACE OF BIRTH: Cait. Born in 2360

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
M'karll is a six foot tall two hundred and twenty pound Caitian that looks like nothing so much as a walking talking tiger. His build is a good deal stronger than that of the normal Caitian though he has not built his body so much that he has lost any of the natural Caitian grace. He never wears footwear unless he absolutely must. He always wears an eye patch over his right eye because he likes the look, unless he's ordered not to. When not on duty, he can usually be found somewhere around the ship dressed as a pirate and carrying a cutlass, which he is quite proficient with.

PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

M'karll is a very loud and vibrant person. He has very little concept of personal space. He believes he is a pirate of the ancient Terran variety and talks like it at all times, even when it's not appropriate to do so. Some have postulated that he may have forgotten how to talk normally. This is, in fact, untrue as Captain Picard never tolerated it, at least when the Caitian was on duty. Generally speaking, he talks like he's right out of a B-Rate Terran pirate movie. He spends his free time, generally, in the holodeck Captaining the pirate ship known as the 'Kitten's Revenge'. He also enjoys cooking, swordplay, weight training and exercising, and for some reason that no one has ever been able to figure out, he really enjoys playing baseball. He still feels very guilty about accidentally running Jackie Clawson through with a cutlass while on a mission, even though it wasn't really his fault. He does not discuss this with anyone, and he still carries the sword. He's a very good shot with a black powder pistol and during his last round of shoreleave he got himself qualified as a phaser marksman.

PERSONAL HISTORY:

Was born into a large family on Cait and grew up primarily on the southern-most continent of the planet, which is the only arctic environment to be found anywhere on Cait and one of the few habitable places on the planet where snow falls. All of his siblings have entered Starfleet in some form or another. Following his completion of basic schooling on Cait he was granted admission to Starfleet Academy, with a little bit of help from his two sisters and Uncle Grenn. The others were able to get in on merit, but M'karll's grades were never quite as good as the rest of his siblings' were.

Things didn't really start to get interesting for M'karll until his sophmore cadet cruise when he was able to land a summer cruise on the Enterprise-E which was just launching. In truth, the Caitian sort of lucked into the summer cruise on the Enterprise, a case of being in the right place at the right time since his actual summer assignment had been at Utopia Planitia. But, he had been deep in the sensor suite of the Enterprise working on calibrating and recalibrating virtually every sensor that the ship had. By the time he realized what had happened the Enterprise was already on station at the Romulan Neutral Zone.

After explaining the situation to Captain Picard, to a small chuckle from Commander Riker, the Caitian had been transferred to the Enterprise for his cadet summer assignment. It was easier than turning around and going all the way back to Earth. Immediately, given his intimate knowledge of the Enterprise's scanners and sensors he was put to work on the sensor sweeps of the Neutral Zone and was quite pleased with his discovery of "fifty-two ultra radiation spikes and a class two comet" at any rate he was much more impressed with his work than Captain Picard was. We was on the bridge at the rear auxiliary science station when Captain Picard violated orders and returned to Earth to fight the Borg. He defines Picard's ability to 'hear' the Borg as "A might touch unsettlin'".

During the battle against the Borg I'zzad was manning his auziliary science station on the bridge and continued to man it through the entirety of the battle taking no real active part in the actual fighting. Once the discovery was made that the Enterprise had travelled back in time to the 21st century he offered his skills in repairing the Phoenix. This was, naturally, rejected due to the foregone conclusion that no human had ever seen a Caitian. Initially, he was assigned to the repair teams that were working on repairs. Luckily for him, they were not the teams that were tasked with completing repairs that would require trips into the Jeffries Tubes. When the Borg finally made their presence known, M'karll was lucky enough to escape to the Bridge and monitor the situation from the main science station on the Bridge.

When it was decided to make an attempt to puncture one of the plasma coolant tanks M'karll was placed on the team along with a great many others from the security department. He was one of the lucky few to survive the attempt. For most of the remainder of the mission M'karll was assigned to Lieutenant McClure's security team, often engaging the Borg hand to hand, or hand to paw as the case may have been. Following the assimilation of Lieutenant Hawke, and the deaths of a great many of the Enterprise's crew, M'karll took over as the Enterprise's Chief Helmsman for the return trip to the 24th century and for the remainder of his summer cruise with the brevet rank of full Ensign. The cadet was also awarded a bronze star for his bravery during the conflict with the Borg.

The next summer, at Captain Picard's personal request, M'karll was again posted to the Enterprise for his summer cruise, again with the brevet rank of Ensign. Since he had, by this time, selected the helm and navigation sector for his major. As such, he was assigned to the second shift manning the helm station. During the reception for the Evora, in a celebration of them joining the Federation, M'karll was among those that was assigned to the serving staff. Later, the Caitian was manning the helm when the orders were given to divert course and head for the Briar Patch and the Baku homeworld.

Being so young, M'karll was never sent to the Baku planet on any of the away missions. He was not part of the initial away mission and never went on any of the subsequent away missions once the regenerative effects of the planet's rings were discovered. When the Enterprise left station to leave the Briar Patch and get a message out to the Federation Council M'karll was at the helm. Once the actual shooting started between the Enterprise and the Son'a began M'karll was regulated to an observer's post on the bridge due to his lack of experience. This angered the Caitian pilot quite a bit since he missed out on a shot at piloting immortality as the pilot at the controls for the execution of the Riker Maneuver.

From that point through the Enterprise's exiting of the Briar Patch M'karll was regulated back to his post on the Bridge that had been his home during his previous cruise on the Enterprise, namely the auxiliary science console. During the destruction of the metaphasic collector M'karll's scans were critical in pinpointing a hole in the shields of the collector. The Caitian relayed this information to transporter room four that was responsible for allowing Captain Picard to be beamed back to the Enterprise rather than being killed when the collector was destroyed. The rest of that cadet cruise passed relatively free of any major events and following the exit of the starship from the Briar Patch M'karll was allowed to resume his duties as the second shift helmsman.

Following his graduation from the Academy M'karll's first posting as an Ensign was to the Enterprise, at the personal request of Captain Picard who pulled a few strings to get the Caitian officer, as the ship's Chief Helmsman with the rank of Ensign. M'karll had the privilege of serving on the Enterprise when the ship was ordered to Romulus by Admiral Janeway. As such, M'karll has the distinct honor and privilege of going down in Caitian history as the first member of his people to visit the world of Romulus and serving on one of the only Starfleet vessels to ever be officially permitted by the Romulan Star Empire to enter their space.

The Caitian cadet was assigned the first shift helm duty assignment and, as such, he was not present for the wedding of William Riker and Deanna Troi as he was on duty on the Bridge at the time as not only the helmsman but also the watch officer since most of the rest of the crew were present for the wedding. That, and he specifically asked Captain Picard to be allowed a little bridge time while most of the crew was at the wedding. Given that there was no danger at the time, given the Enterprise's location in Federation space Captain Picard allowed the Caitian to serve as the watch officer for the duration of the wedding and reception. In truth, M'karll just wanted to be able to truthfully claim that he had once served as the commanding officer of the Enterprise which is, technically, true since everyone was off the ship and planetside for the wedding and reception. He has since insisted that it appear on his record that he once commanded the Enterprise, Commander Riker found this so amusing that he had it placed in the extra notation of M'karll's personal file.

While on the mission into Romulan space M'karll was largely bored until the shooting started. Unfortunately, as the Enterprise was making to exit Romulan space following the attack by Praetor Shinzon M'karll became stuck in a turbolift as a result of a temporary power loss when energy was rerouted to try and keep the shields up. After a lengthy crawl through the Jeffries Tubes the helmsman succeeded in getting onto the bridge just in time to take part in what he considers to be the most enjoyable order of his whole career, plotting the course for the Enterprise to ram Shinzon's own Scimitar and engaging it from the auxiliary helm station at the rear of the bridge as the main helm station, where Commander Troi was seated, lost power just a split second before she could execute Captain Picard's orders. An official investigation of the ship's internal sensor logs would later prove that it was indeed the Caitian ensign and not the Counselor that was the pilot of the Enterprise when the ship collided with the Reman vessel and resulted in the subsequent awarding of the Distinguished Flying Cross to the Ensign.

When the two vessels collided M'karll was hurled into, and then over, the tactical station on the bridge. This resulted in the pilot sustaining a separated left shoulder, though his injuries were not deemed serious enough to warrant the awarding of a Purple Heart. When the Enterprise was towed back to Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards for repairs M'karll was placed back into the active officer pool since he wasn't officially senior staff on the fleet flagship.

M'karll didn't have too long to sit in the officer pool though. Seeing that the helmsman was available, Captain Riker plucked M'karll from the Enterprise to serve on the Titan as the Chief Helmsman for the Titan's first few missions in Romulan space since he had familiarity with the Caitian pilot and rightly assumed that M'karll was the most well versed on Romulan starship combat tactics and capabilities, at least from the perspective of a helmsman. However, in a move that is somewhat typical of his family when it comes to career moves, when the oppertunity came along for a transfer to the Horizon where his cousin J'al was serving M'karll went ahead and took it even though it represented something of a demotion for him since he would only be serving as the Chief Shuttle Pilot and second shift helmsman on the Horizon.

In his first mission on the Horizon the pilot managed to rename all of the Horizon's shuttlecraft after ancient Terran pirate vessels and run his own commanding officer through with a cutlass. The stabbing of Admiral Clawson was not entirely his fault, M'karll still blames himself for it and feels very guilty about the whole thing. In his second mission on the Horizon M'karll and a few other members of the crew were sent under cover to infiltrate a pirate clan. Following that mission the pilot took a bit of the shore leave that he had saved up and returned to Earth to get a few more qualifications that seem very odd when one considers the fact that the Caitian is a helmsman and not a solider.

Baseball - Discovered at the Academy and was a very good pitcher for the Academy when the sport started making a comeback in the late 24th century.

Swordplay - M'karll thoroughly enjoys playing with ancient Terran objects that are sharp and pointy. Well, ok, only a cutlass really.

CHARACTER QUIRKS:
Always talks like a pirate.
Does not wear footwear.
Always has a cutlass on him.

Personal Notes:

From Captain William T. Riker

Be it hereby known that, for a grand total of four hours thirty-seven minutes and forty-two seconds Ensign M'karll R'pas served as the commanding officer of the USS Enterprise, registry number NCC-1701-E. He commanded the ship while the rest of the senior staff, and most of the officers for that matter, were attending the wedding of myself and Commander Deanna Troi and following reception. Upon the return of the senior staff to the ship the Ensign again resumed his normal place in the chain of command. It should now be noted that, Ensign M'karll R'pas at twenty-two years, zero months, one day, and two hours is 'unofficially' the youngest commanding officer to ever serve in Starfleet.
