OOC Stuff:
Unlike certain BravoFleet simms and forums, we over here on the Horizon, respect our members' privacy and don't read any private messages exchanged between players on this simm (unless they are forwarded to us). Enjoy your privacy :)
1: Posting Requirements:
We encourage all the players of this simm to post at least once a week regardless of rank/rate or position. In short, the USS Horizon expects ALL players to make an attempt to post once every two weeks. It doesn't need to be long or spectacular. It should, if possible, be about your character in the current storyline/plot. If that is not possible then you should post a personal log. More content in a post is always preferable, but not required! However, do remember that one post of quality can be worth more then 6 short posts that never really developed into anything. One line posts are not a good idea, so please refrain from doing those.
Be aware that how you post will directly affect your promotions possibilities, both by rank/rate, and position should you wish to apply for a different and higher role. With higher ranking positions comes greater responsibility. All senior staff should post more frequently than the required minimum to ensure that the storyline is kept going.
If you are lost at what to post, don't despair! Joint posts are a good way to help you out of a mental jam and develop your character/a relationship (not necessarily the romantic kind of relationship) with another character on the simm. Joint posts between the crew are highly encouraged on the Horizon and we have a separate area for crew to compile their posts in before posting them to the main simm thread.
All tags go at the bottom of your post after OFF. Everything in between shouldn’t hold a “tag: crewmember name” in between anywhere in the post, if you really do need someone’s response in the middle, either leave the post at that or tag the person for a Joint Post in the JP forum or over IM. (Joint posts are posts done between two or more players playing their characters and interacting that way.) In short: NO IN-POST TAGS
A word about Joint Posts and the joint posts area. The posts made there, do not count towards your post count on the simm unless the finished Joint Post has been posted to the main thread in the Current Mission forum. Please don't be afraid to read JPs in progress, in fact, it is encouraged you do so, so as not to mess up something by posting in the current mission area that goes against what the people are JPing about.
If you fail to post within a reasonable amount of time, you will be placed on warning or removed from the simm. If you however post more than the required amount of posts a week and contribute healthily to the plot, then you shall be rewarded in ways which may include a promotion or an award of some sorts from BravoFleet.
Important: It happens, we all go away, take time off or have issues that get in the way of playing. I understand this, but if you can't post for a while please inform your commanding officer by posting a thread about it in the LOAs area or sending a Private Message/Instant Message me or the XO. In short, LET US KNOW you’re not going to be active so we won’t tag you during your away time, otherwise it may be considered as slacking off on your side and we won’t be able to promote you as quickly as you hope.
2: Starting a New Missions:
Usually the missions are started by the Commanding Officer. So I'll be the one who'll start a new thread in the "Mission Posts" forum. However, if you have an idea for a mission, write an overview of the mission objectives, possible story lines, and send it to any of the GMs or drop a private message my way. If we can work it in, we will use it and give you the creative credit and extra points which will go towards your promotion/standing in this simm.
It is very nice to receive fresh ideas from the crew. I encourage all the crew to pitch in with mission ideas, this is one of the hardest parts for the RPG, and new fresh ideas are very useful. But remember that all new mission ideas MUST go through the commanding officer before they're set into life. There is a high possibility an idea will be accepted rather than reject it.
3: Posting and the Mission:
Some missions have a clear aim, some do not. And by that I mean we aim to achieve something important for future use in the simm. (Be it character development or storyline development or other kind of development) When a mission starts that is set to create something for future use by the simm you will be told about this at the beginning of the mission. Otherwise it’s an open field and the following information is very important, so please read it fully!
You, as a player should be creative. You are free to develop your own character however you see fit; I have no control over your character development-wise! I do however have control if you are doing something that directly violates the rules and/or messes up the mission plot-wise. However I shouldn’t have to resort to playing your character, it’s your character, s/he should be played by you and you alone.
That said: Please do not post as another person's character unless you have their permission to do so. That includes manipulating another person's character even for 'minor' scenes and movements and dialogue. Some people don't like it when another player uses their character without asking first.
Don’t wait for the commanding officer to spoon feed you details of the mission. That’ll never happen. Senior staff and I create a mission and think up ideas that will move it along, but I will only use them if I have to. Missions become extremely dull for the CO if I know all the details. I like a little spontaneity on my own simm as well ;) If I know all the details, I may as well go ahead and write a fan fiction about it instead of simming. We need to enjoy the mission as well. Consider always reading a book and knowing the ending? It gets very boring after a time.
Keep in line with the current plot, and try to keep up with where the other characters on the ship are. Not doing so will inevitably cause a story split.
Sub-plots affecting the entire ship must be approved by the Command Staff. Please make sure the Command Staff is aware of it and has given its approval for the sub-plots. Remember the gamemasters still have the main plot to run, and we will make sure to involve most of the crew. You are free to suggest plots and sub-plots to the CO/XO and if you get your plot approved by the Senior Staff story splits are less likely to occur as we will try to integrate them into things at some stage where they are plausible. This isn’t done to restrict you, but rather to help us run a better game. You’re welcome to get together with other crew members (or the CO and XO) to run your own sub-plots affecting your characters. That is encouraged rather heavily.
Cursing, within reason, is okay. No overly sexual posts. Remember, we do have a few young players and others that will get offended. Kisses, hugs, and the like are fine, but sex and the details are not. Let's keep things in good taste. If you are not sure whether some part of your post is okay or not, send it to me or the XO and we’ll let you know.
This is taking place in the Star Trek universe!!! Triple-sized Nebula-Class starships do not suddenly appear and release fighters in the middle of a battle! I know this is a work of fiction, but even in fiction you have to be realistic to some extent! There are no Light Sabers, Neechians, Force Lances, or The Force.
We do have players and characters influenced by other sci-fi shows, that's fine, provided their backstory is believable in a Trek setting. So it's okay to have a character based on Jack O'Neil (including his looks and charming wit) but it's NOT ok to have him run around with a zat and a P90 and talk about jumping through the 'gate! (unless the mission is a crossover mission)
Sooo, post accordingly. Creativity's fine...just don't be ridiculous. Overall, HAVE FUN! I won’t stifle your creativity if you let me know in advance and I can work it into the storyline. Rest assured, every player aboard the Horizon will not be twiddling thumbs out of boredom because they’re not in on all the action. We’d like to focus on character development more than the typical “shoot ‘em up” space battles although those will also be around. Bottom line: if you’re lost: ask for directions/assistance!
4: Promotions and Commendations:
At the end of each mission the CO and XO assesses the crew and promotes and awards commendations if needed.
Promotions and Commendations:
A few factors affect if you will be promoted or not. Your posting frequency, the quality of posts, your enthusiasm to this simulation, and extra activities you may be undertaking on behalf of this simm, all contribute towards a promotion. In a nut shell, something that makes you *stand* out to me and the command staff. Show the Command Staff why you deserve the promotion/commendation!
Be aware however, we do make the players work for their promotions. We make sure every player has really achieved that rank or rate that they deserve, and they can be sure they have earned it when we promote them. Just remember that the higher you go, the harder it is to achieve the next step up.
